TFL has been working the loaner Rivian R1T hard towing and offroading. There's some likeable things. No oil changes, no diff fluid changes, no trans fluid changes. Theoretically the machine is maintenance free until you have electrical issues. They did the Ike Gauntlet and had to recharge at a Walmart to make it home, that was funny to watch. I don't know what we'll be buying five years from now.

If you tow over 5k for long distances then an EV is not in the cards at least in this time period. ICE will still be for my trucks.

Well this morning as I was driving my 2022 Platinum I got the dreaded Check Engine Light visit dealer along with parking brake system malfunction at just over 250 miles. Truck was built in Nov. It never did say reduced engine power and I personally didn't notice anything different. Taking it to Toyota tomorrow morning. When I called them and they pulled up the VIN they said oh yeah the system captured it throwing two codes although he couldn't tell me what the codes were or what they said. All he said it was it captured some data. This happened either right as I stopped at a stop light or when I was about to leave there. Hope for the best!

On a side note why are these two codes related? Seems like everyone gets both of these codes at the same time.

Interesting. That would be nice. So it sounds like it might be something with the parking support system perhaps. Will know for sure tomorrow once I drop off the truck at Toyota in the morning. Will update everyone here on any updates.

Not so fast. PHEVs aren't that ready for prime time in the colder climates yet either. There's a forum dedicated to the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, a PHEV introduced for 2021. Lots of people there are having major issues because the engine doesn't run long enough to get hot enough to burn off the fuel that gets past the cold piston rings making the oil level go up by being diluted with gasoline. The truck has a mode that keeps track and forces the engine on full time. That should last a few minutes or maybe a half hour or so but some people have been stuck in that mode for days and even weeks! There's a small moron mafia on the forum that tries to defend it by attacking anyone who complains but of course that won't fix the issue.

Friend of mine got one those Wrangler 4xe plugin hybrid. What a pile. I wouldn’t say that all PHEVs aren’t ready, just Chrysler’s aren’t.

The DTC could be for anything. Typically Toyotas will disable the safety sense which is why everyone gets the “parking support brake malfunction” or “pre-collision system malfunction” or other messages when there’s a MIL.

True but even in these tight supply times you can get thousands off any of those but we're being conditioned to believe MSRP is the best deal where Toyota is concerned.

it is when you compare it to what you get over a platinum or 1794. at 73k starting price before you even add any pkg/options.

thats pushing almost 11k over a platinum non hybrid before adding any pkg/options and that only 4 things you can get as standard over the 1794/Plat.

i can add the Advanced Pkg and Power boards with a hybrid 4x4 5.5ft platinum and no options for 68k compared to the starting price of a capstone with those exact same features as standard (STD) for 5k less.

    capstone :

mandatory hybrid engine (just like the trd pro)
    Semi-aniline leather-trimmed seats
Dark American walnut wood-grain interior trim with backlit "CAPSTONE" instrument panel badge and metal speaker grilles
    Capstone floor mats
22-in. dark chrome and machined-finish alloy wheels
    Chrome single exhaust tip
Dark chrome-accented mesh grille with color-keyed surround
Chrome "CAPSTONE" door badge and garnish, door handles, window molding and mirror caps; color-keyed tailgate spoiler and overfenders
    "i-FORCE MAX" hood badge
Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) system with integrated regenerative braking

    ---------------------------------------------------

Stop and Start Engine System (S&S) (THIS IS NOT AVAILABLE ON THE CAPSTONE)

    ---------------------------------------------------

    HUD (STD) (option on 1794/Plat)
Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system (STD) (option on 1794/Plat)
Power running boards and BedStep (STD) (option on 1794/Plat)
Load-leveling Rear Height Control Air Suspension (STD) (option on 1794/Plat)

I just got word that the ETA on mine is March 20-25, but I'm not holding my breath as everything is getting delayed. Time to figure out which hard tonneau cover to get that's somewhat available.

I just visited the builder on Toyota.com. I made a 1794 hybrid longbed 4x4 with the advanced package and a couple of small bed options (hooks, mat) and it came to just over $70k. I could be interested once getting 10% or more off of that price returns. Of course it never will if everyone keeps greasing up and bending over. :D

Well just got the call from the dealer. Said it was a wastegate issue on the bank 1 turbo. Parts ordered, no ETA yet, getting setup with a loaner later today.

I don't know of GM dealers selling for under sticker, but with Ford there are select dealers around the country that will. Ram is in a similar bucket as Ford, it's rare, but they exist.

Still can't build an iForce max, TRD Pro, or Capstone on Toyota's website for my Florida zip code. So I popped in a California zip and viola.... everything was there. Come on man, why is Florida always late to the party?? I priced out a 1794 with iForce Max and 4x4,CM, 6.5, Advanced pkg with running boards, etc., and a tonneau cover. Everything except tax and tag was $70,550. I am down with that action!!

It's tough to compare because Ford and Ram had their redesigns pre-Covid/supply chain madness, and each are now 2-3 model years beyond that. Toyota and GMC are both trying to do massive redesigns during the craziness going on, and it's going to result in nothing below MSRP for a while.

I for one hope the days of discounts return, but so long as we have a government administration that wants to pump trillions of dollars into citizens pockets for very little reason, it's not going to happen (not getting political, just more so explaining economically why this is happening -- hope you enjoyed those stimmy checks last year because now you're paying for it)

The builder is wonky. If I use my FL zip you can't pick hybrid. If I use San Antonio zip you can ONLY pick hybrid, but you can't pick any packages. If I use 90210 you can pick anything (I'm looking at limited). Hopefully they'll iron that out.

I get that there are no custom orders, but that's pretty annoying functionality. Let me build the truck I want regardless of zip so I can see the options. If it's not available in my area let me know where I can get it.

    A bunch
Ram will usually give you a reasonable discount PLUS crazy trade in value. Site unseen Ram was giving 50% more for my wife's old Tucson and the Ram 1500 Classic was $5-10k listed lower than comparable trims, and they gave us the list price. Compared to a Tundra I saved roughly $15k with trade and price difference.

Now all we need to see on the site is the lift kit. Kind of curious what they are going to charge. Looking at a 1794 in Army Green with the TRD package.

Ideal new truck, but too expensive to dump my 2018 and the V8. New Sequoia comes out in July and will probably be similarly priced. If they cost the same, the Sequoia would work better for us.

I spent under $40k for my 2018. With these prices, next truck will be my wife's. I'm hoping she chooses the 2023 4Runner Pro hybrid, but I think she'll go back to an Audi.
