Yeah, when I test drove there salesman threw me the keys & said see y’a in a bit. It was also January, That truck apparently is sold now, but buyer said they can still use if for testing until their new demo comes in. I’m sure for a discount or some freebies. Don’t know whole story, I’m sure there’s more to it.

Wow, that view out the windshield, definitely like being in a bunker! Big difference compared to the previous Tundra

Everyone who puts bigger LT tires and a level on any generation Tundra is gonna be upset about fuel economy.

I kept my ‘21’s stock tires and wheels. Gas prices are getting high enough I might put them back on and get back to 18mpg highway lol.

I have this picture from before that somebody took. You can see the differences in the Cab and Windshield from the outside.
The windshield on the 2022 starts higher even though the truck is lower and it stops lower even though the truck is lower.
If one is tall in the seat or you like the seat high you will experience this "bunker" view - lol. You have me asking now have you been in a bunker ?
I recommend everyone with a 2.5 Gen go and sit in one just to experience this. Its interesting...and different.
So the 2022 is longer but its design makes it look smaller and lower. I think that's why the 6.5 bed on the one I tested did not make it look like a really long vehicle. I mean the Fords i have seen with the 6.5 bed - forgetaboutit. Way too long for me.
And that makes the 6.5 ft bed as maybe an option for me now. The back seat area for the Crewmax is only "adequate" now, SUV like. The 2.5 Crewmax Cab was class leading felt cavernous. You can put a lot of stuff in there. i know because we moved a year ago 8^0.
And this is why I myself keep harping on the importance of Truck Utility Space. After what I went through.
The DC is really shrunk down. Thats really too bad as I would have liked the DC with a 2.5 Gen Size Cab.

Damn, that is crazy. Reminds me of when I moved from a Chevy S10 to my Tacoma way back in November 2008. The 2nd gen (and probably also 3rd gen) Tacoma windshield is just like this. Like looking out of a bunker as compared to the Chevy. I didn't like it at first but I got used to it. But not ideal visibility.

So they create a truck that has higher crash test scores - but is the driver more likely to get into a crash now due to poorer line of sight ?

I don't know that it really impedes what you need to see in order to drive safely. But it does cut down your outside views. Maybe that is safer in a way because you might not be as easily distracted by your non-motoring surroundings? I dunno, but I don't really like the tunnel vision effect. I am used to it, but it is not my favorite thing about my otherwise beloved Tacoma.

And perhaps this is all for the best anyway to have extra roof structural integrity in a roll over. I almost had a chance to test it last week when I was about 10 miles from home after a 1000 mile road trip. I almost had to bail off the road where there was a pretty good berm and it would have been tough to keep the truck upright. Luckily it didn't come to that.

Former 09 Tundra owner and ‘21 157 inch wheelbase powerboost owner here. Only got to put 50 or so miles on my truck last week before We went on vacation but spent some time poking around in it.

Let me know if anybody has any questions.

For a number if reasons I had already decided to stray from the flock. Decent sized generator without having to store and maintain a separate piece of equipment was one of the big plusses that drew me to the Ford.

Do you agree with this review from last year. Have the pros and cons changed ? thank you

    @Breathing Borla

they discussed in this review what you did in your review about the clunking.

    Powertrain Could Be More Refined

"While the PowerBoost showed surprising refinement during our first drive video, a week at the wheel revealed some aggravations. There was a noticeable clunk from the rear axle, like a hard transmission shift, at about 10 miles per hour and under modest acceleration. And while the F-150's powertrain wasn't as recalcitrant as the plug-in-hybrid setup in the Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring, there was some confusion about whether to call on gas or electric power in sudden-throttle situations. That clunking, though, is what really annoyed us. It was consistent, and we aren't really sure we could live with it on a day-to-day basis."

I agree with that, it needs a little work smoothing it out. Not sure if it’s the motor going on and off, or the hybrid system or what, but that’s the best way too describe it, it’s just a little clunky.

it’s not terrible or anything, but one of those things that would probably get old and get more annoying over time

There's a lot to be said for this. Wife bought a 2020 Highlander about 8 months ago, in part due to the previous great gas mileage and the comfort level.

Having owned it for 8 months now....we're trading it in on a 4Runner for a few reasons.

    1. It has *THE* most uncomfortable seats ever. As in, a 15 hour ride from MO to VA resulted in 3 displaced ribs and a pelvis adjustment @ the chiropractor.
    2. "Button vomit." Buttons...everywhere, and some of them don't make sense. I like different buttons for different types of terrain...but you'd think they'd put them in or closer to the line of sight.
    3. With my truck and with the 4Runner, backup cameras are nice to have; but with the reduced rear visibility (as compared to the two previous gens) it's damn near a necessity. I insisted on a test drive for her after she said "Yeah I can't tell you how many times I hit our trash cans."

I feel a little bump in many conditions when it switches out of all electric mode and the Ecoboost kicks on. Noticeable but doesn’t drive me nuts. I do not feel a drivetrain clunk. I felt that in a ‘22 Silverado I once rented that I think had the same tranny. Not a minor bump but more of a kicked from behind sensation accelerating at low speeds.

Could be a software issue they found a fix for. Mine is a November 2021 truck built right before the ‘22 jobs started that took a couple months to get to the lot for sale due to supply chain issues. So would have had any early updates.

That 7.2kW generator is a perfect example of Ford offering an awesome feature that no one else has while ignoring simple, rampant issues like drivetrain reliability and glitchy electronics. It really is a great feature and a game-changer if you use your truck for work or homeowner projects. With all the issues most Ford owners I know deal with on a regular basis, I’ll just keep running an extension cord lol.

