Ok How bad is the 2022 really, was all set to get one but now not so much

Hello! I have a 2011 Tundra that I have loved. I opted for the smaller v8, the 4.6 I believe, for gas mileage purposes. With 185k miles I just spent by first $250 on a wiring harness for it. (Granted it did have an air induction pump failure recall but that $3500 I did not have to pay) . It has been a great truck. I was all ready to get a 2022 but was worried about "Model A" Hiccups. But these problems I am hearing about seem like more than hiccups and I heard that Toyota is now not using the system that threw imperfect parts out, which concerns me greatly. I used to sell Toyotas and that was my main selling point.
My question is how bad are these problems really with the 2022 Tundra, I can't believe I am saying this ( I have owned nothing but Toyotas for many years) but I am considering a GMC truck. Need something soon.

For this level of buy/investment one does not want to be worried. Buy the one you're not worried about.

    Yes there are many issues.
    Some are new design issues.
    Some are QC issues.
    Some are design failure issues.

General wisdom is do not buy the 1st of a new design of anything, let some one else play beta tester with their hard earned money, time, and energy.

If you buy a domestic, you will be infinitely more unhappy with your purchase regardless.

Try to wait, or buy a 21 Tundra.

Personally I wouldn't have a 22 Tundra if some one gave one to me free, I'd test drive around the block and post it for sale right after parking it.
But that is because I hate just about everything about it top to bottom.

If you are worried about reliability, don't buy a GM there are a lot of transmissions and engines being replaced and that is not a new model. I will give Toyota a year or two to get their issues on this new platform under control and then buy one. There are a lot of people that are very happy with the new Tundras.

    Too many, but not enough....
get a 2021 or wait a couple years for the 2024 or 2025 model. I wouldnt get the GMC unless you need a heavier duty truck.

How soon is "soon"? Any reason you couldn't wait for the 2023 Tundra to let them work out the kinks?

New or used? Can they still be found new?

I bought my '21 last June. Asking more for a friend.

It was used and the only one on the lot. It has 25k and I'm assuming must have been bought by an older couple and kept in the garage because it looks brand new and even smelled like it came off the factory line when I got inside. With 25k I expected some issues but all I can find is a minor scratch on the little plastic panel under the driver side headlight and a tiny scratch on one of the back doors. I expect that will buff out. All in all the only wear I see on this truck is the tires. So for me it is brand new but sadly in this terrible auto market I paid more than new price for this used truck but, hey, I'm not driving that old 08 kia optima anymore :D

Now I am more like :benchpress:

I bought a '22 and love it. Are there issues, absolutely! To each their own, but my feelings are they aren't major and will all be taken care of under the warranty. This is my first Toyota product and I am a little surprised with the QC for fit and finish type stuff, it's not terrible, but could certainly be better. I am not as patient as many posters on here, I am willing to deal with some growing pains to have it now vs waiting years.

The current environment isn't helping with the issues at all. I had to wait five weeks to receive a simple part for a repair. I was just told this week that the replacement fender flares and window trims are being redesigned and will probably be months away from being shipped/ready to install. Eh, whatever, love the truck and worth the headaches.

Well, nobody has to live with the decision except you, so weigh the info here in as level headed a position as possible. Try to keep emotions out of it. You'll get emotional responses to this, and you'll have to sort that out for the valid info.

Purely looking at the history of the model/brand, 185K miles is nothing on your current truck. Go through it with a fine tooth comb to get all maintenance up to the best standards possible and that truck will easily give you another 150K miles for less than the cost of a new truck. Odds are in your trucks favor that it will be less expensive to keep what you have. If you are going to upgrade you should be able to hold out to see if prices and inventories normalize. This would be my personal recommendation, so take it with a grain of salt.

