    Hello,

I am still awaiting my allotted truck to be built but have a few concerns.

CAT theft has been an intermittent problem in my community and I plan to get some plates installed to reduce the chance of theft. Now, I see that thieves are using a simple drill to steal your gas from the tank. And, this appears to ruin the tank requiring replacement.

Are there any current covers for protecting the gas tank?

No proven solutions exist. There are numerous threads on this already. Probably the best and only thing you can do is putting a vibration alarm on your tank when you park it at night in your driveway. It will scare the shit out of them and hopefully they shit themselves and run away.

I think chicken wire (*or heavier gauge*) attached to a 110v line -//with just a little water to sweeten the deal-// under your truck while parked will deter (*or CATCH*) the bad guys.

Can't drill if the bit is too long. Some inspiration from our 2nd Gens :D

Here I was reading this thread thinking it was going to be about locking gas caps, but you guys jumped to people drilling the tanks? Is that a real problem?

I hate to jinx myself, but cat theft and gas theft aren't really in the news very often where I live. I work in Vegas, but lucky enough to park in a secured lot at work. I live outside of the valley in a rural town. I didn't realize that people were drilling tanks to steal gas. I feel so sheltered.

Sadly its a real thing in Washington and trucks are a big target considering the larger tanks.

The vast majority of gas theft is probably far and away siphoning, so a locking gas cap would be a cheap deterrant. Drilling the tank makes noise so i think most theives would avoid that.

I wonder if anyone has added like a cabinet type lock on the oem gas tank door, seems like its a pretty easy mod and visible so they would see it right away and not even try.

I vote opposite. I’d waaaaaay rather a crook steals most of a tank of gas as opposed to cutting the fill hose or drilling into the tank. $100 vs. $1200.

I dont think they would come prepared to do both methods because if they are prepared for that, drilling would be easier for them and almost always possible. In my opinion, they choose their method before going out to execute. But i am not a thief so cant be sure of their line of thinking.

Catalytic converters are probably safe too. Good low-rider benefits.

Cutting off cats makes more noise and does not slow them down.

True, but you cut the cats and are gone in 30 seconds. Draining 30 gallons from a 1 inch diameter hole without ventilation is much, much, much longer.

Back in 2008 when this tank drilling was going on due to high fuel prices I replaced a few (~20) tanks. Almost all of them had a hole on top, and one on the bottom.

It’s just crazy to me that people would do this. I couldn’t imagine what a steel toe boot to the nuts would feel like.

I was thinking something like this https://www.acehardware.com/departm...mCkXnHNq__tNC7nxclBoCEFUQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Put the power to the truck and when they get dazed by it it will set the alarm off so you can grab one of these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B098SWH71G?_encoding=UTF8
    if they need reviving.

Thieves drain the tank on a Tundra? Insurance might just write off the truck. :anonymous:

No, a full tank is how you improve the value of a Yugo.

Yup…I saw this on the news also and did a double take as I was figuring the few/far instances of this happening was at a remote fishing hole or hiking trailhead especially as we thaw off around here.

They're not there to drain 30 gallons. They fill a small can and move on.

Well, instead of the John asking what you want done for $50 on a Friday evening, you can use this to your advantage and ask them if they know how to siphon fuel

Back in the day a buddy would take the cashier in the back for some nookie while the rest of us filled our tanks. One of many reasons why we now have cameras all around us.

And you lose the can plus the gas that you put in it.
