Its new down to every bolt. I think that Toyota with the new Tundra created a vehicle that appeals to a wider group of buyers.

Can you tell us what truck/suv/other vehicle you are coming from ?

    • Previous Gen Tundra
    • Toyota Tacoma
    • Full Size Pickup (Ford, Ram, GM, Titan)
    • Other Midsize Pickup Owner (Ranger/Ridgeline/Frontier)
    • SUV (4Runner)
    • Other

For the benefit of forum members please list the pros and cons.

Coming from a 2005 4Runner Sport V8 that I’ve owned since new. Still running like a top, wife is taking it over. To date the best car I’ve ever owned.

I grew up driving Fords and GMs in the 90s. Various issues with each but nothing major. My opinion the Fords had better interiors but lacked in the engine department compared to GM. GMs interiors were always very cheap and brittle. I also had several F150s in the 2000s. I bought a third GEN Tacoma in 2016 and really liked it. Some small issues with the whole transmission thing but mechanically that was about it. I did have the white paint issue with my Tacoma that Toyota just kind of brushed off. I always loved the tundras but I could never justify getting one with the MPG‘s compared to the other brands. If it wasn’t for two almost teenage kids and two dogs I would still be driving the Tacoma but I needed to get something with a larger interior. I started with the three-quarter ton route. I built a Ford F250 tremor and a GMC AT 4 both Similarly optioned both around 80k. I don’t tow a lot or at least anything large so it was hard to justify that kind of money with the diesel engine. I also felt as far as resale goes if you buy a three-quarter ton without a diesel engine you’re kind of shorting yourself. I then started the half ton route and the big three depending on options could be around 80 grand also. Then the new tundra was actually released and I finally got to see one. I took it for a test drive and now I currently own a 2022 tundra crew max off-road 6.5 bed. It checked all the boxes in the current market and the two biggest determining factor for me were it was another Toyota and it’s price. I know vehicle prices are high I paid MSRP for the tundra and in 2016 when I bought the Tacoma a little under MSRP. My biggest issue for doing the deal now and not waiting was the paint peeling on the Tacoma. Toyota didn’t want to address that and it had been an ongoing issue. With the amount of money I got for my Tacoma I figured if I waited out this current market I would either have to repaint a Tacoma to get a decent amount out of it or take a beating on a trade. I pulled the trigger haven’t looked back and have been pretty pleased with my purchase.

SR5 TRD OR or Limited TRD OR? Either way, I'm hard pressed to see how an equivalent domestic is $80k CAD, let alone $80k USD

Get on GM’s website and build a halfton Sierra AT4x and see where it is priced. Also with the options Toyota has I couldn’t touch a GM or Ford option the same way for the same price.

This is similarly optioney to the SR5 TRD off-road you can definitely go higher with higher trims and higher options and this is not the AT4x. This is $10,000 more than the Toyota

An AT4X is not comparable to an SR5.

Correct but I didn’t build the AT4x I built the AT 4 which is similar and doesn’t have a locking rear axle

I was all about the Hondas back in the 90's, 00's and 10's. I sold my 07 civic si cuz the wife thought the manual was too much when shifting. got a canyon because i wanted more space. after awhile it felt small and cheap inside. looked into the new Ridgeline but I figured it'll just be the same space wise. went in my buddies 2nd get tundra and loved the space and feel of it. been wanting a tundra ever since. went with the 3rd gen because it just made more sense financially due to getting one is much cheaper than an older model in this market. also very pleased with my decision

I can build a Silverado with a locking rear diff for under $55k USD.

Does it have everything the SR5 off-road does with every option available? I built my SR5 TRD off-road with every available option and it was 57,000

Also all I was saying is I built the half ton Ford and GM just like the tundra and they were all more money.

At home I currently have a 94 Camry and a 00 Tundra. I've had about every Toyota car/truck you can imagine since getting license some 30+ yrs ago and this 22 is by far my favorite thus far.

    Came from an '09 Tundra

    '09 > '22:

Double cab had plenty of space, so I got a 6.5 ft bed without an overly long truck. Went with a Crew Max this time as the new DCs just aren't big enough.

Tow hooks. Yes, I've needed to use them a few times.

A V8 sounds better. Doesn't necessarily mean it works better. But it sounds better. A lot better.

    '22 > '09:

    Everything not mentioned above.

We currently have a 22 Tundra and Highlander. We came from a 21 Silverado Custom and Highlander. I’ve had a Big Horn Ram 1500, Brass Monkey Durango, Tahoe, Excursion, Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee, Hyundai Sonata and Tuscan, Taurus, Explorer, Jeep Compass, Cobalt Sport, C1500 Silverado and a Pontiac Sunfire. Plus others and not necessarily in the order listed.

