Does anybody exceed payload when towing?

Doing payload calculations, does anybody exceed payload when towing?

 

Should you? No
Do people? Yes. By a lot sometimes

 

With all the questions about payload on this forum, I am surprised nobody has upgraded our axles to something domestic trucks use that have significantly higher capacities.

 

There will always be a weak point. If you did that, your frame could bend. Or something else would break.

 

I bought White Knuckle sliders, but then I started doing math.
1320 (sticker) - 62 (spray-in liner) - 300 (me+wife) - 100 (kids combined) - 60 (bed rack) - 160 (sliders) - 150 (two kayaks) and I'm left with less than 500 for a trailer tongue weight.

I'm thinking of ditching the sliders, but that still puts me up against the line at 650 with a trailer (to be determined). The kids will eventually grow too.

 

And admit to it on an internet forum filled with payload police?

 

Anything you add to your truck only decreases the payload. The GVWR is based on a number of factors so there isn't one thing you can replace to magically increase it.

I did yank the rear seats. Green sticker inside the door shows to subtract -114.5 pounds.

 

maybe we should sue toyota for that video towing the space shuttle.

 

I think a better question might be, what percentage of people with trucks ever check their payload stickers? I know a bunch of folks who have used trucks their whole life. If it fit, and if they could get it to roll, that was enough.

 

My FIL just assumed the payload on his F150 is 1000 lbs because it's a "halfton".

You think we are bad. Hang out at the local airport sometime as see the real crazies. I once watched a pilot ask the line boy to hold up the tail of his Piper Lance to keep it from hitting the ground until the pilot and copilot seats were occupied.

 

Id be more surprised how many tundras pulling travel trailers are under payload…

 

A full float would be nice!

 

Debated starting a new thread for this question, but we all know how many payload threads there already are, so I'm gonna ask it here...

We all know a lot of people exceed the payload of our Tundras...especially if towing.

My question is...

What do you all consider to be the ranges when considering what is excessive?

For example...

Probably no big deal ... 0 to 150 pounds over

A bit risky ............... 150 to 300 pounds over

Etc...

Not really looking to reignite the "over payload" debate.

I believe in the numbers, would like to be under (by a lot), and when I can afford a new tow vehicle I assure you payload will not even be something I need to consider as I will buy something that will far exceed my needs.

I already know where i'm at...My truck, IF the published tongue weight for my trailer is accurate, will be at right at payload with me and my wife in it.

We will also have a couple dogs, so thats another 120 pounds.

Maybe another 100 pounds of crap in the bed, plus or minus...putting me at a minimum of 220 pounds over.

At some point when I am able, I will get a 3/4 or 1 ton truck, but I cant do that yet, and in the mean time, my Tundra will have to do the job.

Yes, we will forgo taking kayaks etc until we get a more adequate tow vehicle.

But until that happens, I'm gonna have to work with what I've got.

Not planning on any trips out west into the mountains or anything like that btw...

My truck weighed in at 6800 without me in it with my ARE cap and decked drawers with stuff in them. When I pick up pellets, I do 1/2 ton at a time (25 bags at 40lbs each). I feel it back there but its not an uncomfortable feeling. If I add any more, like once I tried 30 bags so 1200lbs, and it make a difference. I drive about 15 miles on back roads at 55mph and they are also all within the ARE cap, so center of gravity is low.

To sum it up, to me it doesn’t feel that bad up to 8k, but I wouldn’t anything over. If center of gravity was higher, like a truck bed camper, I wouldn’t go that high. Theres a YouTube channel where the have a 4 wheel camper and say they regularly drive around at over 9k.

 

I'm always 2-300 lbs over when towing. Truck drives and handles good though.

I go a little over PL. Hey, if I start 100 lbs over, then 150 miles later I'm back down to PL as long as I don't fuel up!

 

There are quite a few of us on this forum that have traded in their Tundra for a heavy duty.

I finally accepted the fact that in spite of being the best built truck in the U.S., it simply wasnt capable of doing what I needed it to do.

One of these days I'll get back into one.

 

If you have four people in your truck and one is holding in a fart, you are probably over GVWR.

I tow a pin-heavy travel trailer that puts me a few hundred lbs over GVWR when I’m loaded with the family for a long weekend. I don’t stress about it because I’m still well under each individual axle rating and GCWR.

 

You probably already know but the published tounge weight is dry weight. To estimate real world use GVWR of the trailer you want times 11-12%.

 

Probably. Lol i just hook it up and if it feels stable and doesnt look like im doi g something stupid , i run it.

 

Too much math. A) does it look sketchy B) Does it feel scketchy C) when you drive does it make weird noises it doesnt do before. If no to all 3 questions you are all good lol

 

Mostly I'm trying to figure out if I shouldn't worry about it and install my sliders, or ditch them for a partial loss if not full loss. Another option I guess would be to not install the rear two bolts for ease of removal.

 

Im getting sliders and just got my skidplate. I tow. Not concerned.

I think most truck manufacturers know this and i have always contended the limits are severly underated because they know this. Im sure all the people reading stickers read the instructions from ikea too
Tbh though i do what i feel is safe, and if stickers and following someone elses instructions makes them feel better , more power to them. Do whatever makes you comfortable
