Part of their slow walk into EV has to do with statements Toyota corporate has made about how many workers they would have to let go by going all electric immediately. In Japan alone it was over 30k workers, due to EVs requiring fewer parts and being simpler to manufacture. They also realize that pure EV in its current form doesn't meet the needs of many consumers. They are just taking a slower approach imho.

Ford stopped taking reservations for their F150 Lightening. At 200,000 it will take years to deliver.

Of course the proof will be in the pudding, but it looks like Ford has hit an EV home run.

The Blue Oval stopped accepting reservations for the much-hyped pickup on Wednesday as it prepares to start fulfilling orders in 2022, a company spokeswoman confirmed to Insider. "We've closed reservations so we can start accepting orders," reads a message on Ford's website.


In January, Ford will begin inviting reservation holders to configure and order their trucks, the spokeswoman said, with customer deliveries set to start in the spring. But Ford's massive bank of Lightning preorders means it could be years before some people who placed a deposit actually receive their trucks. Anyone who missed the boat on reservations will need to hang tight until orders open more widely. That wait will be even longer.

Ford has raked in nearly 200,000 Lightning reservations, CEO Jim Farley told Automotive News last month. Even if a large chunk of those people doesn't go through with the purchase, those orders will keep the company busy for years. Ford hasn't said how many Lightnings it plans to build in 2022 and 2023, but it aims to ramp up production to 80,000 trucks annually by 2024.

 

I almost signed up for a reservation as it was $100 and Refundable. I was 98% I would not buy tho.

I am assuming that the Cyber Truck will do that as well when it finally gets released. The Tesla forum squad denies it, but a lot has changed in the world since the initial announcement.

I went half-way with a gasoline hybrid "truck". It's not a Real truck, and I won't argue it can do anything my Tundra can do, but it does what I need it to do 95% of the time and it gets excellent gas mileage on 87 Octane. 55mpg on my daily commute (one way shown here).

Saw these dudes running i-17 N in Phoenix the other day. One of em pulling empty, the other loaded to what I assume was "full capacity"
I couldnt tell if either of them was driverless, but it was still cool as hell to see em

 

I like that. I have no problem driving one of those for commuting or weekend trips.
I kind of need a full size truck for work but I can always commute with a Maverick and leave the Tundra at the office for construction site runs.

 

Just google lithium mines and cobalt, super green. And if ya think china has got us over a barrel now wait till we are all driving ev’s

Early morning thoughts:

Not to fret on EVs, let's allow plenty of time for all the kinks to get worked out in range, batteries and charging them in the same amount of time it takes to fill a tank now, all the lack of charging stations thing and all the supply chain issues preventing mass production (not to mention lowering pricing) and set our sights on the 2040 models, in the mean time enjoy the ICE machines!

 

Couple that with cold weather and you have a bigger problem. In summer my Avalon goets 50+mpg, winter upper 30s. Still not bad for a full size car.

An electric work truck towing with a load in sub 30s weather is not going to see anything near the ranges being stated for etrucks. I’d bet 25%. Toyota won’t even sell RAV4 primes in WI most likely due to not being able to deliver promised range in colder climates. And those are plug in hybrids not fully EVs.

That’s the USA where at least the upper half the country sees some pretty cold weather half the year. Then there’s Canada. Electric Cars in cold weather, sure, with diminished range.

Electric Trucks have a long way to go imo to get to a level of useable range. The 22 hybrid Tundra is a mild hybrid at best with only a small mpg increase but improved torque &hp. I’m sure cold weather, loads, and towing will diminish the “hybrid” Tundra extra mpg capability over the ICE. We’ll see when they get out and do some work.

 

My brother drives an EV and relies on a charging station at work to top his battery for the drive home. One day, the charging station was in use by a Tesla all day. This is what happens when you run out of juice. No practical way to charge a stranded car in pinch. He used his last few miles looking for a non-broken charging station. He went 0 for 3. The infrastructure is just not there yet.
I asked him if he is going to start carrying a generator.

 

I've warmed on the idea of a hybrid. I think they are the next logical step in automotive advancement. Virtually unlimited range (because of gasoline is everywhere) with regenerative braking. Regenerative braking just makes so much sense. So much energy is wasted into the atmosphere as heat when braking. Capturing some of that energy and using it for acceleration, even at less-than-perfect efficiency is a win. Our next family vehicle will probably be a Highlander hybrid.
