So it would appear that I will need to seek warranty work for what appears to be The Cam Tower Leak on my '11 5.7L. My closest dealer is in Glenwood Springs, but would like to be a little more certain that the tech that gets this job knows what they're doing as the engine gets torn down quite a bit, the cams come out and the timing can be pretty tricky to set up. I'd be interested in hearing what dealer in the Front Range you all might feel confident in recommending were you to have this level of engine teardown done. Thanks for your time gang.

Warranty work most dealers only let the master techs or has be certified to do the warranty work.

As for timing if the engine is not dead on it will not start.

Relax my freind let the dealer handle it. You will thank me later my friend.

Fyi. Dont be shocked if the tech finds more wrong as they dig in.. when they do rest at ease the tech is doing the job correctly.

Jace at Stevenson west is an active member of tacoma world and became a friend of Sean @Sean266 and I through TW. He knows his stuff and works on everyone's tacomas and Sean's tundra that I know of. I will be taking mine to him when I need it. I believe he is the master tech your looking for.

    This makes sense, logical.

It was mentioned by some other owners that after they had the same repair work done, that their trucks ran fine until they got out on the highway requesting power and revs. Returning to their respective dealers, they reported that they were told the cam timing was not set correctly and had to be redone. It was reported that it was tricky and required care. I only mentioned it, because others have as well.

It's difficult to let someone work on your vehicle when you've always done your own, as I'm sure many of us who frequent these forums have to learn. This is my first vehicle with A/C, and all the technology is getting beyond my abilities. lol

I can't recall of anyone who's shared their experience having other things found wrong, anything that you've heard?

I have had one person mention Stevenson West, so that's confidence inspiring.

I kind of want to get the process rolling on this. I guess what I'll do is have the leak "inspected" for verification of point of origin, then go with the dealer that can get it in their shop in a timely fashion and that meshes with my schedule.

I'm still interested in hearing from anyone else that is inclined to chime in. I'm sure it'll be a few weeks before I hand over the key.

    Again, thanks guys.

Problem is the engine should have cel.

The techs fault for not lab scoping the engine to confirm it before handing it off. would have showed a advance in timing and retard on other banks... im shocked the ecm lets it go out that far. Bad design toyota. Bad design.

I think that it's the timing for the Variable Valve Timing. The ECU might not see anything incorrect until the different cam profile is present when the driver is heavy into the throttle and the engine is in the upper rev range where those profiles are used. I would think that there's a way to check this, possibly with Techstream. I want to say that I've even noticed the test in my copy of the software. Maybe the reported cases, the tech was confident that they set it right and blew it off, the kind of scenario I'd prefer to avoid.

I've been going to Stevenson's East only for small tweaks (they're close), but if I need something more serious done I'll take Sean's advice and go across town to Stevenson's West and deal with Jace.

Let Jace know you're a friend of Sean Anderson....not that he would steer a random person wrong, but like I said - if he doesnt do warranty work he will make sure he gets you to the proper person.

To be honest all three have to synchronize. spark, timing and vvti. If the timing is off so will spark. That will show up in the lab scope as one bank is more advanced then the other.

Funny part is the ecm caught the timing off or it would be stumbling badly. Or the crap tech let the ecm just learn it that way.

Anytime I did any timing work lab scope was my best friend. Same goes when my 2u gets rebuild lab scope is right there on start up im looking for trouble.

I seem to recall that was one of the descriptions given by someone. They crawled out of the dealer parking lot, tried to pull out into traffic and the truck fell on it's face. I would assume that the dash lit up, but don't remember if it was mentioned specifically.

This tells you the tech was plain (insert smart remark here ) All he had to do DRIVE it and it would have done it to him not the customer. Not even out the parking lot. WOW.

In this guys case the ecm couldnt compensate the timing off. This is what the ecms should be doing falling flat killing the engine saying look something is wrong here. Not just having the ecm just relearn. In most cases you have pointed out.

Yep, I don't want to find myself sorting out something like that. Being told my vehicle is repaired and discovering that corners had been cut, then needing to have it done again... None of us want to have to endure that.

All you can do it floor it that locks cams and puts ecm at max. It will work or dont.

Waited three hours this morning for them to tell me that they stream cleaned the engine (which i did last night) and added dye to the oil. Come back in a couple days. I made an appointment for next week. I'll wager that there will be oil visible by the time I return home. They said it looked like it could be coming from the valve cover, but possibly from somewhere else. I think that they have to follow a specific outlined procedure prior to saying it's what we all suspect it is.

So I dropped my motorcycle of at its respective dealer for its warranty work, they said it will be done next week. So I'll make the trip again next week. It kinda works out, I guess.

I don't know who looked at it, it looks like they keep all the techs walled off where you can't distract them. Once in a while one would wander through the waiting area, I checked name tags with the hope of some name dropping. ;) I don't recognize any initials on the invoice that might give a hint as to who the tech was, although at the beginning of the explanation of what was done, there's a five digit number. Does each tech have a number?

FWIW, here's what the tech wrote:
47203 Inspected engine and found oil residue on alternator. Unable to determine if it is engine oil or power steering oil. Could not trace leak back to any definitive location, does not appear to be coming from the valve cover area. Cleaned off all oil residue and added leak detection die to engine oil. Please have customer return in one week for leak recheck.

On a side note, speech to text seems to work pretty damn good. See above paragraph.

Boy, proper UV detection lamps are spendy, I'm thinking of heading to Wally World or the head shop (closer) to see if black light poster lamps (like back in the 70s) are still available. Duuuuuude.....

I checked with Jace. He doesn't know which tech that is off his head.
