285/70/R17 wheel ?

If I want to move up to this size on my 2005 DC 4X4 what width wheels can I use without modification? My factory ones are in poor condition and I want to upgrade but do I have to stick with 7.5"width or will going up or down 1/2" still work with these tires?

Is your truck lifted in the front 3"?

 

I wouldn't go any narrower than 7.5" with 285's. Most aftermarket wheels will be in the 8-9" range with 8.5" being pretty common. Any tires you are looking at online should tell you the recommended rim width range. Methods that fit our trucks for example:
