Bullcrap. Seriously? Has very little to do with the French as far as Nissan production. Get real. Lol. The Nissan, Renault, Mitsubishi Alliance has more to do with sharing ideas and each members supply chains. Pretty good idea it seems considering today's manufacturing invironment. No aip's to worry about. No cam tower leaks, wastegates, etc.

Credit where it's due, the '22 Frontier youtube ads are way better than the '22 Tundra ads.

Damn good commercials on local TV too occasionally. Spent some decent money. The Rogue commercials are great. Nissan sells a lot of Rogues.

I've had three 2nd gen owners come up to me to ask some questions and check it out. All three immediately mentioned how kuul the new interior is. Definitely not 2006 vintage. Lol....

I have to concur. Not into blanket comments trashing a manufacturer. Opinions are kuul but outright trashing is not kuul. Especially when the poster doesn't own the new Frontier. Quite frankly, bush league. Ha!
I edited this post. Was overly too harsh which wasn't my intention. Just a little harsh now...heh...heh. Just having some fun here.

What's kuul is that the powers that be at Nissan, no not Renault or France, decided to introduce the new 3.8L and 9 speed auto transmission with the 2020 model year to help with lagging sales on an old platform. Sort of like the Tundra was. Good in my book. The only issue that needed to be addressed was transmission mapping and was a simple reflash. My OEM Clarios battery does say Renault Nissan. Made in Wisconsin. Ah....Clarios took over Johnson Controls battery subsidiary that makes Optima. Not a French battery. USA made fwiw

Oh, I agree completely. Honestly, I'm sure you're aware I commented solely because I'm goofing around - I've got no dog in the hunt, as I've not owned a Nissan of any sort. I know people who have had nothing but issues with them; and I know people who have never had one issue. I do have to say that based solely on what I've read about them, given the choice between a Tacoma and a Frontier, I'd likely buy the Frontier.

I’ll be in the market for a mid-size in a few years and this is the first truck I will be checking out. Had a ‘18 Taco and that thing was truly a turd

This is the biggest issue I see raised in my research, but most also say that it seems awful for the first few days and then after a week you forget all about it. If I go test drive them I will definitely be paying special attention to how the steering feels and if the effort is extreme.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of a CVT in anything that leaves dry pavement. They can be kinda spongy and they shut down/pull power if they start to heat up. Self preservation is good and all, but that just kind of shows that they aren't built for that environment long term. This is the single biggest thing that keeps me from taking a super hard look at the Subaru Outback Wilderness. If they put a solid 8-10 speed transmission in that.... I would be sorely tempted.

That's awesome. Especially in an Xterra. I knew somebody that had one and apparently their computers have a tendency toward going mad and tanking fuel economy. They run, but they just suck fuel type of situation. IDK, just what I was told and I didn't really research them back then. I hope it survives and serves you guys well.

Funny thing is, I was shopping for a midsize truck when I wound up in the Tundra. Why buy a taco when it's the same price as an F150? Same for the Ranger, which was at the top of my list. Had I not completely forgotten the existence of the Frontier, I might have wound up in one back then. Nissan generally has good reliability, and I haven't heard of any major issues on the older Frontier besides it being outdated. Not really a deal to me, obviously, as I bought the "outdated" Tundra.

Right, and that was kind of my point. If I am going keep the Tundra and increase debt it's going to be for a fun car that doesn't have to be able to do anything but be fun. The appeal of the Frontier is that I could scratch the "I want to buy a car" itch without increasing debt, because I could likely get a straight across swap for my Tundra. The dilemma is that I don't know if I am willing to part with the Tundra.

The Ranger has been around, outside the US, long enough to have a track record that can be studied. It's a pretty decent little truck, and was my personal choice for a midsize a couple years ago. Some people say "dated" I say "proven." To each their own. I don't like the looks of the refresh coming to the Ranger, though. The only trim that looks good to my eye is the Raptor, and I can guarantee that it's going to be comically overpriced.

