Ok How bad is the 2022 really, was all set to get one but now not so much

I had a 2021 Limited DC Nightshade built and LOVE it just like I did my 2008. I bought the 2008 after the testers looked over the 2007 and in this case I bought the 2021 and let the testers deal with 2022.
I would highly recommend doing like others have stated and wait for the 2023 or later or get a 2021 if you can find one. Hell even a used one might be a better option since you have a 2011.

I work at a Toyota store. We have sold dozens and 0 have returned for any issues. Forums are a place where people like to complain and whine..it's the same on every single forum I've ever been on. The new truck will come with a warranty so there's no reason to worry. The chance of you getting a lemon is so small it's not worth worrying about. The new ones are better in every way possible as far as functionality (I love the previous Gen too). The front end is the only loss in my books.

The Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance is quite formidable and the future bodes well. Never was a great fan of the current gen Titan and previous gen Frontier from an aesthetics viewpoint only but both have/had decent reliability numbers. I chose the new Frontier over the current Tacoma which in fact has had transmission issues and for some reason went to the weaker Atkinson powerplant. The new gen Frontier V6 and 9 speed transmission came out in 2020. Transmission mapping was revisited otherwise no issues.

I agree with the forum aspect! If you sit here and read all the negative you’ll never purchase it. I think it’s an awesome truck! Way better that my previous gen! I have an early 11/29 build and I’m at 3500 miles and I haven’t had any issues. The only problem is the window seal that will be addressed when I take it in for service.

You can’t go wrong either way (2021 or 2022 Tundra in my opinion)…

Can you be unlucky and have an issue here or there with your 22?…yes, and now that you have read everything on here you will go looking for them.

Chances are (in this economy) you will pay close to the same prices depending on trim/location but the gas mileage, slight power/torque increase and dare I say Tech in the 22 will be further ahead than what you can get in the 21…so it’s all in what you ‘want’ vs ‘need’

I traded in my 2.5 gen for the 22 and absolutely LOVE it (no looking back here)…haven’t had any issues…little quality gripes here and there but looking forward to enjoying it either way.

I am not averse to new redesigns either…as I am on my 3rd redesign vehicle in 7 years without any issues (Subaru/Volvo)…but I do trust Toyota to come through should I have an issue as their stellar reputation depends on it…
…and from what I have seen/heard so far they have been owning up/fixing their mistakes in a lot of these areas.

So…take what you can from here and other sources and then make a decision that you feel you can live with.

2022 Tundra CM SR5 TRD Off-road with just under 5k miles. I only had one issue and it was resolved. All vehicle manufacturers have issues. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If they’ve never had issues then they haven’t owned enough vehicles or they’re in denial. You know the type, they only wear shirts and hats from the specific brand they drive and anything less is crap. They might even have a sticker with a guy peeing on another brand.

I’ve had way too many vehicles and some have been flawless and others have had some minor issues. The longest I’ve had a vehicle in the shop was just shy of thirty days, that was my 21 Silverado. The dealer couldn’t figure out the issue and when they did the part had to be ordered. Turns out they were comparing it to known issues instead of diagnosing it. The second was the Tundra and that was only because the part was super delayed. Both of those times I had a loaner and put miles on theirs instead of mine.

You have no idea what model he's even referring to. My father has owned GM his entire life (two Sierra's and now a Canyon) and they have actually been incredibly reliable with no major issues. I'm on my third Toyota but at this point I don't think Toyota has the same "made in Japan" clout that they made their name on, and the new Tundra is a perfect example of that.

I don't think its bad but I parked next to one yesterday and personally would not consider getting one. I just can't adapt to the new style and the interior was just OK. It was a green Limited... Pretty sure my 17 dominates a 22:). On top of that the cost of new trucks seems very high. I was OTD at 38k with a new 17; maybe "invested" $4500 in suspension, exhaust, wheels and tires- that is still way under 50+ K for a new one.
On a side note I had a coworker sell a loaded 17 Raptor (impeccable cond., cement with bronze wheels) for 45k to a guy at work-Score. He went on to get a new Bronco ($72K) but was receiving quoted for up to $103K! Good Lord.

My step father had a very reliable 2003 purchased new Suburban. The only major repair was a new transmission at 300k. Water pump and ball joints I consider more wear items. BUT he had a ton of small issues. Buttons and switches breaking or not working before it even hit 75k. He’s a big Toyota guys and eventually went back and it much happier but he felt he was served well by Toyota. Unfortunately the overwhelming majority of new GM owners I know have had major problems…burning oil. My SIL had an Equinox that would burn a couple quarts of oil between changes. Her neighbor had the exact same problem on his Sierra 1500. My co-worker has the same problem on his Colorado. And GM said it was normal. They all sold except for my co-worker.

Toyota isn’t what it use to be but companies go through nature cycles. Personally I would still take a Toyota over any GM product. The unreliable GM products I have seen first hand far surpass the reliable ones.

I traded my 21’ SR5 for my 22’ SR5. I have zero regrets and would do it again in a heart beat. Anybody “holding out for the issues to get resolved” is missing out on a great truck and a great driving experience.

One thing about Nissan, as everyone loves to bag on Nissan. There was, for the longest time, two Nissans. One was the crap, French influenced FWD CVT, which gives Nissan their well deserved bad reputation.
Then there's a side to Nissan that the French had little influence on: RWD based vehicles and legacy, reliable engines. So, vehicles like the Z, G35, G37 Q60, Q50, Armada, Titan (especially Gen 1 of those) are every bit as reliable as a Toyota.

I joke that my 16 year old Titan is "as reliable as a Camry) because it has been. And I've put 53k miles on an AWD Q60 with absolutely zero issues. Nary a single glitch or weird event has ever occurred on either of those vehicles.

