    What type and brand is good quality transmission fluid? There is a lot of brands that don't have w/s on them.

    Toyota states in the 2021 specifications manual "Use Toyota Genuine *insert Coolant/Motor/Differential Oil here*" for every fluid on the truck except ATF, which they only specify Toyota Genuine ATF WS. There's even a note that says "Using transmission fluid other than the above type (Toyota WS) may cause abnormal noise or vibration, or damage the transmission of your vehicle".

    I really doubt any high quality ATF would hurt your transmission, but you may want to make your decision knowing what the owner's manual says. Especially if you're within the warranty period.

    All of these are specific for the WS requirements. The Aisin fluid (made by Eneos) is sold by the folks that manufacture the transmission, so they should know what it needs.

    I've tried the generic fluids with varied results in the past in Toyotas, so I'm hesitant to use one in my Tundra.

    I have been using this at work for a few years with good results. Says it's compatible with Toyota ws. I think we pay @ $25 a gallon.

    I've run Schaeffers exclusively for years in all my vehicles. I recently switched to High Performance Lubricants though, running it front to back, except for the transmission, gotta wait for my next fluid change, then I'm gonna fill it with HPL.

    I did not see it at Walmart.

    I am epicly against walking into a dealership - or even making a special trip.

    oh , and I'm thoroughly against spending too much money

    maxlife - $18-5 qts
    toyota - $12 - 1 qt

    however, I will waste a bunch of time reading dribble on bobistheoilguy. WS is all the same.

    my '06 sequoia & '96 4R loved maxlife. never an issue.


    and...it all smells like piss.

    Considering how often you change your trans oil, price shouldn’t matter. I personally stick to OEM or a WS oil and only pay $6-8 a quart. I would hate to blow up a trans by using a multi-purpose oil than spend the extra few bucks for a WS specific oil. Some people put a dollar value on the wrong things.

    As others have said, any WS fluid and you should be good to go.

    I personally went with Aisin WS fluid. Considering they make the fluid that Toyota rebrands and sells for themselves, this was what I was most comfortable with since it is OEM fluid simply at a discount. I bought it for around $5.50 a quart last year. Price is up to $6.38 on Rock Auto now. I bought 14 quarts and that was just enough to do a full flush.

    Glad someone mentioned that. I had a couple older bottles and wondered if they stuff could "spoil" cuz the fluid in them smelled so bad compared to any other auto fluid! Amazingly different odor than the Blue bottle (for my Gen 3 4Runner).

    Lol no it’s around 12 I think. I got enough to do the wife’s car too. I went with eneos bc it was right around 4-5 dollars a quart lol. Not sure if it’s synthetic or not but also has a higher flash point than WS.

    I take the "don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish" approach and use genuine Toyota fluid. Not worth the risk of tranny issues IMHO.

    If I had to change it every 6 months like I do the oil, I may take a different approach...
