2004 use '00-03 or '05-06 Service Manual?

I can find PDF's of the 2000-2003 and 2005-2006 factory service manuals. Is there a particular factory service manual for 2004 double cabs or should I use one of these two?

I'm not sure if I've ever seen a 2004 specific manual, but your engine is non-vvti, yes?

If so, and if all else fails, I would opt for the earlier manual as there is more in common with your truck with those year models than later.

Well also the FSM is supposed to be more "in-depth?"

 

You can get the Haynes manual at the public library or a one day subscription to TIS and spend your day drinking and downloading each few pages of the manual. You can then print it all out or find an app to join it all together.

 

I bought a Haynes for the corolla thinking it would be similar to the FSM. It wasn't in depth like the FSM is. Didn't list torque specs, didn't give trouble shooting advice. A waste of 30 doll hairs.

 

I got Haynes and Chiltons manuals I picked up for under $5, used, on scAmazon. Like @Tundra2 mentions, they're a good baseline, but FSM has more precise details. Sometimes Haynes or Chiltons will have interesting unofficial tricks to work through things which you won't see in the FSM.

If it were me, knowing the 4.7 went VVTi in '05+, I'd probably aim for the '03 FSM instead of Haynes or Chilton.

 

When the manuals go for $400/set and the first affordable manual is the Haynes when buying the truck new, you generally pick that up. I don't think the TIS thing came out till at least 10 years later.

 

The Haynes is worth the investment.

To answer your question, I would lean on the early years version since your motor/trans and everything else is indetical to an 03 or very close. If you need electrical schematics for body items (lights and interior stuff, not mechanical stuff) maybe the 05 book would come in handy since the DC was not available in 03.

Edit- there is one gray area where the 05 book may matter mechanically. The master cylinder and brake booster may be different on an 04. I'm not 100% sure but it may. Everything else should match an 03 mechanically.

I have found a copy of 2003 FSM mirrors the 04 pretty well and up until I downloaded the 04, it was my go to.

 

Be glad to provide you all the pdf's saved in their respective directories from TIS on a flash drive if interested. If anyone knows how to combine, Please let me know.

Adobe Acrobat Pro will do that for you. I have it at work though, not home. I think there’s websites that will combine the pages, but I don’t think it can handle that output and you really don’t want to be doing that with copyright material.

From a quick check online, there are several free Linux tools that will do that as well. PDF chain, PDF Arranger, PDF jumbled and PDF mix tool.

None that I’ve played around with though.

Yeah, I've used it before for other things and have that as my go to when I decide to devote the time with their 7 day free trial. Been reading up on how to do it but want to be sure once I get started. There's a way to do table of contents and will take a bit for this ole brain to totally grasp how. Unless I can get some whooper snapper to offer !

Yeah, for the most part it is and the additions for DC are the RSES/RSAS(Rear Seat Audio System/Rear Seat Entertainment System), Power Windows and few other things.

I can't answer on the FSM. But for sure the EWD linked earlier is legit.

 

The EWD is pretty different body side for a DC.

yea. The DC stuff in the ewd is seperate: the main manual stuff is all mixed in. Tis is terrible to navigate these older ones sometimes

you need a (typically) paid PDF editing software. I have one I use through work (Bluebeam).
the other part about combining them is that you'll likely end up larger in file size than the max single-file upload size here. That's why many of the later EWD's I assembled I had to actually split up to be able to post here.

 

I have an 04, and am equally frustrated by not being able to find a FSM. Mechanically, most everything is the same as an 03. However some systems I've found are like the 05 (Evap system, for example). I also have the Haynes manual. While it tends to be more generic, it does offer some better "how to" information. Their BW pictures are useless for the most part (poor resolution) , and often just plain wrong. YouTube is often helpful. Tundras.com is the best resource!

As a non-professional (I once was...but a LONG TIME ago) DIY mechanic, I'll spend as much time researching/preparing for a project as it takes to perform the work...sometimes longer. Identifying Toyota PNs is often challenging! I just replaced the center pipe/resonator, and I decided to buy OEM (stainless steel) vs aftermarket (chinesium, as we say) at 2.5X the cost. There's an unusual Toyota style clamp (Toyota 9008046263) that I identified along with the other components. But when it all arrived I discovered that the clamp required a bolt that WAS NOT INCLUDED (this is a very annoying Toyotaism...required parts are ordered separately. Shame on me for not checking). No problem, I'll just head to Ace is the place and get one. But nooo...it was some weird ass size (M7 x 1.25) not to be found. So I ordered it at the dealer $1.76.

Back on track, my exhaust system is the same for 2002-2004. The evap system is the only thing (so far) that comes up 2004-2006.

Correct, the 03 and 05 pdf's I have are approx 45 and 80 MB in size respectively. They contain the Repair Manual and EWD which is why they have to be found on a Google file share or similar. The combined size of 1461 files for an 04 FSM is 80MB.
