Hello everyone. I have a 2014 Tundra with a 26 gal tank. I just bought a travel trailer and could use the extra fuel capacity. Called Toyota and asked about swapping out for the 38 gal tanks that are on the new Tundra. Toyota will sell the tank but won't install it for me. I called two different dealers and the answer was the same. I'm not mechanical enough to take on such a challenge. Does anyone know who might do the install if I buy the tank. I am in So. Cal. Thanks

Called a couple of local mechanics who have done work for me. They won't do it. I looked into the aftermarket Tranferflow has a 46 gal that I was interested in but found out they won't sell the tank to anyone in California. The company is in Chico Ca. Ha ha ..I need to call them and find out the reason. I have a short bed and worry a transfer tank in the bed may take up too much room. Thank you for your responses.

Did the dealerships give a reason for why they wouldn't install?

I'm not sure why a local mechanic shop wouldn't do it for you. The dealer I could understand because of liability issues with it not being "standard equipment for that truck and changing payloads, GWVR, etc.

Also FWIW, the 38 gallon tank is a 2.5 gen tank. I'm getting 3rd gen with the "larger fuel tank" and it's 32.2 gallons.

Edit: nevermind the last comment I just read you got a 2014, which is a 2.5 gen my bad

They told me the tank was bigger, duh, and the brackets wouldn't line up. Some modifications would have to be done and they don't do modifications. If it doesn't bolt straight in they won't do it.

I would have thought all the holes for the brackets would be there, but it seems the 38 gal. tank wasn't an option until 16. Good luck, I'm sure you can find someone to do the swap, doesn't seem like it would be that big of a job.

38 gallon tank is really just a few gallons more than 26. I would go aftermarket and drive to Vegas for the weekend and find someone to install it. I spent a lot of time finding a truck with the larger tank and unless you run it way past the low fuel warning, it doesn’t take anywhere near 38 gallons.

it’s not the tank’s fault the DTE calc is poorly designed (not dynamic) or the low fuel light was programmed to come on with 5-7 gallons remaining. An owner in another thread intentionally ran out of gas to confirm it is in fact 38 gallons. The low fuel light is generous with its warning because if you’re towing heavy getting 9mpg you’d rather get an alert and have about 50 miles range rather than 20.

my past 2 trucks were 26 gallon. This tank is night and day difference with the range.

if the OP is going to keep the truck a long time this is a worthwhile upgrade.

Thank you all for the advice. That was another question I had about whether or not my fuel gauges, approx miles to empty gauge etc. Would work and be accurate with a larger tank since the truck and computer system were designed for the 26 gal tank. Even if I go with the aftermarket tank or in bed transfer tank would the trucks system be able to read and calculate gas quantity, efficiency and miles to empty, based on the higher capacity. Am I asking that right?

No it won’t. I think the max miles it has reported was no where near what it holds and when ur empty it has around 8-11 gallons left

Just curious, what range is displayed when you fill up your tank? My buddy wants me to upgrade his tank.

Another option, a cargo carrier or jerry can hangers on the back of the trailer. You could go as far as a transfer tank on the trailer with a simple inline electric 12v fuel pump and a quick disconnect hose. Even a gravity flow tank and transfer can. Not the best option, but it is far better than walking.

When I've filled up at the DTE zero mark, it was 28-29 gallons. Tripmeter read 400-415 miles on average. That's roughly 13.75-14.5 MPGs. I have a 38 gallon tank and have yet to run it all the way to empty.
