Question: What size is the bolt to help remove rotors when seized?

You guys cut a lot of rotors where you are? Hammers first choice. But I avoid hammer if they want the rotors cut

 

In our area if the rotors are rusted on so bad they are not worth saving so my special rotor removal tool (BFG) is applied. If they are worth saving and are stuck on then a couple of 8mm bolts and light hammer taps on the hat edge and they come off.

 

We get a ton of rusty ones. But a fair few where cutting is doable. I think we’re the only ones still cutting rotors here

 

We don't cut rotors. The reason is that by the time you add the machining cost to cut the rotors you might as well go buy new ones. Also sometimes after you cut them and measure they are below spec so you end up wasting machine time your never getting back. There is also the argument that removing material will make them more likely they will warp because there is less material to dissipate the heat. Also if new ones are installed they are warrantied against warping.

 

Oh yea. I know all about that wonderful stuff. I deal with all the come backs from the co workers botched brake jobs.

 

I returned the truck to carmax for a refund. Cluster was over 2 months out. Couldn’t drive it due to odometer being programmed for new cluster. Sorry to say no conclusions on this one.

 

I have typical bed rust in the 4 corners in a 2012 CM and came across Truck Bed Floor (653110C060) and was wondering if this is actually the metal floor that you buy and have welded into the bed ? Is this a fix dealerships do as opposed to replacing whole bed for $5k+.

 

Our dealership didn't have a body shop. You should be able to find a used take off bed and paint it to match the truck. To weld in a complete floor would be very time consuming and expensive. Another option, if there is not structural problem with the bed, treat the rusted areas to prevent further rusting and through in a plastic bed liner.

I had a Toyota remote start put on my 4runner. Can it be programmed to not shut off the engine when you unlock the doors?

 

No sir.

 

If it's key start instead of pushbutton an aftermarket remote start can do that, but not pushbutton start.

Heard this when pulling out of the driveway this morning, so I jacked it up.
This is running at idle.
It gets louder under acceleration but the noise stops when coasting.

Does the oil have any shinny particles in it? You going to have to pull the pumpkin and have a peek and I think all will be revealed.

 

What brand of fluid is the best for the front and rear differentials? Also the transfer case?

 

The official answer is Toyota brand fluids. The real answer is any fluid you think the best is as long as it meets Toyota specifications. Check you owner's manual for the proper fluid type. The more important aspect about fluids is making sure you service on time.

Sorry but it's hard to give an opinion on what fluid is "best". Kind of like giving an opinion on what popsicle tastes better.

Does anybody know all the parts that I need to fix the secondary air injection issue for code p2442? I cannot use the bypass kit since my state requires emissions testing. 2009 5.7L.

 

Have you checked with the parts department at the dealership? Are you planning on doing the work yourself?

I have a 2019 Gauge cluster and it's harness. The TIS diagram I paid for and downloaded from Toyota is different than the harness.
Can a mechanic with access to Toyota data look up the position and color of the wires please?

Sorry but I lost that privilage when I left the dealership. Hopefully someone can chime in with a WD and connector diagrams.

 

Not yet. I wish I could fix it myself instead of paying an arm and a leg. I was planning to buy the parts and have them installed by the dealer to see if the price can be knocked down. Paying for it is not an issue, I just don’t like the idea of dishing out a lot of money on a reoccurring issue. I really wish Toyota would make a recall. A warranty is not enough especially since most of us is already out of it. It disgruntles me that most of us Tundra owners have to pay for a design flaw. I really love my truck.

 

You don't have to go to the dealer to have it done. Any competent tech can handle it. It's not too bad of a job. Get some quotes from the dealer and others on paper. Don't mention you might want to buy the parts yourself. See what the quotes are with part and labor then compare. Some dealers will up the labor to make up for the lost revenue from not selling the parts

 

Ok, in the meantime, does driving with a air valve stuck open cause any harm? I’ve reset the light to get it out of limp mode and it took a few days for it to come back on again. The lights came on shortly after starting the truck and just thankful it didn’t come on while I was in the middle of driving. There’s actually 4 Toyota dealers within 100 miles of where I live and one of them quoted $2200 to fix, but they haven’t exactly pinpointed the issue if the pump, air switching valve or some other component is bad. I’m also noticing a little more tailpipe emissions (fuel-like smell) and not sure if this is related.

 

No harm in driving it, it's just a pain when it goes into limp. All the system does is blow fresh air into the exhaust system to dilute the outgoing exhaust so the truck can meet emissions requirement. When the repair is done both the switching valves and both air pumps are done regardless of what component failed. Dealers want to make sure that the system does have problems latter and because you have to pull the intake manifold everything is replaced to avoid a possible come back.
