Trade my 2015 for a 2017?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has traded in their Tundra after a few years for a newer one. I haven't really though about it before, but i took my truck in for service this past weekend and they asked if i wanted to have it appraised and possible trade in for a 2017. It kind of got me interested. I have a 2015 CM SR5 (w/ front bench seats) 4x2 4.6L and would probably just be looking at getting the bigger 5.7L in the SR5 trim, if available of course.

Any of you have experiences or traded in recently for an upgrade?

If they make you happy with the deal , go for it. Who doesn't like a new Tundra?
You will like the 5.7 for sure.
I thought about the same thing, but they no longer make Tundra's in the best color ever, so I'm staying as is.

 

I have not and don't plan to.. Already have the 5.7 and sunk enough money into it already. But if you're upgrading engines (and you have a need for it) and can afford it, why not? Just remember the dealer is doing it to get you into another payment (maybe even higher). End of the day, it's what do you want vs need.

 

The trade in value for my 2015 and the purchase price for the 2017 will have to make me happy, and i would definitely want to stay around my monthly payment now. I know that i can recoup my down payment, and maybe get a little extra to throw on the new truck. I may go in one of these days and swing for the fences. I don't need a new truck with a bigger engine, but it sure would be nice.

From what i have seen where i am in Nor Cal, there are more 5.7L in 4x4 than in 4x2. Do i need it? Not really. My wife has a 4x4 4runner if we ever needed to get through snow or anything like that. I don't off-road much and the truck is my daily driver.

 

All factors consider. Need vs want. Being the USA, we always go for WANT! USA! USA! USA!

Slippery slope. Do you really NEED to trade in your two-year old truck? haha.

I do recommend 4x4, however. Traction on these trucks is worse than normal cars (being so light in the rear).

 

Ah screw that, you def need a new truck with a bigger engine! And of course 4x4...Trust me you will do it and never look back.......

 

Considering trading my '14 CM for '16 PRO CM

 

A friend of mine has a family friend that is a sales manager at a local Toyota dealership. I might run in and have a chat with him and see what he can do. I'll be sure to ask about the 4x4 first

 

This is one of the reasons I always try to get the model with the biggest engine and the most bells and whistles. Less chance of out-growing it and let's face it, we will likely wear out our attention span long before we wear out the truck.

 

So i was able to go and look at a couple trucks this past weekend with the 5.7L. For a MGM (exactly like my current truck, except the larger engine) $36,400 OTD. For another Truck, but in Black, $36,300 OTD, so fairly close. I'd rather stick to the MGM as i like how it looks (when it's washed haha).

Both dealers offered the same trade in value for my truck. Gonna sit on it a bit and see if anything else pops up or if i can haggle lower as time goes by.

 

I see people say 5.7 has better resale value all the time. Does it really have better resale or are people just saying that because the price is higher just like when you compare to new.

 

If you get a 2016/17, make sure it has the 38 gallon tank. It comes w the sr5 upgrade package and higher trims. Don't forget that the 2018's will be a refresh so you may want to wait for that or get an even better deal on a leftover 2017. Something to think about.

 

I am actually not that interested in the SR5 upgrade package as i would prefer the front bench seat. I found a 2017 MGM SR5 (w/front bench) 4x2 5.7L with all weather mats and spray on bed liner for $35,900 OTD. If it is still around on Saturday, i may go in to get them down a bit more and trade in my 2015.

Here's my real problem...my wife gave me the green light to just do what i want and get the 4x4, so now i am starting to look at those. But is it really worth +$4000 than a 4x2?

 

Looks like i am going for the 4x4 now. Now to get that price down as much as i can before going to see it in person. So far at $39,800 OTD for a MGM 5.7L with front bench seat, all weather mats, spare tire lock, and spray bed liner. I have two dealers going at it so hoping for more of a discount.

 

A CM 4x4 5.7L SR5 with the SR5 upgrade package (bucket seats, 38 gal tank, etc), safety and convenience package (sonar and blind spot detector), all weather liners, spray in bed, deck rail, and tie down hooks. $41k OTD (includes taxes and fees). MSRP was around $43k. Decent deal??

 

Are you dead set on the Crewmax. The reason i ask is that i got all of those options (except the 38 gallon tank) but in a double cab for $8K less. The CM is more sought after so you can typically get a stronger deal. I didn't even weight the pros and cons for my day to day usage and determined the extra cost was no deal for me. But, i also might be in the same position you are on the 4x4, ignorance was bliss until i finally opt in to the CM

 

I'm definitely set on a CM. I have a 3 and a one year old in car seats and the space back there is important for our family.

 

So far it's looking like I'm getting $500 under the average savings for my area.

Wait till the 18s come out, upgraded LED headlights and fog lights and Toyota safety.

 

I trade at least every two years and have always had increasing amounts of positive equity to put down towards the next truck. The key is to never fiancé greater than 60 months and do reapply all your positive equity towards the next ride. I just traded after one year and only had to fiancé 18k on a 50,000 truck. I didn't even have to pay all the new taxes (tax credit) and took no money down; just my equity.

As far as purchasing strategies go; do always get at least two or more dealers to evaluate the value (appraisal), do always make a deal based upon retail to retail value. You must appraise your own vehicle using Kelly Bluebook/Edmunds and do the appraisal fairly and accurately. Your custom add on rarely add to the value of the vehicle and might hurt it.

 

Dealers are trying to make room for the '18s right now. You could get a better deal out of them if you wait another month or two. Did the dealer show you one specific vehicle or where there a few on the lot? Like everyone else has said, it's up to you.

 

I traded in my 2016 SR5 4x4, only 9k miles, for a 2017 Cement TRD PRO.
If you can get a good deal on trade in, I say got for it.

Pulled the trigger on the MGM 5.7L 4x4 last week. Got a pretty good trade in value for the 2WD and am happy with what i paid. Steps are on, tonneau cover up next once i get some new rubber strips. Man is the 5.7L nice to have.