Same. The ZR2 Colorado was the only one that interested me, but it cost more than my Tundra and is less truck. Just can't do it.

    Just needed bigger tires. :D

The only way I'd do the current Taco would be with a stick shift. Thing is, if you add any options to them you are in the same MSRP as the Frontier, but Toyotas are being gouged like crazy. The TRD Pro with a stick isn't a whole lot more expensive than the Frontier's Pro-4X at MSRP, but you can't find one for less than $50K. I would say that the new Taco, whenever that happens, would be on the list, but I expect the price to be hiked enough to put it out of consideration.

I value your knowledge and practical approach to vehicles a lot, so I'd love to me ask you this: if you needed 8"+ ground clearance, 4x4/AWD, the ability to tow a RZR and a Kayak, and it's going to be your only rig, what would you buy today?

Haven't even seen a commercial for them.

Not if I can put a RTT on the roof and it is off roadable enough to get to camping spots that aren't full of idiots. This is all hypothetical of course.

My Frontier stock clearance is close to 9 inches in the front. A bit more out back. Fwiw. The side steps take away from that but easily removeable.

Budget would be whatever I can get for my Tundra. Lateral move would be the only way that would happen, and it's hard to nail that down. It would basically be the same thing I did to get the Tundra. Tell them "You can have my vehicle if I can have yours without increasing my debt."

Towing, at a minimum needs to be 3500 lbs. but would much prefer at least 5000. Per the manufacturer my trailer is 1265 lbs. and my RZR is 1297 dry. Figure 1300 +1500 for possible accessories and such. Add on a kayak, camping gear if it's not in the vehicle, and you can see where this is going. I don't like to work at a vehicles maximum capacities if I can avoid it.

I think the official number on ground clearance at the rear diff. is 9 inches. That's part of the appeal on that little truck. I know that the Frontier ticks all the boxes on paper. I'd have to drive it and see if it's good enough that I would be ok giving up the Tundra, and only if I can get a straight trade or better for it. Like I said before, if it's going to increase my debt I'll just do the "go big or go home" thing and keep the tundra while adding a second fun vehicle to the stable.

I stand corrected. Front is 8" with 256/65/17's. I have the same tires that come on the Pro4-X. Hankook DynaPro AT2's. Not bad. Good enough for the time being. Keep in mind that the rear diff is a 12 bolt Dana 44, (Nissan M226). Best in class. The Pro4-X used to only get that diff, but all 22 Frontiers get it now. That's why there are lot's of LSD and locker choices out there. Another plus in my book!

Well, I stand corrected. I thought it was the same on all trims, but they specifically call out the Pro 4X here. The 8.6 minimum is really close to as low as I'd be willing to go, but I'm sure you could raise it a little with nothing more than tires if needed.

The Pro4-X has Bilsteins, full skids, Hankooks, and the E locker, otherwise the height is close to being the same on the S and SV. The S and SV comes with Michelins and a tad lower in height. I sold the Michelin's asap and got a good deal on the Hankook AT2's. Prolly gained a half inch in height even though the same size tires as the Michelins.

One concern I’ve read about the new frontier is the engine being DI only and potentially running into valves collecting carbon build up. Not sure if that would steer me away.

True. DI V-6. No concerns anymore. I buy top tier gas and there are some decent fuel additives to help somewhat with the carbon build up that will occur. I only put on 8K miles a year so not losing sleep over that. I have a lifetime bumper to bumper warranty. Wasn't too cheap but no worries at all here.

The 22 frontier engine was introduced in 2020 I believe, I wonder if any of those owners have had any major carbon build up issues after a few years to put miles on them.

Same thing was said about the DI FA20 engine in the 2014-2021 WRX. If it's a real worry you could do an EGR block off plate and a tune. That was my plan in my WRX, but it can also be cleaned periodically.

No issues reported yet. Buy good gas. I've got a catch can on the way too. Well worth the money.

Are you talking about the cleaner that you spray directly into the intake essentially?