I looked at the new Titan, and it's way more expensive and slower than my 2007, it's no longer class leading as it was 16 years ago, so I'm all in for the new Tundra, Nissan has spoiled me on Japanese branded truck to the point only another Japanese truck is an option.

You know your current truck better than anyone. I still rock my 2006 Taco and it's the only vehicle I have had since then. It has mostly city miles (Wash DC area) and some highway. The truck has aged well but I know it's nearing the end of its life. I rather replace it now with something I want rather than wait for it to die and settle on something I may not be happy with. Also, all the features will be new to me. I think the only safety feature I have on this truck are headlights.

I drove one and liked it. But I'm not sure what sets it apart at this point. Maybe you can sell me on that.

    Oh, and...

Consumer Reports gave the 2022 Toyota Tundra a reliability rating of three out of five, which is average. This rating is based on Toyota's brand history and the previous generation of the Tundra.Jan 27, 2022

The technology is lightyears ahead, it rides better, it has more power, it has the capability to tow more and that transmission is unreal compared to the old one. People can debate all they want on that but those are facts. Most of the guys that hate on the truck are ones that have to have the V8 or "it's not a real truck". Consumer reports doesn't bother me at all since all they saw was the initial batch of wastegate issues and assumed it's unreliable. As I said, not a single issue has been seen at our dealership including my own.

Had me 2 generations of Maxima’s myself when it was still the ‘4 door sports car’ then a G35 right after and loved them all…then Nissan kinda lost me.

So when we needed bigger vehicles for a growing family it was the new Volvo (XC90) and now onto my 2nd Tundra.

Volvo was first year redesign in 2015 and now first year 22’ Tundra.

Nissan wobbles. Those were great cars, and with Ghosn being ousted Nissan is on a renaissance.

I bought my wife a 2020 Corolla hatchback, flame blue, and we couldn't be happier. Toyota is definitely a great manufacturer, and the last few years the vehicles have been excellent.
Just a few years ago it seemed Toyota was resting on its laurels. I remember when for 30 years Corolla meant hubcaps and beige paint.

The new tundra is way better than the previous gen. The engine and transmission are impressive. Yes there are QC issues and some seal issues. None of the issues that I have experienced are critical and I expect all will be addressed within the year. I would order one now expecting delivery mid year to late summer and you should expect to have most of the minor issue resolved by then. Domestics will give you buyers regret. If you can wait , get a 23 Tundra. I tried them all before getting a tundra. I personally prefer how it drives vs Ford/chev/dodge. The dodge is the closest for ride quality.

Gotcha! I think this truck just puts Toyota on the map a little more for full size pickup. From the conversations I've had with higher ups in the organization, Toyota doesn't intend or try to be a major player in the full size market. They fully understand that Ford/Ram/GM are too far ahead at this point. They are also allocating a ton of funding towards hybrid/electric but I digress. I'm the new car manager at my store so I see every deposit that comes through for a new Tundra and I can say I'm finally seeing a lot of people trading other brands of full size trucks for the Tundra. In years past, the majority of people that bought Tundra's were either Toyota people or had a Tundra already. To keep it brief, they must be doing something right to be pulling guys from other brands but only you can decide whether it's the right move or not.

I don't see how you can give a reliability rating for something that's brand new.

…I would garner to say they spent quite a lot more in the marketing department also from the SB commercial…pace/personnel car at nearly every major sporting event, etc

Driving on the road around here I can see the heads turning and the double takes when folks realize it’s a Tundra…so growing pains aside it seems to all be working in their favor (will see if sales reflect that)

Yeah, Sweers said Toyota is simply unwilling to play the numbers game and to try to be all things to all people the way the domestics are. Toyota is a conservative automaker with a unique manufacturing philosophy that works against them in the full size truck market. The domestics are all “WOW L@@K AT THE$E $WEET NEW FEATURE$! Never mind that they’re untested; have you seen our extended warranty?!”, while Toyota is reusing tried and true parts from other platforms, beefing up parts of the truck you can’t see in order to make sure it has as long a service life as possible, and offering extremely long generations of dependable vehicles.

Just playing devils advocate here :boink: but I actually met my states lemon law requirements before I even got to bring my 22 home, lol. One way to meet our requirement is 30 days in the shop within the first year. As I stated in my other thread, AC problem discovered on test drive. I was one day shy of five weeks in the shop!

I still love the 22 Tundra though. To each their own, but I just shake my head at some of the naysayers on here. If you gave them a bag of money, they'd complain it was too heavy!

Is it really that hard to believe that the some people don't want to to take a chance a completely redesigned truck when there are early specimens like yours that qualify for lemon law right out of the gate?

Like I said, to each their own. Yes, I think there are some ridiculous whiners on here. The funny thing is the ones stomping around pouting, for the most part, down even own the 22. Those who have legitimate issues are taking them in stride, enjoying their awesome trucks. An issue with a new vehicle is aggravating, but take my AC for instance, a few years ago this would have been a one day fix or possibly not have occurred at all. Times have changed and with it parts availability, shipping, etc.

As others have said, go to any forum and it's full of people complaining with a very small percentage just posting to say how great their truck is (or whatever the forum). If someone doesn't like the truck, move on, why hang out in the forum designated for the truck to merely say you hate it or wouldn't take one for free (which of course is complete BS, but said a lot on here.)

Nevertheless, those who enjoy bitching and whining keep at it, those, like me, who love the 22, enjoy your trucks!

I am assuming that Toyota will be making some updates to the 2023 model year?
Can you tell me when you usually know what the updates are, and when a buyer can put a deposit down on a 2023 ?
    thanks
