i am currently shopping for my first Tundra and trying to decide if it's worth saving a little money and going with the 4.6 engine or spend a little more and get the 5.7.

20 people are going to tell you to get the 5.7.
2 people will tell you the 4.6 is good enough.

5.7 all the way! The gas mileage difference is so minuscule in real-world applications.

I bought my Tundra 2015 DC 4.6L used (certified) and it was a deal I could not pass on . It hit budget , miles, year, colour etc. For me .I love the engine and it fits what I tow ( 5'x8') ATV trailer with a Can AM 800XT Max on it . I can get 17 MPG city and 18 hwy ( heading south toward NOLA/ Gulf Coast not towing ) . If budget keeps you with the 4.6 and your tow/haul needs work with it , you will be fine . If you have the $ you will not regret the 5.7L.

All of us 5.7 guys will say 5.7 hands down, though I haven't driven one with the 4.6 to really compare. I think what @Scpringle said is solid advice. Comes down to your needs, budget, and as always, the deal. A friend of mine has the 4.6 and he feels it is more than adequate for his needs, zero regrets.

just from the responses above alone - what you save today will be wiped out by the lower residual value when you sell it if you go 4.6. because in 3/5/7 years when your prospective buyer is hitting up the forum to ask our opinion, we're all going to tell them the same thing... unless it's a smoking deal, get the 5.7.

My first tundra was a 2013 with the 4.6. I really wanted the 5.7 but settled for the 4.6. Now don't me me wrong here the 4.6 is a good engine. It will do just about anything you want, but just was not satisfied. My last 2 tundras have had the 5.7, ahhhhh yes much better. More power, simple as that. Passes better when I need to, if I need to scoot out of the way quick it does, its capable of doing more work if I need it to.
Its all about what you want, and the mileage is the same with the 5.7 and it was with the 4.6 that I had.

    96 Tacoma- 4cyl - lasted forever
    12 Tundra - 4.6 - loved it
    16 Tacoma -3.5 -never again
17 Tundra -5.7 - ABSOLUTELY love it and can never go back again.

5.7 should be your move unless the 4.6 shows a pretty price tag, buy you can get a 5.7 for not much more

Both are GREAT engines and honestly the 4.6 is plenty for 99% of what most of use use the truck for. However, getting the 5.7 also gets you a heavier duty alternator, extra transmission cooler, larger ring gear and the option for a larger fuel tank. I went through the same internal debate when I bought mine and in the end Im glad I got the 5.7. Ive only needed the 5.7's extra power a couple of times since I bought it a year ago, but Im glad I had the capability when it was needed. Nothing would be more frustrating than owning a massive (for a half ton) truck that didn't have the nuts to do something that you needed.
If you can swing the extra $ at purchase, it makes up for itself in resale as well as owner satisfaction.

I have a 4.6 with 222 thousand miles on it and no problems towing either. My next truck will be a 5.7 Tundra Pro. Why ? Why not ?

If your Tundra is a 2007, it cannot be a 4.6L, it must be the 4.7L.

    I am 95% sure...

You are correct. It was 4.7 for 2007, 2008, and 2009. Toyota replaced 4.7 with 4.6 in 2010.

Wasn't the million mile Tundra a 4.7? Both are good engines, but I also vote for 5.7.
