Getting new keys with the Toyota logo

Good morning all!
I bought a 2000 tundra yesterday and the truck came with only one key! The key is one that may have been made at a Home Depot or something like that. I would like to order a new set and have them cut locally. Can anyone tell me which blank to buy. Amazon has blank keys with the Toyota logo on them just don’t want to buy the wrong blanks

 

Does the place you're going to have the key cut at stock blanks? Every spare key I've had cut, the blank was bought at the locksmith, including the ones for my truck.

 

I’m sure they do but I’m interested in a key that has the Toyota logo in them.

I would go to a Toyota dealership with your VIN# and you will get the correct answer.

 

Gotcha. I'm no help on that, hopefully someone that's bought a logo'd blank can chime in. Or as Jim said, maybe a dealership might stock them.

I had a Honda and went to the Honda dealer for a OEM new key, they sold me, and cut the blank key for about $8.00 dollars, albeit about ten years ago. Maybe a Toyota dealer will do the same and be such a good deal like I got.

 

As others have said, go to the dealer with vin number and ask them for OEM style keys. Not more than $15 if I remember correctly. You can also have this done even if you have lost all your keys. Just have to provide proof of ownership.
I had to do what you are doing when I got my truck as well.

 

And as I don't see anyone mention here, NEVER EVER EVER buy non-OEM key blanks from fleaBay, scAmazon, or others. I learned this the hard way back in my heavier VW days. I tried saving some money buying cheapo chinesium blanks on fleaBay, for my '99 GTI at the time which used a sidewinder-style key, which requires a special cutter.

Got them in, took them to the dealership to have them cut at the parts counter, I was told they would. Apparently the blank was so hard it toasted their machine about halfway through cutting (one side?) and the kid operating it got chewed out, his manager kicked me out and was hollering about the same, never buy non-OEM. My local Ace hardware won't even cut key blanks unless it's something they stock.

Felt bad about it until the same dealership screwed me a couple years later on a lease return for a later-model Jetta. Went to another dealership, bought a keyblank from them for as much as I paid for all three blanks on fleaBay, and threw the two extra uncut chinesium blanks in the scrap metal pile.

Lesson learned. Always buy OEM, at the dealership, and have them cut it if you must have branded keys.

 

I would also call your dealership before going.
I went about a year or two ago to get a new key for my T4R and luckily I called because they told me I had to bring in registration showing ownership along with ID that matched. I tried calling a few others and no one would do it without that.

 

That is correct. No dealership will look up a key code without being present with the proper proof of ownership. Too much liability.

 

Is this true if you already have a non-OEM key and are looking to get a new OEM-branded key cut? Or only if you have zero keys, and you need them to cut one based on your VIN?

 

@shifty` my impression was either. I had the keys, but they verified by VIN on the title showing the ownership.

 

Only if they are looking up the key code in Toyota's system.

 

The dealer cuts the new key based on the VIN, not your old key. I got a new, OEM Toyota key from a dealer and that's how they did it. I recommend it. It's really nice to have factory keys.

 

I just got mine, I wanted to stay away from the plain brass keys my 06' came with.
eBay, paid $10 for the unchipped key and ace hardware were able to cut it for me.

 

Just had this done a Salinas Toyota, it was pricey but nice and the keys work like butter, 20-22 each!

decided to only get two, and use my old OEM as the spare

 

I gotta get this done. Take the title to the dealer as proof of ownership?
