interesting. we have yet to have a wastegate issue come in the shop. but if one does i'll keep posted here about that fun mess.

i myself keep with the old cars.. too much tech in the newer ones. (says the guy putting a 2015 engine in a 93 mr2.. LOL)

Numbers I've seen are around 16k of them sold thus far. I've asked a few field reps around the country and while it's impossible to get accurate numbers, seems less than 1% have been affected by the turbo issue. Not a great number for a new model release but certainly not as dramatic as the innerwebs make it seem.

Camshaft failures in 2007 release of 5.7s were greatly exaggerated when it first became known as an issue. I think the end number was like 27 affected trucks. Growing pains with a new model is to be expected

Exactly. The public really freaks out on Toyota issues mostly because we did it to ourselves (I've been with Toyota for 27years) with our whole "so reliable, you could practically weld the hood shut" mantra lol. The worst situations in a total number of vehicles affected sense, I've ever experienced from a failure standpoint were V06's and 3.5 timing covers. The rest of our little quirks turn out to be much ado about nothing

Things mechanical break no matter how good quality control processes are in place. Random occurrences or intangibles such as vehicle maintenance, how the vehicle is driven, etc are huge factors playing into the random occurrences.

Let me make sure I get this right. Toyota is telling you 1% of drivetrains have failed to date in a fleet that is only weeks or month old.
Further, they can't be bothered to get to the bottom of how many trucks have this issue. Your response to those statements is to question why people are are worried?

Could you please you elaborate on these two points?
-Use and Maintenance are random intangibles
-QC does not affect part longevity

Use is how a person drives. Are they abusive, heavy right foot, hard braking, hard runs on off road surfaces, High speed turns, no wheel alignments, etc.
Maintenance: Does person follow recommended maintenance? Or extend past oil change intervals, etc.
QC certainly does affect Part longevity. No checks during production lead to parts out of compliance equated to failures and excessive wear-shorter correct operation time intervals

No, they've said that LESS than 1% so there's that small difference. What makes you think they're not getting or have not already got to the bottom of it?

Ok, so I am a bit confused and looking for clarity. I have read and re-read this entire thread (insert “no life” joke here) and have read more than a few comments, many more recently, about new model years, never take first year of new generation, etc., and that it doesn’t matter, Toyota will no doubt make any issue it right. But at the same time, I have read in this thread that when similar issues crop up with the Big 3, there are no one making the same claims or extending the same courtesy. I am not trying to ruffle feathers here, but as someone looking to buy a full-size truck in the next year, I am genuinely interested in these perspectives.

And indeed, as a glutton for punishment, I did reach out in other truck forums, and the only thing I can take away is that brand loyalty is frickin’ insane: “brand x, which I have bought my whole life is the best and all others are sh*t.” It is almost impossible to get an honest answer - anywhere - along the lines of: “brand x is strong, and I love my truck, but…..”. And I guess the other take away is that people love to bash the Ridgeline - or any truck - that they don’t consider a “real truck”. I really just don’t get it. I mean, if it works for someone’s needs, who gives a sh*t what they drive?

If true that’s not good news. Bad turbos are just being replaced with the same exact part that can fail again.

I’m always skeptical of people who post on FB like this claiming they work for a large corporation. Turns out this guy works at a dealer in Austin, TX. He’s a shop foreman but maybe doesn’t know all the details.

A quick search shows that Brandon Whispell is the Shop Foreman at Toyota of Cedar Park in Texas. I wonder if he would have said that if he had known that his statement could and/or go public.

There is no reason not to take this man for his word. Indeed, it seems most plausible that Toyota is still trying to understand the root cause of the problem, its pervasiveness, and the best course of action for its remedy. Toyota must have also reached the conclusion that the frequency of the turbo problem does not warrant shutting production down. Whatever the case, as first-year production problems go, this one is a doozy. Best to let Toyota figure it out before buying a new Tundra IMO.

This isn't about believing or believing what he said, it's about if he had the authority to disclose that kind of information (problem returning after a fix) on a social platform. Has there been any reports of people experiencing the wastegate problem a second time after it was resolved?

I believe one guy did. Needed another turbo a week or two after it was replaced. However, I don’t think it was the actuator the second time around. I think it was a seal or gasket. Could have been installer error even.

I did not say that, you said that per your conversations with the national reps. “Impossible to know” was I believe how you phrased it.
