2022 tundra gas mileage

I owned a 2019 tundra 4x2 crew max. However, I sold it and bought a 2022 platinum 4x2 crew max expecting to get better gas mileage. However, I have not seen much improvement. I live in the south, mostly drive alone with no load. Best I have seen in gas mileage to date is 18.3mpg on a 180 mile road trip at an average speed of 79mph mostly interstate. Also, i have noticed that city mileage is horrible only averaging 11.5mpg. If the average is suppose to be 20.5mpg with 18mpg in the city, im confused? I have now driven my truck over 1100 miles. How long does it take to get broken in? Will the fuel mileage improve? I'm disappointed.

 

I'm mostly inside the city also and only getting 15.5mpg. alone and no load. I'm at about 700 miles. I think I've come to be ok with that mileage range

 

Hey, thats a lot better than 11.5. Do you have a 4x2 or 4x4?

 

4x2. I'm trying the whole acceleration at 2k or below thing someone mentioned but so far its the same. no great change for me as long as I dont dog it I guess

not overdoing it while stepping on it at lights and keeping it at or below 2k rpm. sorry if that wasn't clear. I'm consciously trying to do the coasting to a stop thing instead of breaking late when I can remember. I'm realizing how much more it takes to stop this truck compared to a GMC Canyon

 

From the videos I've watched it's not much better than the previous gen. It is better, but not as much as people thought they would get when they see V6 TT / iMax.

There’s a thread on this already, but before my leaving kit and hair larger tires best I was getting was 16.9 That’s 80 mile total trips with some mixed driving, I drive sensibly with no hard acceleration. When I drove intentionally like an old geezer never going over 60, I was getting the advertised mileage. 60 mpg in Texas is almost impossible unless you back road everywhere. Otherwise get on the highway and 70ish is acceptable and less likely to get bulldozed by a minivan

 

You’re trying to get the advertised fuel mileage going 80mph? Not gonna happen. Trucks are bricks. Aerodynamic drag really kicks in around the 60mph mark. Anything over 60 begins to decrease your efficiency exponentially.

 

To be honest it wasn't worth upgrading for MPGs alone....it won't be very noticeable and even if it is, it will take you years to make up for that.

 

And I would add, I would be ecstatic to get 18.9mpg going 80 in my 2019 CM. I get more like 14.5mpg doing that.

 

I’m getting way better gas mileage outta my 22 than my 16 Tundra. I was averaging like 11Mpg and now I’m at like 17MPg it’s an improvement. Let’s be real here though, if your intention is to have averages that are in the 20 that’s a pipe dream. You’re just not going to consistently get that in a truck. Buy you a Prius. Lol

 

I bet you can get 20’s in the new tundra with the appropriate driving habits. Few to none are willing to drive like that.

 

Very true...I can average 17MPG with the 5.7L
I've had 3 of them (all stock btw) and averaged between 16-17MPGs in all of them, but then again, I drive it like a grandpa lol
So I would easily get 20 in the new one I would guess

 

Manufacturer MPG estimates are not real world, they are usually marked at 50-60mph, flat terrain.

 

Maybe all you guys driving alone on the interstate and in the city in heavy traffic should have Corollas instead of Tundras.

 

I can get mid 18’s in mine. If I drive 60mph on level pavement. Most of the time with relatively conservative driving I get about 15.8mpg average. Stock with a camper shell.

 

I remember in chemistry textbooks they tested every experiment at perfect conditions. im sure there are a lot of really tiny asterisk every where on the manuals and related items. 20mpg's are wishful thinking

 

Possibly, but some of us cant "pour ourselves" comfortably into a corolla. Wife had one, my shoulders always touching the door, low roofline, and our shoulders almost touching each other. Sometimes cabin space / comfort matters as well!

 

Or Camry, or any other higher fuel mileage sedan. Think the point was driving trucks as commuters doesn’t make sense. Most of us know that. I need the truck too many times to not have one. Otherwise I would drive something more efficient. Doesn’t make sense to have 2 vehicles though for me.

 

I got 20 in my 21 Silverado driving the exact same way I drive my Tundra

 

when I was in the police academy an accident reconstruction officer spoke about some of the things he's witnessed through his career and of course showed many photos and videos. he said after everything he's seen he wouldn't let his kids drive smaller vehicles. and that stuck with me after all these years. higher fuel mileage would be nice but I got the truck in case of worse case scenarios.

If you’re running boost at 80mph, your gonna be sucking gas. The 5.3 Silverado with its cylinder deactivation, natural aspiration and tall gearing will pull some impressive MPG’s. Even more impressive at 65mph

 

I think once summer blend hits the mpg will jump quite a bit in these. My 5.7 loses 2 mpg on winter blend. If the 3.5 follows suit op will be right on epa numbers. These motors won't be fully "loosened" up until 8-10k miles. Tight tolerances, efficient lubrication, and metals that wear less under friction take time to get a little wiggle room. Heck my bass boat picked up 3mph on the top end between hr 10 and 100 and lord knows I've adden a ton more tackle in that time frame.
Ive also never known Toyota to fudge mpg numbers like others. The 3 Toyotas I've owned have hit or slightly exceeded their ratings while stock without much effort.

At 88-90 mph on 81south I only get 15.4-16.. may need to trade for an H2 as I “hear on internet/you tube” some getting 20 with those!!

We'll ignore the fact that I switched to driving our Corolla for my trip to work. I drive 200km, park the car for two weeks, drive 200km home....

 

I've gotten 22.5 on a 30ish mile trip to Brenham, but that was during break-in, and I stayed mostly between 55 and 60mph, never getting above 65.

I got 19.6 on a 50ish mile trip to Austin, setting the cruise at the at 70 and slowing down for speed limit changes.

After 3k miles, I'm averaging about 17.3 overall, most of which is highway miles (I live in rural Texas; you're going to spend the bulk of your time on the highway here).

My commute to work is about 32 miles, and I usually get 16.something on those trips, but I'm also usually running a few minutes late and driving 75 most of the way.
