I agree. Saw one parked near me. Kuul little truck. Prolly will sell a lot of them all things considered with the bizarro world we live in. Ha!. I have two coworkers now that want to lose their fullsize trucks. A 21 RAM wanna be Warrior and a Sierra AT4. Both have long commutes.

Yes, I commute about 70 miles one way. So round trip is 140 miles. Between the tundra getting 15 and my beater civic getting 32, the gas difference between both vehicle filling up is $17.32/day! In a given week, $85. In a month, the difference between the beater and the tundra is $350.

As gas prices go up, I break even faster.

EDIT: I can add in registration and insurance, and say it cost me an extra $20 and still be well ahead having two vehicles. Maintenance and depreciation will cost screw the pooch for the tundra. So I won’t even consider it part of the argument. I don’t know your situation, but for me and my situation, saving 3-4000 a year is a lot and can be allocated to other things in my life outside of gas.

I have decided to ebike it to work one day and then drive this to work another day. It does get better gas mileage than the tundra by about 4 mph!

It's pretty fun I can't lie. The exhaust sound is so loud in stock form. Just shift it into manual mode and the valve's open up. 1st to 2nd really needs to get above 4K rpms to shift smoothly, so they really gets the sound loud! It's like a Supercharged Tundra on steroids.

I know my stereo sounds better in the Tundra, but I don't even turn the stereo up very loud in order to hear it....so intoxicating.
I am going to drive it up PCH from Socal to the Bay Area next weekend so that will be a fun time.

Yes. If you’re truly buying a beater car, depreciation on a 15 year old Subaru with 100,000 miles is fairly minimal LOL.

Spent all weekend looking for a used hybrid. It's a hot commodity now obviously lol. I was too slow on the first two I looked at, but I hope I found a nice Ford C-Max hatchback to replace the Tundra. The tundra has rust and i have other pickups I can use so it's not a huge loss to me other than the 5.7

That is not my experience. Here around San Antonio traffic is much worse than average since last week due to spring break which is typical. About 70% of the golfers at my golf course today (I work as a Marshal) were from out of State..again typical for a holiday type week..most from upper mid west..MN, IA, CO, MI, OH and Canada. I see no reduction in traffic or people out and about right now.

:annoyed: Hopefully the crowds thin before we head to Hill Country in late April to get wine!

Truth be told, it's not a bad thing that people are still spending to keep the economy going. We have friends who just opened a small RV park, hoping the high fuel prices don't hurt them too bad while they're trying to get the business off the ground.

At my current mileage, I can save significantly more money if I stop being lazy by ordering doordash.

    Last fill up @ $4.55/gal X 30 gal = $135.50

    Typical before the market panic was ~$3.50/gal X 30 gal = $105.00

I fill up about once every 3 weeks or so. $30 more over the course of 3 weeks at current prices - I can save A LOT more by buying less unnecessary crap.

Currently on track for about 7500 miles/year, it would hurt more if I was still doing 30k miles/year working in the Midwest - BUT gas is $1/gal cheaper in KS/MO than Oregon.

I think it’s safe to say this call is very individual based off of Milage of commute, frequency of commute, location which dictates insurance, and other factors. Good luck to everyone and I hope we all win.

I noticed an interesting oddity in gas prices the last two times I've filled up. Last week I happened to stop a one of the pumps that has ethanol free gas (where I always get gas for the mower), the price was the same as regular 87 ($4.23) so I just put in ethanol free. My commute mileage when from 15.5-16.0 to 17.0 (as read on the dash). Yesterday I filled up at the same pump and ethanol free was $3.99, regular garbage 10% ethanol was $4.19.

Nothing knew. It's known that ethanol has less energy, and so it takes burning more of it to achieve the same results as straight gasoline. Why do you think people don't like it's forced addition to fuel and oppose the claims that it is some how "greener" to use fuel with ethanol added?

So, I've been thinking hard on another vehicle and this one hit the top of my list. I'm certainly not in the market for one of these for the next year or two but I like to do my research for about that long to make sure I made the right decision (and to save money in the meantime). There was another thread talking about second vehicles that led me to this one. The only thing really holding me back and I haven't really done too much research on yet, I must admit, is what the yearly insurance cost rate is for one of these. From my initial search, it roughly shows that it'll be more than my Tundra and FJ combined. Can you confirm?

I initially told my insurance that I would do about 5K miles on this 3rd vehicle since I only drive it on the weekends. The quote for me was about ~$500 ish for 6 months, so about the same price as my truck ($1K per year but for 15K miles). I too thought it would be a lot more, so was happy with it not being too expensive.

Ah, that's a good point. I didn't think to take into account that it can be considered a weekend vehicle. I was pulling the numbers based on commuter numbers. Thanks for the response and helping me make my decision. I'm about $450 for my truck and around $250 on the FJ and both are labeled as commuters.

I pedal my butt to work 2-3 times a week during the months where weather allows. This year definitely have some extra motivation. I know it's not an option for everyone, but man it's a great way to start the day and has several obvious benefits. Wish more people would give it a try.

Our 3rd vehicle is a 16 Camry and lately it gets 80% or more of the miles we have been driving. Haven't driven my tundra in about a month, which is sad but I don't miss filling it up.

Gas prices in northeast Wyoming are $3.99 for regular and $4.99 for diesel #2. Luckily I only have to commute 10 miles a day (total). I expect gas prices will keep most tourists at home this summer and that is unfortunate. AND I don’t like the drop in the stock market. It’s putting off retirement. I feel way safer in my truck and have no plans to add a smaller car. I figure if someone is dumping a small car right now, it must need work.

Same here - I have to commute @ most 3x a week, 30 miles round trip. I can switch between my wife's vehicle and mine. I'd rather hold on to my truck and buy a car if need be.

Lol when i made this post gas was only $3.49. It's $4.29 now.

I ended up finding a replacement for one of the Tundras I have. Ford C-Max, made in the US, and 37mpg on the road trip home @80mph. It's not too slow or ugly, I gained 3 seats and there's more cargo room, rear leg room, and a bigger hatch opening than many other hatchbacks in it's class. Overall pretty happy with it so far.

I still want a Ford Maverick, but I might change my mind. I can at least put off trying to find one for a few years now.

Not the exact car, but similar:

I purchased a 2019 Nissan Leaf for 21k. It is all electric. I still have my Tundra for the dirty and off road stuff. But, for getting groceries or transporting the kids, the leaf is awesome. It’s not exciting. It only has 130 miles of range. But, for around town stuff ~1200mi/month, it saves money.

I installed the charger in my garage myself (used to do electrical work for a living). That cost was mostly the charger. The charger was around $500. The conduit and breaker and wire was probably $100 in total. I am fortunate that I have a sub panel in my garage where it is parked and charges. A charge typically takes 4-5 hours. At $0.11/kWhr it costs ~$3.00 to “fill up” on average.

I just paid $4.72 a gallon at our local UDF and filled it up. A bit costly but oh well.

I have looked at getting a beater to drive back and forth to work, which is only 8 miles one way
but its not worth having another vehicle added to my insurance.

I have a M/C I ride whenever possible, so i will be keeping the tundra till the wheels fall off.
