Rear diff locker: Do they make an E Locker for Tundras?

Zidaro, why did you choose the auburn over a locker in the rear? If you didn't have a front locker, would you still get the auburn in the rear over the locker?

Living with snow covered roads 5 months a year, i wanted to see an improvement in traction all the time. Not just when you engage the ARB. And i didn't want the rear locked. I have a detroit in the rear of my crawler, know how to drive it in the snow, but it is always breaking the rear free. ya get very good at power sliding Not what i wanted in my Tundra on the highways all Winter.
A Locker ARB/Detroit will give you max traction to navigate over obstacles, both wheels turn at the same speed at all times. ARB gives you the choice to turn it off. The LSD gives you traction advantage over stock all the time, but you are not locked and tires to not have 100% momentum, you can spin one tire when the other is static to some degree. Not locked, not 100%.
Its a trade off, and a choice we get to make.
In my Tundra, that i drive on the Highway and around town a decent amount of time, i wanted a very useable aid in traction for the rear, full time. If this was a trail/camping rig only, i might opt for the locker in the rear. But i wanted it to handle better on snowy/icy roads- period. The locker won't do that. But, a front locker sure does help when i get stuck or it gets serious out on a snowy trail and i need more than 3 tires spinning. So does airing WAY down btw.

We are moving up to Alaska. Should be all moved up there by first of August. One of the reasons for me building this truck. My old Taco would not be enough truck for moving up there. This re-gear and the LSD will be perfect. Pretty sure that we are going to be in snow about 7 months out of the year. If I find that I need to add a front ARB I can do it up there.

 

Nitro 4:88's front and rear and Auburn LSD showed up.

 

My 4.88 and Auburn LSD diff are getting installed this week. Will have to compare our results after install.

 

Im going to call around and see where for sure I am going to go get mine done.

I am afraid that 4WP might be upset that I didn't buy from them from them and won't want to do the install. They tend to make things more difficult sometimes than necessary from my experience. Ive only bought a few things from them over the counter and when I needed something right away. They could really probably care less with how busy they are.

I will call a Toyota dealer that I know of and see if they are interested.

There is a place here called bring your own parts. They install anything you bring to them. I don't know how good they are though.

 

Give Tandem Automotive a call. They specialize in Toyotas. I'm not sure where you are located in DFW but that are SE Fort Worth at 820 and 287

 

4WP said hell no today. They will not install the Nitro's. I knew that they were going to be horse crap about it. Been very busy today and will call around tomorrow.

 

Sorry to hear that. I know 4wheel parts being such a large national company has a lot of protocols to follow. They don't like to install parts from other places usually due to liability reasons. I hope it works out.

 

Got it covered. Have a custom shop 1/2 mile from my shop that will do it for 1000.00 and 2 days. No problem.

 

My gears and LSD are going in next Thursday/Friday. Turns out to be $1,200.00 on Labor. These guys are pretty sharp and do a lot of different stuff. Never knew that they were here in town. Got to see some VERY nice stuff at their shop today. My Tundra looked pretty tame parked out front there.

Oh wow, did not know that. They are a very busy place for sure and Im glad that they are getting me in. TONS of very nice stuff in their shop and every employee car parked around that place is incredible.

 

Yup they have a lot of lifted trucks from last years sema for sale online. I'm pretty sure their custom grilles are made by the same guy who made mine. Keep me posted on your install experience. I get my truck back Monday with 4.88s and LSD!

So, how did the installs go,, was the result what you were looking for?

 

My install went well and I'm very happy with my 4.88s and Auburn LSD! It's nice having both rear tires hook up at the same time when I get on it or the tires feel loose traction.

 

If one wanted to just keep stock tires and wheels, would you need to change the gear ratio, or would stock work with the Auburn?

 

Yes you can keep the stock gears, wheels and tires and install an auburn LSD.

 

Just an update from Alaska.

Rear wheels have not broke traction one time nor has one wheel spun without the other.

Pretty much been in 4X4 mode since last November.

(I did do one smallish donut on a wide open snow covered parking lot just for fun and all 4 broke lose pretty nicely.)

We have mostly gravel roads. Nice to do mini and easy "Dukes of Hazards" every where you want to and when. Dose not take much to get them both spinning.

Didn't mean to sound mean. I had posted more detail in another thread with a ton of pics and thought it was on this thread.


Rear leaf, LSD, 4:88's, and my lift mods turned out to be MUST HAVE up here for me. Truck is performing perfectly as it should (not as it did stock and wimpy as it was) in regard to towing, hauling, tongue weight, ride, ect.

The LSD never missed a beat on snow. I was in 4X4 High for a solid 4 to 5 months full time and the truck never broke traction. Even in 2X4 both rear wheels hook up 100% of the time with very little effort to spin them both if I wanted to.

Took it out on a big parking lot and let her rip in 4X4 and 2X4 to break it loose to see what it would do and to test out the LSD and it all worked like a charm. Pretty fun but Im not into bashing my gear so no more of that.

Truck is performing flawlessly and acting like it was engineered this way (that should have been) on purpose from Toyota.

Everything that I did enhanced everything that needed a little extra punch. Can not say one bad thing about any of it. The truck is truly a bad ass now in all driving modes and conditions.

Nitro Terra Grapples have been KILLER as well. They handle everything and show very little signs of wear with right at 10k miles on them.

I can't say enough on how happy I am with everything.
