    Been thinking...

ever since my citizenship paperwork went through, the wife and I have been heading out of town almost every week. We've spent more money on hotels in a month than i have in a whole year. first it was San Antonio ($ 300 in hotel) then came Austin ($350 in hotel) Houston was next ($300 or so) have a drive to South Padre island in 2 weeks and 2 nights ran 600 bucks. Vegas for 4th of july and well yall dont even want to know what that ran lol. i want to surprise the wife and get a camper instead of spending that money on hotels and put it into our travels in other more lucrative ways. Never owned a camper and the only thing ive ever hauled was a small flat trailer carrying a wrestling ring to a show (good ol' times).

Is it much difference from a hitch to a 5th wheel? What campers would yall suggest (money not being an issue) would have to be something comfortable and nice. Currently its just her and me as we have no kids but maybe down the line...and very far down the line i mean lol. Will be towing with the 2015 CM short bed

so far i like this one http://www.coachmenrv.com/brochures/2014/2014brookstonebrochure.pdf

Wow - that Coachmen is REALLY nice! I was going to suggest something smaller, if it's just the two of you. But get what you want. I'll point out a few advantages of smaller - easier to tow (change lanes, get gas, grab a quick but to eat while on the road, etc). With the big units, you have to be careful with where you pull into, in case they don't have an outlet... It's also easier to get into campsites (physically) with a smaller unit. Better fuel economy with the smaller units too, in case that matters to you.

I'm partial to Forest River products. Had a used pop-up for 5 years that held up amazingly well. Traded it in earlier this year for a brand new Mini-Lite 2306. It's perfect for our family of 3. You don't likely need bunk beds, but Forest River offer many other floor plans (including slides) in the 21 to 25 foot range.

Ours weighs 3850 dry and I get about 12.5mpg while towing.

But, like I said, if you can afford it and want a bigger unit - go for it! My whole family absolutely LOVES camping. Great "family" activity...

yea size would be an issue but you just have to admit having all that space must be nice lol...the more i look the harder it will be to chose. Did i read right? 12.5 MPG while towing? :boom:i only get about 11.5 on the highway with the lift and tires.
Came across this Pinnacle http://www.jayco.com/products/fifth-wheels/2015-pinnacle/38flfs/ but with a tag of 86K i rather buy a house haha

the brookstone is about half that

Hate to burst your bubble but these campers are way too much trailer for these trucks. You need to be looking into 3/4 ton or 1 ton trucks if you want something that big and heavy. The hitch weight alone on the smallest trailer is 2,350 pounds! with a empty weight of 11,230. Too much trailer for a half ton!

You should let these know that they can't pull a 5 wheel.

Never said tundras can't pull a fifth wheel. The OP is looking at HEAVY fifth wheels, not little lite ones like above. Also think the 5.7 would be fine pulling 12k pounds but it is illegal to pull that much with it. If an accident happens the op will lose everything. Have to stay within limits. They make plenty of fifth wheels that are 1/2 ton approved.

That trailer in the second pic isn't exactly light. Legal? Heck if I know. I do know there are hundreds of pics on Google of Tundras pulling all sizes of 5th wheels all over this country and some are pretty darn big. Safe? Don't know that either. Certainly common sense plays a big part when towing. Some of these trucks may have some serious aftermarket rear suspension mods which are available. Of course everything has it's limits. Safety first. I agree with you that it is better to play it safe than sorry. Best thing is to go to a reputable dealer who knows his stuff and get the proper trailer setup that will meet your needs.

So how does that play into our towing capacity? Total weight can't be over 10,000? and how does hitch weight, total weight all play into the grand total... and is truck weight included? I never towed anything, yet!

Hitch weight is to be included in the trucks payload or GVWR. Take your weight of your truck with you in it and subtract that number from your GVWR. That will give you your payload or how much you can haul. GVWR is for the truck only, not the trailer. Overall these trucks are rated to tow somewhere around 10K. As long as the trailer doesn't weigh more than that with a hitch weight that doesn't put you over on GVWR you are good to go. ;) I hope that makes sense.

Would it be good to also subtract typical weight of camping gear, gas, etc that I usually haul from my GVWR? I don't tow anything that heavy but curious as to what factors need to be accounted for to determine what my truck could potentially tow with tow/haul package in case I win the lottery and upgrade.

Absolutely. Everything (all weight) you will be putting in or on your truck should be accounted for. Wives, kids, dogs they all make up weight. Remember you can always put camping gear in the trailer to get your GVW down. Just make sure you are not overloading the trailer. They also have a GVWR.

F-550? That's definitely a potential Mad Max mod truck. Take off the Ford badges for Toyota badges. Make it a Tundra 550 and maybe we can help mod that too! (since there is no diesel yet)

The 550 is contingent the ranch seller doesn't back out. From what I've heard he's gotten several offers throughout the years and always backs out. I gave him a number and told him to take it or leave it, I'm not here to waste my time nor yours.