First step is to analyze your absolute mandatory needs from your next vehicle. Some questions you need to answer:
    • Are you going to tow?
      • If so, how big is the trailer and how much does it weigh?
      • Will you need a WDH?
      • Consider how much of a buffer you want in your payload and tow ratings to have an enjoyable towing experience. Hint: You don't want to tow anywhere near the max advertised numbers in ANY truck.
    • How good does the fuel economy have to be to make you happy?
      • How good does it have to be if double digit fuel prices become a reality?
    • How much room do you have in your garage?
    • How many passenger do you expect to carry and how much room do they need?
    • How much bed space do you need?
    • Are you going to modify it?
      • What kind of aftermarket support is there?
    • Is there a trusted shop to work on it nearby?
    • How much do you want to work on it yourself?
These are the litmus test questions to see if you should even consider a vehicle. Thin the heard before you get invested in the idea of any particular truck.

If the Tundra makes it through the litmus test then you weigh the pros and cons of it against the others that also pass initial scrutiny. For the 3rd gen, are there issues? Yes. Are they bad? Some are, some are just cosmetic/inconvenient. Are they common? Not super common, but if you're one of the unlucky ones this doesn't help you. It's a gamble.

It is definitely difficult to find a new '21. There was one a couple weeks ago in my area that I was too slow to buy it. So I ended up purchase a "pre-owned" '21 Tundra with 1,700 miles. To me that is basically new to me.

To answer OP - I would hold off purchasing the 2022 until Toyota fixes all the kinks. Just seems risky to purchasing a +50k truck and it ends up with issues. But you might one of the lucky ones where you won't have any issues.

Can anyone name any vehicle that does not have some issues, regardless of a redesign or not?

I waited for the 22s cause i wanted a CM instead of my DC. My biggest problem was the size of the interior. It's smaller and feels closed in. I bought a 21.

Really, wow. Not one recall on all 2.5 gen Tundras? Pretty sure I had a recall or two on my 2007 Tacoma...super deadly truck though.

I understand your point and not arguing it. But from an individual vehicle standpoint (not the model as a whole), I've owned two vehicles that didn't have a single issue the years I owned them: Infiniti QX60 & Nissan Titan. Coincidence they are related brands brands? These are the only two brands I would 100% jump back into if they made a new style I liked.

....but, nevertheless, you are correct, what doesn't have problems? I bought the Ram 1500 in '19 after the redesign. I literally lost count but believe it was around 15-16 trips in for service the first year!! That's the shortest amount of time I've ever owned a vehicle, it had to go!!!

Exactly, thats all I am saying. Everything has issues at some point. I agree that new design roll-outs will have hiccups, yet if no one buys them, never get to resolution. The issue I have is that we kept hearing, next year new design, next year new design, next year....I wanted to see a change with Tundra from their bullet proof motor a styling; took a long time. Went to Ford as a result for 6yrs. They have finally done something and I hope I love 90-95% of what they did. I am certain there will be a few issues on mine [knock-on would that is not the case] but from what the masses are saying about Toyota, they are, for the most part, make things right for the vast majority of those that are currently experiencing issues.

I think the forums are the greatest thing to happen and. the. worst. If you have a problem with your truck you can come on here and most times find a solution. You also find every problem people are having. So I guess how many are sold and how many have problems ?I bought a 5th generation Camaro, had one of the earliest vins. If you went on the Camaro forum you think the car was pile of junk. Owned it 11 years with not one problem. So I will take my chances with a 22 Tundra

I think Toyota is a lot more likely to resolve any issues than other manufacturers. I heard of a few folks having problems with the infotainment system in some 2.5 gens. One trip to the dealer for an update and it was fixed. Meanwhile, GM still doesn't have fixes for the leaking rear window or infotainment system issues their trucks have been seeing since the 2019 redesign.

Yep. Sequoias and Land Cruisers, too.

There are specimens of each with issues, but they are vanishingly rare. They are still far more dependable than anything else in their respective classes. While it’s correct that no model from any manufacturer is 100% perfect, these are the far and away the closest.
