Brand new, 2 questions 2022 tundra. (4wd and “comfort+”)

Hi guys. Brand new. Hoping to replace my 2012 frontier with a “big boy” truck.
Managed to find a 2022 tundra to sit in. Had some questions the sales guy couldn’t answer and I somewhat found some answers here, BUT they pertain to 2021 and older. Not sure how much has changed.

1. How does basic Toyota 4wd work? (Not offroad stuff I.e crawl, multi, etc). My Nissan is open front and back diff, transfer,case. But the axles have ABLS which is active braking (abs in reverse) to mimic lsd.

Toyota atrac seems the same? Does the new tundra have this?

2. Multi,surface…. 4wlo only?

3. Comfort+ is available on all trims except trd offroad. Why? Sales guy didn’t know.

I’m not an off-roader. I just need a truck that will get me through lots of snow (roads) and I really like the idea of an integrated block heater, trickle charge, and interior warmer.

offroad trim deletes the comfort but I gain the multi surface (assuming I can use it in 4whi)

can I assume that any 4wd posts also pertain to the newest tundra generation? Or did they significantly change anything?

Tundra diffs are open unless you get the TRD Off-road package which has a rear locker optional. Only the 2WD truck has an “Auto LSD” function, but it’s basically traction control so 4WD trucks technically have it. But no ATRAC, the traction control system fills in for this function. Only TRD Off-road has the multi-terrain select and crawl control. You can use it in 4Hi and 4Lo but not all the modes. Lastly, Comfort mode (and Sports+, maybe you’re mixing the two together) are only available in vehicles with the adaptive variable suspension which cannot be paired with TRD off-road package.

 

So the platinum has ALsd again, no locker right?

 

so if I buy an sr5 tundra 4 x 4 it’s actually a 2 wheel drive truck? What happens when the tires slip?

when I say “comfort” I. Referring to the comfort accessory block heater, trickle charger and cabin warmer, NOT drive system or suspension.

sales guy said it can’t be installed in the offroad package. Didn’t make any sense to me.

Oh, the comfort+ package you mention is a Canadian thing. I have no idea why it’s packaged the way it is.

Toyota website says all vehicles have Auto LSD (brake grabs wheel without traction so that wheel with traction can output torque). But the manual says only 4x2 trucks have Auto LSD.

Tundras are part time 4WD. You have to select it… if the wheels slip, traction control intervenes and applies brakes/reduces engine power. It works fairly quickly and does an ok job.

 

One thing you will notice from your old Frontier is that the 4WD on Tundra will take longer to engage and may require you to move the truck slightly. Your old Frontier doesn't use a actuator in the front differential so engagement is very quick. The Tundra uses and actuator so it will take a little more time to engage and can be finicky at times.

 

Yeah, sometimes you also have to be on level ground before switching 4W modes. That's why you want to select it before you need it. The manual tells you to enable it once a month to keep the actuators and BorgWarner chain in the transfer case from seizing up.
Tundras with or without multi-terrain select have ABS traction control permanently whether in 2WD or 4WD. The selector just changes how it behaves. 4lo has less aggressive traction control and was almost completely disabled in prior gen models(despite the icon being orange).

I’m trying to understand why the comfort stuff isn’t available in the trd offroad. Makes no sense.

What does my frontier have, if not an actuator?

 

The Frontier just doesn't use an actuator. There is no axle disconnect used. Basically like the rear axle but on the front. Toyota uses a disconnect to try to obtain better mpg but the gain is minimal. The issue with the Toyota is that both the actuator in the transfer case and front diff have to lock before you have 4WD. With colder weather the front actuator can be troublesome to slide the collar in position to connect the axles or if the collar isn't quite lined up on the splines you may have to move the truck a touch for it for fall into place.

 

Comfort adjusts the airbag pressure in the rear, which TRD packages don't have.

so if your driving while shifting into 4x it’s not an issue? If I’m at a dead stop and decide I need to go into 4x do I switch into 4x and it will do so as I drive?

 

Switch to 4H on the go is not a problem for either vehicle. Switching to 4LO on either vehicle required that the vehicle be stoped.

 

And in neutral. It works better for me to fully engage 4hi first. When I owned Fords they would engage 4lo in park but with the Toyota I put it in neutral.

 

I do the same. In neutral 4LO seems to engage easier.

 

yes, I understand that. I was asking in the context that Toyota sometimes “has to move a little” to get into 4x. If I’m driving then it’s not an issue. I’ll be “moving” as I’m driving. If that makes sense?

 

Put it into 4hi anytime you want. Preferably not while sliding backwards down a slick road.. just understand if your not moving and it doesn’t click in that’s normal. It will once you move a little, eventually.

 

Thus the reason you shouldn't build a vehicle, particulary one that has an off-road package, that lacks front end recovery points...

 

Yup. Driving in 2WD and get stuck then switch to 4WD and the front actuator can't engage the front diff. Well I'll just give it a tug from the front with my buddies truck. Nope.

 

And one should be open so you can put the loop of your strap on it without using additional hardware.

 

I think it’s mostly a matter of getting teeth or splines in the mechanism synchronized enough for everything to engage. Sometimes it slips right in, sometimes you need to roll forward or back 6 inches, and sometimes you need to straighten out and move a bit so any imbalances in load or shaft rotation can equalize

 

I believe you need to be in 4Lo to engage the factory rear locker.

That is how my Tacoma worked. I hated the fact that it had to be in 4lo.

 

Toyota does that for safety reasons. They want to make sure the locker is only at low speeds.

 

If your on a back road and didn’t have the forethought to put it in 4hi before hand then maybe damaging your front bumper by pulling from a control arm is probably the least of your worries. My point is it’s pretty hard on your cv axels to do so.
