Makes sense. Unreal we are going into 5th month of production here and still have not ID’d the cause.

There is a distinct difference between you not knowing the cause and Toyota not knowing the cause.

Are you inferring Toyota does know?
With these recent build dates failing, that would be extremely distressing.

Is this per TSB unless it goes into limp mode?

Here is an earlier post from 1/27. Note same code as guy above.

    P25B473 Turbocharger/Supercharger Wastegate "A" Actuator Stuck Closed
    TSB Says

This earlier guy got turbo replaced, but this later guy above got sent on his way.

I think by now there's enough information out there that indicates there was a bad batch of engines which made it into a very small number of vehicles and we're still seeing a trickle of reports as this impacts folks. I do think it odd that Toyota hasn't seemed to pre-emptively contact people who may be impacted so maybe there isn't a sufficient way to track which engines went where, who knows. They've just let out that they're looking at the ability for front tow hooks so seemingly that has gained more traction internally than the wastegate issue.

I doubt we ever know the extent of the problem. It has to be embarrassing for Toyota, especially after the extended roll out. If Toyota contacted affected owners, people would go online and post their notices, magnifying the problem.

Yes, but there are at least as many of us who won't buy one without knowing the extent of the problem or that there is a positive resolution.

I get it. I'm not buying one either.

I think Toyota fixes the new issues relatively quickly. It's too good of a company. By 2023, it'll all be ironed out. Like many said during the painful roll out, the first buyers will be the guinea pigs for the new engine and its issues. And that was the case. A little new buyer suffering, and then Toyota will fix it.

Ok fair enough, maybe they do know what the problem is, but don't have a way of knowing what vehicles were affected.
By that same logic, I might question how one could definitively say that how large or small the number of vehicles affected actually is.

Im watching this close as Im thinking about purchasing, test drove today as a matter of fact.

I think what we have to watch for is build date failures by month. We saw feb builds have failures, so now we are watching march.

I would think as soon as we make it a full month or two with no failures in that month we are good, most of them are crapping out right away so I think this should work.

thats what Im doing for now anyways. any march crap outs yet?

Can't argue with that. Have not seen any, not sure if any March builds are on any lots yet either though.

Just a reminder, people were saying same thing back in January about November/December builds and in February about January builds and now March about February builds.

Infotainment issues are an example of something to iron out by 2023. This isn't a new engine and it isn't any more than a defective batch of actuators so what is there to iron out here? This exact problem can happen in any subsequent year.

I'm sorry to rant - all this talk about the turbo issue being first year issues are so off base and getting old to hear.

If it is a defective batch of actuators, I bet Toyota does something about it and it doesn't become a reoccurring problem. If you're talking about longer term turbo reliability, I'll take my V8.

I could see this being true.

as far as long term, depends on what your talking, 100-150K I bet there wont be much difference. If your a guy who runs your stuff to 250K and beyond, ya regular V8 most likely.

Lay off him man! What the heck do you expect, a reliable powertrain that will go hundreds of miles between major service? Dream on buddy. If you don't like it, go buy a horse.

Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for mine to come in May and just pointing out that calling a defective part in an engine that isn't new, is not a first year problem. So many folks in here just bitch and complain about being left in the dust of the redesign and try to lump as many problems as possible in as a result of it.

A good horse has 15 hp. Costs more than a new Tundra. Maintenance every day. Shits on you, bites you, kicks you.
Won't last more than 25,000 miles.

    Was being a tad facetious.
Agreed 1,000%, this is not a first year problem, it's a priorities problem.
Wife bought the GX460 the first year it came out in 09. Flawless through 150K miles
Have a buddy coming up on 500K on his J100 LC that he's owned since new in 1998 (first year)
Day this gets put to bed, I'll pay up front and in cash.

You got a crystal ball? Lol
If it's a bad batch, why not just get rid of the batch in Jan and stop installing them in the Feb trucks?

Current ETA on the replacement turbo is 3/24 which is about 3 weeks from when I took it to the dealer with the issue. That ETA can of course change but we will see.

I picked up my Tundra last Friday and no issues to speak of other than infotainment is quirky. My sales rep, who seemed to know just about every detail of the Tundra (think he's even a member on this site) said he's convinced it's a software issue and Toyotas working on getting dealers up to speed. This does not mean some will not have turbo issues but as far as main wastegate issue it may indeed be a software/hardware communication fix. Not saying it is, but time will tell.
I know early on they were lifting cabs to work on the turbos. Do we know of anyone with a recent wastgate issue where the dealers still pulled cab? If not this may be insightful regarding how the issue is being addressed by Toyota.