I’ve driven many others from junk to luxury. But comparing my Silverado Custom to my SR5 TRD OR. The Toyota rides much smoother and has way more power. The standard equipment of the Toyota is undeniably better. The Silverado got way better MPG. My Custom had the inline turbo 4 cylinder. I was willing to try something new and it was technically quicker than the 5.3, so why not. I wasn’t disappointed other than it sounded like a little guy in a big coat. The rear cab appeared to have more room in the Silverado, but I think it’s the aesthetics of the seat. The Tundras rear seat is longer and fits more leg if that makes any sense. My kids also say the back seat is way more comfortable and I agree, including the front seats. Tundra feels planted to the ground and ready to conquer vs the Silverado felt like an old school truck, which was fine by me. Toyotas should come with larger tires. Silverado comes standard with a skinny 33” (275/60r20) besides the Trail Boss that has a skinny 32”. Toyota should have a GM style rear bumper and bed lights should be standard. For 21, the Silverado came standard with the 12 volt plug inside and a 400w plug in the bed. That changed for 22 but should standard in all trucks. I think that’s all I can think of at this time. I’d talk about price but that’s not comparable since the market is retarded and drastically changed even the last year. I did pay MSRP for both trucks. The Custom was $36k and the SR5 was $48k (I think).

Came from an '07 Nissan Titan 4x4 Off-Road with lots of engine, audio and suspension mods (all by previous owner). That truck would just not die. Paid $17.5k for it with ~60,000 miles in 2012 so we definitely got our money's worth out of it. LOTS of adventures. Here are a few comparisons:

    Power:
I really like driving the new Tundra, even in ECO mode, but I am still getting use to it after only a few days of ownership. Surprisingly, I do not miss the tire-roasting initial acceleration of the Titan. It was fun, but now I feel MUCH more comfortable letting my wife and son drive the Tundra. Guess I am getting old (I see you coming at me, 50!). I have not yet tried towing. Getting more than 10 MPG is going to be pretty awesome!

    Ride:
I am not as impressed with Tundra's ride quality as I had hoped. (The Titan had Sway-A-Way (now AFE) Race Runner 2.5" gas shocks and had an amazing ride even on E-load tires). For the Tundra, on concrete sections of interstate, the whole truck almost vibrates. Very annoying. Will probably upgrade shocks to at least Bilsteins once available.

    Handling:
Handling is soft in cornering. The Titan was, again, modified and cornered like a beast. Tundra likely just needs some new tires and shocks (see previous). Not a lot of feedback on the steering compared to the old truck.

    Everything else:
The old Titan could not possibly hold a candle to the 15 years of advancements that have occurred since it was built. The Tundra interior is a massive upgrade. The kids love the giant dash screen and the wife loves the giant moonroof (probably soon to be destroyed when I load a canoe on the roof). Safety features are very welcome as a very-nearly-50-year-old Dad.

Why, why did Gulf States Toyota ship me a 4x4 truck with Bridgestone Dueler H/T highway tires???? I wouldn't even put them on my wife's SUV!

Minor grumbling, but overall I am pretty happy with the new Tundra. The '07 Titan was getting long in the tooth and I needed to upgrade, so I did. Time, different tires, and some different tires will tell. Did I mention different tires?

Thx for the voting to date.
The part of this poll that is the most surprising to me is that I thought the Tacoma number would be higher.
Everything else seems to be in line with my assumptions.

For those considering a Tundra coming from Tacoma's.

2022 Tundra Limited TRD off road Double Cab
My previous truck was a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport Access Cab MT. I traded for a 2022 Tundra Limited TRD OR Doublecab. Only have about 200 miles on it but so far I'm getting better gas milage in the Tundra than I did in the Tacoma.

Previous truck was an '18 CM Limited. Loved that truck, but couldn't pass up the chance to sell it for more than I paid for it and put the difference towards a brand new Tundra. Couldn't be happier with my decision, barring a few minor complaints.

Previous truck was an 07 Tacoma SR5 access cab 4x4. I loved the truck, but it was purchased when it was just me. With a family now, the additional space of the Crewmax tundra was the deciding factor between a tundra and a Tacoma or 4runner. The current gen Tacoma cab is just to small (especially with carseats) and there is plenty of space in the back of the tundra for two carseats and an additional person if necessary. The supposedly better gas mileage, better towing capability also factored in.

@Gene5253 hate to be a Debbie downer to ya sport, but I think this thread and the use of a poll probably answers your question better than the other thread.

Still currently in a 2019 Titan Platnum Reserve waiting for a 2022 Tundra Platnum. Some of the complaints about the Tundra are starting to make me leary.

That's the truck I traded in. Ironically, I went from the most trouble free vehicle I've ever owned to the one with the most problems. I do think the Tundra is a much nicer feel and ride, but damn Toyota has some serious QC problems now. Mine is in the shop for the second time, hopefully when these 6-7 issues are resolved, it'll be smooth sailing. For what it's worth, I like the Tundra enough I still have it, even dealing with all this crap LOL! Definitely running out of patience though.

What are some of your problems?
The funny thing is, I have been through 2 engine changes and 1 transmission change with the Titan. I hear what could be the knock again. The good news is the Nissan and my dealer handled this quite well. I am hoping with the Tundra I get good quality, better mpg and more tow capability than the Titan. I am worried about towing with the Titan with another potential engine knock issue to get to the 5th engine.

I'm transitioning from a 2013 Honda Civic LX. 102K miles with no issues. Loved the vehicle; however, I'm constantly surrounded by trucks on the road and I was beginning to develop a Nepolian Complex. This will be my first truck.

I skipped second Gen tundra. Sold my first Gen yesterday and my third Gen should be here in a couple weeks. Bad thing about it is I can't use the boat until it comes so hoping for no delays! Just driving my beater Camry Hybrid commuter until it comes.
