Well, 11 year old truck has its costs. Hope this one isn’t too bad

started truck, instantly heard two sets of power steering whine that was abnormally loud. When parked, it was near full lock.

Went to back out of the spot, power steering disappears over the course of like 3-5 seconds.

Drove 30 miles home, reservoir is full (so no leak) and no check engine light

    What’s the most likely problem?

Everything I said was wrong. My driveway is now covered in power steering fluid. The reservoir is empty and I think it’s a fitting

300 hectares on single tank of kerosene
It sounds like it affects "151 Power Steering Gear Assembly Replacement Parts". Directly from the notice. I believe you are correct.

Second page... "If you have owned your vehicle since August 5th, 2021 and HAVE NOT had your steering gear replaced since August 5th, 2021, there is no action required by you."

I wish I could say that was the case. Just got the call. Steering rack, dealer says $3,000 to do the job. Family mechanic says $3,200

Check in your area for a shop that rebuilds, rack and pinions, calipers, power steering pumps ETC. If you can find one see what their rebuild price is and if they have a shop to recommend.

I just read his thread on the steering rack issue. My parts quote isn’t bad, $500 or so. Seems fair.
The hours are what put the price so high.

the book shows 15hrs and pulling the engine. I spoke to the Tech and he said it was a super simple job and the only thing that needed to come out were the tie rods and a few other things directly related — not the engine and tranny.

I also read that post 2015, Toyota updated the book and made this a 5.75hr job. So that would be why the quote was so high, and the tech was saying it’s no biggie.

I don’t think I’m delusional in thinking the job will be done for far less than 3Gs. But if I am, correct me now

For anyone reading this in the future, total came out to 2650. I bet if I went to the family mechanic and told him to read the book for a 2016 truck It’d be less, but I didn’t know that til after I gave the go ahead. Dealer still came out under the estimate by 300 or so. All in all I still came out under all previous estimates of 3-3.2k

My 2010 rack went out back in 2017. Dealer charged about $3k. Insurance paid for mine though. I was at full lock and hit a curb pretty hard. The dealer dealt with the insurance company and helped me out.

I called them and told them I hit a curb when it broke. I think it was comprehensive or along the same lines as if it had been hail damage or I hit a deer or something.
