I am thinking of trying to strip the chrome from my hood bulge before painting or coating it. Has anyone done this successfully and easily?

One thing I found said soaking it is Super Clean works and another said Easy Off oven cleaner.

Change the thread title to “How to f*ck up your $40k truck”

Also, the search bar is a good first step instead of opening a new thread every time you have a question.

Agree. Just buy the paint match. Buy once, cry once.

If you want to do it cheap, easy and reversible use plastidip. It wont look as good as paint matched but better than chrome.

Those oven cleaners and solvents aren’t strong enough to strip exterior chrome. It also may warp the thin parts of the bulge.

It’s just plastic with a shiny chrome looking coating. You’re better off just scuffing it up and painting it professionally or just do it right and buy factory painted pieces.

f##k up your truck by painting something you are suggesting taking off and replacing anyway. It couldn't hurt I am happy with mine still, maybe if the paint falls off some day I will change it

I'm just speaking from my own experience - I painted over the chrome, doing as much prep as I could, but it still ended up chipping off from rock and bug hits pretty quickly. Spending the money on OEM painted pieces is the only way to go, IMO. There was a local shop that was pushing that they could color match chrome parts for a couple of years, and they recently stopped because the finish wasn't holding up.

That looks really good. What part of the country are you in? Rock hits on the highway are a common occurrence here in AZ, so that might make a difference.

It could happen that some day I want to get color matched parts but it is buying me some time anyway while I spent a fortune on other stuff

This looks like a good solution to de-crhome the interior pieces around vents and knobs.

$10 a can. no prep. think i did 5 coats. however, if a chip is going to send you into cardiac arrest and/or keep you up at night, maybe shell out the coin for color-matched parts or overlays. for what it's worth, where i'm at, gravel is spread on the roads (not salt or mag chloride). my grille has taken plenty of hits (already, i only did this a wk ago) and the plasti dip has held up. if it gets bad, i'll peel it off and paint it again.

PlastiDip definitely stands up to rocks better than paint. I had actually PD'd my grille and bulge and was pretty happy with it, until the dealership put something on it that discolored it. That's when I moved to painting it, and then to replacing it.

I swapped mine out (grille and hood bulge) with OE parts. Cost me a total of $250……after selling off the parts I didn’t want.