And I’ll be curious to see if there are rollout issues with the hybrid Tundra as well.

I'll be moving from a Tacoma so the dimensional differences between the two Tundra generations are going to be a step up regardless. In terms of windshield visibility, the Tundra will be a net gain as well. My wife's Highlander is almost as bad too, visibility wise, so I think its a Toyota trend.

*stares at all electric F150 order.

But after 4 months and 4500 miles I can say the only transmission issues I have are in sport mode and it's on one particular hill I encounter daily. When I'm in stop-n-go it kind of jolts when I'm creeping along. Although to be fair my 21 TRD pro did the same jolt, albeit not has hard.

The only issue I really have is I feel like I'm starting an F16 every time. I run sport mode, 2wd, w/o traction control. My start up sequence is to turn dial to sport, wait for the auto shift to AWD, turn back to 2wd, press okay and disable traction control and press okay. Apparently that can't be saved to my profile.

I'm hoping the windshield of the '22 will be less of a rock magnet than my '05 and the '20 Tundra my friend here has. I go through a new windshield every single year, and the aftermarket glass is nowhere near as good as the OEM stuff in terms of durability or noise reduction.

It seems in the last 10 years all windshields are shit. I used to beat the shit out of my cars growing up and my cars never cracked.

That’s what i got the twin turbo for. To get away from other vehicles as quick as possible. I hate having vehicles in front of me now. I just always assume they will kick rocks. And going by that philosophy I’ve been lucky so far

On my Titan, my original OEM windshield lasted 7 years. Unfortunately, for my truck, there's only 2 choices, a super expensive OEM windshield that Safelite won't even order if I asked them to (and it's 4x expensive) or an aftermarket one made by "Fu Yao" which, although being made in USA, is a Chinese company. I'm on my 3rd one, this most recent one broke on the same day I had it replaced. I now don't bother changing the windshield anymore

Not sure if they actually weighed the trucks or pulled weight from the manufacturer website but…
    Tundra payload = 1410 lbs = 7230-5820
    F150 payload = 1705 lbs = 7050-5345

I am curious how choppy the TRD tagged suspension is they mention. Didn’t think that would make a difference.

I think the f150 for being leaf springs drives really nice and is on the floaty side. The platinum tundra I drove felt planted and about the same as my f150. I’m curious how the lightning will ride as it has full coil suspension too.

My general impression of the 2022 Tundra is it will probably shape up to be a solid vehicle with Toyota level long term reliability once they work out the kinks. And it will serve the customer base that is drawn to a combination of its specific set of features and the Toyota name and way of doing things well.

But Toyota did not aim to blow anybody out of the water with one feature or some combination of features that puts them leaps ahead of the rest.

It was more that they expected their pat on the back simply for finally engineering a completely new powertrain and platform after 15 years. Completely new tech, a few more hp, a few more pounds of torque, a few more mpg. More buttons, more going on on the screen.

Now we take another 10-15 years to refine it and smoothen out the glitches. Maybe tweak the front end here and there. But they count on the Toyota name to carry it through this design cycle, not on it blowing other half tons out of the water in any specific way.

I found the tundra platinum to have a very planted ride, I put it to comfort and was pretty impressed, the ford bounced around and had more axle hoo for sure

I’m full disclosure, the roads here suck, especially in the winter

In the review they state the Ford had the max payload/towing package. So the numbers they give are accurate for their truck.

I think the review was largely pretty fair, and not at all divergent from observations from TFLtruck, Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk, and other sources.

Unfortunately Toyota has produced an “also ran” out of the gate as far as features journalists care about. Maybe the Tundra gains back the reputation for reliability and durability to make it up to tight asses that like to keep trucks forever without it costing a fortune in maintenance.

I will wager that the entire TNGA-F platform was developed 100% first and foremost for SUV’s. Toyota wanted a solid platform for the Land Cruiser 300, Lexus LX600, Land Cruiser Prado, 4Runner, Lexus GX550, and Fortuner. The Tundra is an adapted afterthought with limited market share, Toyota did the bare minimum using parts already in the parts bin and it shows. The Sequoia will be a better vehicle in its class than the Tundra is in the 1/2 ton pickup segment.

Maybe Toyota pulls their heads out of their asses and fix the shortcomings but it will take them 7 years to do it. So the 2029 will finally get more payload, front tow hooks, and power on board, a face lift and nothing else. By then the Big 3 will probably have full EV’s available and hybrids with 500+ hp with self driving and all sorts advances.

Came across this in my research. Doesn't apply to me but may to those with baby seats. So sharing.
The reviewer is 5 11" and his wife asked him to sit in the back seat, because when she did it - she was not happy.
I will let you find out what happens.

Other than that, this video helped me to get confirmation that the 3rd Gen is indeed proportioned best with the 6.5 bed, due to the elongated exaggerated nose. And for me as a 2.5 gen owner, the loss of cab space is made up by more bed space.

Remember what Michael Douglas says to Danny Devito (his lawyer) in the War of the Roses movie with Kathleen Turner, when they were dividing up the house, and Danny tells Mike that she got better parts of the house. Michael Douglas says "I got more square footage"
Toyota did a bad bad thing taking square footage out of the cab. Get some back with the bed.

I like the Blueprint and Green when the sun doesn't hit them. Its overcast in this video so the Blue looks ok. But when the sun is on them the Blue is kind of purple and bright and the Green is too pukey for me. Its not British Green which would have been ok. JMO if you have Blue or Green, don't get your shorts in knots. thats why there are more colors.
oh and the reviewer loves the grill.

That size tire with 3.31 rear end is always going to be a bad time (unless he regeared, didn't watch the video)
