Gas is $3.79 here in NC and climbing! :( On a recent trip to FL, the gas pump clicked off at $75 in GA where I had to rescan my credit card and start the gas pump up a second time! First time this has happened to me since I owned the Tundra and I suspect this will become the new normal.

Except for 1 or 2 trips a year to/from FL, I use the Tundra for short local trips so it’s going to stick around. Have the wife’s hybrid if things get really ugly.

Have you you guys seen the “I did that!” Biden stickers on the gas pumps? Becoming more prevalent here.

Gas is fairly high here...but it's been this high before. Honestly, I drive to work maybe one or two days a week, and my drive is probably 25 miles round trip. Gas would have to get a LOT higher for it to seriously impact me.

If worse comes to worst I'll likely pick up a beater car to drive around. Not getting rid of my Tundra.

Nope. Not getting rid of my 10 mpg tundra on 37s till it dies. I love my truck. Our gas in pacifica, ca 15 minutes from sf on the coast is 5.49 for regular but all my vehicles use premium only at 5.79 a gallon as of right now. My 2013 gx460 on 35s is just as bad as the tundra now that’s it’s lifted. Both will never leave my hands until they die. Luckily I have a company van I drive for work everyday. The wife drives the tundra and GX as her daily only 10 miles to work. We haven’t paid less than $5 a gallon for a long while now. You get used to it unfortunately. Shit the last time I saw prices like some of you have was years ago. Honestly can’t even remember paying less than $4 a gallon.

i switched vehicles one time long ago because of fuel prices. That didn't end well. I traded a vehicle I liked to drive, to get one I hated, but it ran cheap.

Gas price then went back down, and I was still driving the dumb little car.. Life is too short to deal with that again.

To get me to switch vehicles from my Tundra over gas prices? Not likely it ever gets high enough. $7.00 a gallon would suck, but it wouldn't even be close to time to get rid of the Tundra.

I currently have logged over 110k miles on my 2018 that I bought new. so gas price is a thing... Just not in comparison to driving something that I don't enjoy.

I drive 50 miles each way 5 days a week. I've had a civic as a computer car for years. I use my tundra 1 or 2 days a week and on weekends.

    3.99 here in Maine.
Tundra is paid off and I commute in my work truck (Ginger has been parked since Nov) so itd have to be double digits for me to balk at it. Even then Id just get another motorcycle or something. Whatever. Dont wanna be the richest person in the cemetery anyways.

In all seriousness though what gas prices are more likely to affect is my next tire purchase. I was about to go from 33 grabber atx to 35x12.50 patagonia mt, i might rethink and hold off that decision if it keeps climbing the way it is.

I don’t drive my Tundras daily right now because I have an assigned work vehicle, so I can keep paying ridiculous SoCal fuel prices. But. If the world’s increasing geopolitical drama cuts regular supply so I can’t get gas when want/need it, that will suck. I don’t have a lower mileage vehicle to use away from work. And with the pandemic related changes in supply and price of used cars, it’s not easy to pick one up in anticipation of such difficulty.

For the past 15 years, I've always driven a large vehicle with poor MPG. I kind of look at the price of gas as my "safety tax" that I pay for having a larger vehicle that should be safer in the event of an accident.

And I am sure folks would think I'm nuts, but if gas gets too high, and folks start dumping big vehicles for economic ones, I'd probably pick up something else just to have a replacement for one of my older cars.

No price will make me switch vehicles. But I'm lucky to live 1.25 miles from work, so I usually ride this...

News just said SF went over $5/gal.

Wife agreed to that I should get a beater/ non-beater for better MPG and list the Tundra under insurance as "recreational vehicle"
Guess that works..... problem is, what should I get?

Whatever you get needs to be justifiable to offset the fuel savings.

The Bay Area has been paying that for while now. Nothing new for us. I would love to pay some of the prices some of you posted. There would be no issue whatsoever If we were anywhere close to the national average. You guys are lucky to pay anywhere close to the average.

I was at Costco this past weekend and was shocked to find $2.959/gal, and yes, I was from NY then SF then Houston, so I feel lucky that we are still on the low end....

Interesting to see fuel costs and how they differ across North America.

I really need to bookmark some of my longer mathematical posts. Since I haven’t, here goes the short short version……

Selling a truck for the sole purpose of fuel costs is not worth it in the end. I’m just going to pretend everyone has the title to their vehicles (but If you don’t…ad that up as well).

In all these pages with buying a commuter car cost I see a huge piece missing and that is replacement/upkeep of current truck. Key points:

-Truck cost is soaring and has been for quite some time. I hear this all the time with the 3rd Gen tundra cost. 45k vs 65k+ in just a few years. Call it 20,000.00. In some truck markets it will be more. Since we are talking tundras we will keep it in this segment. How long can you keep a vehicle with reliability on the mind? 150/200/250k miles? How long does it take to get that mileage benchmark? Could you have gone 10-15 years on your truck instead of 5-8?

    - Maintenance cost on Truck vs Commuter car. Unless the commuter car is an exotic or high end vehicle it will almost always cost more to DD a truck.

I have 74500 miles on my 2016 truck. This year in Nov 5th it will be 6 years old and by then most likely pushing 90k miles. I have driven my commuter car 81k miles in the same period of time and by the fall it will most likely be close to 100k miles. Had I not purchased a commuter my truck would have almost 200k miles in 6 years. For me, 200-250k is the mileage benchmark for keeping a vehicle before large maintenance items come into play (transmission…etc). So it looks like I would fall into the 6-8 year mark for truck replacement. I can’t remember what a limited 2015 Tundra cost, but probably around 40k (I did an old price calculator with options). Today a Limited Tundra is 60k and then for my area add up another 4K for plates/registration on a new vehicle.

Keep that in mind when doing commuter car ownership breakdowns. Replacing a 200k+ mile truck every 6-8 years gets costly too. Even more so if you have any large mechanical replacement costs.

I love how not one person has chimed in with the " if youre worried about mpg buy a prius" and "i didnt buy a tundra to worry about mpg , MURICA!" post yet lmao funny how they arent around now when it goes up really fast all at once instead of little by little. 2020 MGM Tundra Crewmax
I did that once back in '08. Worst mistake I ever made. Sell the gas guzzler (that I liked) low - because nobody wanted them - and buy the fuel sipper high. Hated that car and missed the Jeep I traded for it. I like both my Tundra and 4R better than I did that Jeep. Never again.

On the plus side, high gas prices make for better road trips - less traffic and tourists everywhere you go!
