Long time user of ProClip mounts, but this is the first vehicle I've had where it has to mount on the dash trim above the vent.

    I'm using this mount.

Tried to install it yesterday. Failed.

Super easy to slip the bottom part of the mount into the seam between the dash and the trim.

But when I went to attach the plate to the base, it doesn't lay flat on the base so I can't screw it into the screw pad on the base. It's at least a 30-40 degree angle away from being able to lay flat against it. I can't move the base up because it's shapped to fit the contour of the dash. I can't move the plate up or down because the screw holes have to align with that screw mount/pad in the center.

I can't tell if I'm an idiot doing something wrong or I have a defect part.

I tried all kinds of positions along the dash/trim, but unless it's right where it shows in this photo, then the bottom of the plate ends up covering part of the vent and that's obviously not right either.

So what's the verdict -- idiot or defective?

If the parts look like the image then I can't spot any defects. I have the ProClip installed in the same location (unlike other vehicles they don't offer multiple mounting locations) but I'm not entirely following the issue you are having. Are the pieces trying to form an inverted "V" instead of parallel "II"?

In order to get the two pieces to go parallel I think I had to push the base back towards the windshield to get them to line up. You can try moving the base to the left or to the right (don't remove it just slide it) to see if you can get it to yield so more. You can also try screwing in one side but out of alignment then rotate the piece in to position. I remember it being a tight fit but otherwise a straight forward installation.

Can you post pics of where you’re installing and how it looks with the back plate positioning? Like Salty said, it’s a tight fit but nothing crazy. If you’re over the vent, you probably need to slide to the left a bit.

First video shows exactly your problem. Just push it toward windshield to get it to line up and mate together to tighten the fasteners.

I agree with what everyone else has said.

It's a super simple install, well it was for me anyway.

Push back on the plate inserted in the dash, then tighten the outer plate and it will pull tight and almost parallel.

Love this mount, best cell phone mount I have ever used in any vehicle ever.

Hope it works out for you!

Thanks folks. I was doing it right but thought the angle/gap would be too great to be able to screw it together so they’re flush. Didn’t push it because you can’t return as soon as you start to screw it together.

Tried it again and it fits just fine when it’s screwed together. Thanks all for the help.

Next up, I just need to find a way to install USB-C power behind the dash and hardwire it so I can drill a hole and hide the unsightly power cord.

    Good job!

Now get rid of the white cord

Mine is black, and comes out the top back of the Scoshe magicmount charge base I use.
I bent the wire to contour with the silver dash so mine lays against there really well.
It has not really stretched out but I was debating eventually taping it down to those contours, but tbh it has never been in my way dangling there so I don't care at this point.
I would not want to drill into, or damage my dash ever, if so I could have gone with a much different phone mount.

Also your USB ports are huge!
I used much smaller dual port high power units from Amazon I linked in another thread I think.
This way my wire tucks in better there at the bottom and I have more useable shelf space there.

I wish mine was black. I hate the white. Unfortunately, the only chargers capable of iPhone 12/13 max charging rate of 15W is this one from Apple, and they don’t make any other color. I thought about painting it but I don’t think I’ll bother.

I definitely will hide the cord though. I don’t mind drilling a hole in the silver plastic behind the charger. I can always replace the plastic trim piece if I wanted it to go back to factory.

option 2 is to cut a small groove on the left side of the silver trim to feed the wire behind the dash. Would prefer this over a hole in the middle of the trim I think.

this is what I did in my 4Runner. Proclip mount was off to the side in there no on the vent, so I just needed a groove to fit the cord. That mount was hardwired; tapped into my constant power 12v/cig lighter. Would’ve done the same here but the hardwired promoint costs much more and I won’t spend that until Apple replaces their lightning power with USB-C. It’s coming. They did on the new iPads. Hopefully iPhone will follow suit. I want the power standard so I don’t have to replace the mount again unless the size of the phone changes significantly.

made a small half circle cut of the backside of the trim where it meets the dash. just enough to let the cord fit through; wrapped it in electrical tape just as a precaution against rubbing against a cut edge of plastic, though it was never an issue. It didn’t even move around.

I’ll put a power source to plug the white cord into somewhere behind the dash and run it into a constant power source fuse slot.

just need to figure out what to use for the power source and how to do the fuse part.

Thats true making a small hole in the trim piece is not as big of a deal.

I do like the configuration of your charger, with the bottom feet to rest the phone on, mine just free hangs lol.

This model is not mine but it claims to give the same power as yours, and there may be other models that also do but many showed only 10watts. (which I think mine is using on my Samsung Note8)

I just don't care enough to hard wire my cell phone charger, I also don't drive that much working from home these days.

Some android phones can charge at 15W using chargers that support it. But Apple devices won’t charge at 15W unless it’s Apple’s own charger. They’ll degrade to 7.5W-10W on all the others.
