Thoughts on trading my Tacoma for this 2007 Tundra?

I was originally wanting to buy a 3rd gen tundra and realized the price was just too high so I started looking at the 2007-2013 tundra's and have been finding some decent trucks, but I'm just not sure if trading my truck in straight across for this tundra is "fair" ?

It's a 2007 Crewmax tundra with 101k miles. The service records aren't great, but there are some oil changes and other servicing here and there. It's a 2 owner truck, but the first owner had it for about 80k of the miles. It is a California based truck so there isn't any rust, but there is sun damage which is causing some peeling on the roof and a little fading near the bed. The interior is in really solid condition and is all leather. Didn't see any noticeable stains or interior damage, exterior didn't have any serious damage either. The mirrors are powered mirrors and did have a weird wobble to them while driving and you could just shake them a little yourself.

After talking to the salesman he looked at my Tacoma and I told him I would be interested in trading it in. He asked what I wanted and I said " at least the value of this tundra" meaning $26k at the least. Apparently he took pictures and called the owner and they said they would do it, but I'm just unsure if that's really a fair value... My tacoma is in pretty pristine condition, has a brand new suspension, brand new tires, brand new wheels, and a fully aftermarket sound system. It only has 55k miles and is the off-road package. It's just hard for me to justify trading across a 'complete' Tacoma for a 6 year older stock Tundra with 45k more miles. Granted it is a bigger and more comfortable truck with a v8. I was also concerned with what MX I would have to do at 100k miles because I don't think they've done anything.

I know it's ultimately my decision, but I'm just curious if people think I'm getting a fair value here and/or should I be looking at the 2007 year? Or should I look to get something closer to 2012/2013? One thing to factor is that if I sold my truck privately and bought something like this for $26k I would have to pay 1560 in taxes so we're talking about needing to sell my truck for at least $27500 which I think I could probably get $27k-$28k so it's not too far off.

That's a limited trim truck and pretty clean. For what you're wanting to do (assuming your Taco is paid for), you could aim a little higher ($30k?) and bring a small loan or cash to the table to help motivate a dealer. If you really want a Tundra and you don't want to pay anything out of pocket, what you're proposing isn't that unreasonable. The slight difference in values will help pay for the time and paperwork that the dealership will have into the trade.

 

Good to know I'm not absolutely crazy here, I just am having a hard time going from a 'complete' truck to a tundra for a straight across trade. I am also worried about the truck being 7 years older and am not sure if there is any maintenance involved at 100k miles. Is there any reason to wait out for 2012/2013? My understanding is that they are pretty much the same truck with maybe some newer interior creature comforts? Based off trade in KBB I wonder If I should ask for $2k on top of trading across? My Tacoma is paid off and my thought was to go to something else for $0 in or them paying me a couple thousand that I can use towards some mods. Trying to get a similar 2014/2015 seems to be about $7k-$10k more and doesn't seem worth it to me. Most dealerships will only give me $23k-$24k on a trade anyhow. So I would be another $10k out of pocket.

Could be present and prior owner just had the engine light re-set...
only to emerge again under your ownership.

The dealership still needs to be able to make a profit on your taco. Therefore you will not be offered top dollar.

You may have more luck getting an even trade privately. Obviously requires a lot more of your time.

I totally understand they need to make money, and the trade across seems fair considering it's with a dealership. I just was not sure if other people thought it was reasonable. KBB says about $2k difference in trade in value and buy value from a dealership so maybe if they traded straight across and gave me $2k cash It would be a solid deal. I think I'm more concerned about MX and other issues since it just 100k miles.

 

What is the secondary air pump issue and how can I check for this? Are there any other mx that should be done at 100k that I need to worry about? It is hard thinking of trading my 55k mile tacoma for this, but I really want more space and comfort since I have a baby on the way. I just don't want to rush into anything.

 

It's air injection for emissions purposes. Will give you lots of warning lights and limp mode.

There is a bypass kit available for ~$400

I would also look at oily leaks under the valve covers (technically cam towers, under the VC)

Otherwise I would just plan to replace fluids so long as nothing else seems wrong with it.

 

I'm still not quite understanding the issue here. Is this something I should be concerned about?

I may have a mechanic shop check it out if I'm serious about purchasing it.

OP- I would keep your Tacoma period.

If you want the Tundra, buy it as well. We have an older Tacoma and get asked daily to sell it. It's great on gas (4 Banger) and running locally. We also
have a 2007 Limited with very low mileage that I will keep forever as it only has 50K miles on the clock and looks pretty much brand spanking new. And Zero problems.

For sure get the Tundra checked out though.

With fuel pricing going crazy, you be glad you kept the Tacoma. Plus, with that low mile on it and being the original owner. KEEP IT.

I am actually not the original owner, but I do get your point. I just can't justify having that many vehicles with that much money invested. I think my problem is I want to trade for this tundra, but I want to keep my Tacoma and I absolutely can't do both. My wife wants me to trade for the Tundra and thinks the comfort and space is worth it alone.

 

Yes, you are trading down a little bit in reliability in my opinion. The secondary air system does like to break and the 07 is the first year of production, so there are other random things like the torque converter, for instance, that got an update after 2008.

If you're in a position where a few repairs here and there along the way aren't going to deter you, the 07 is a fine choice.

 

I have accepted the additional fuel cost and honestly it's not that much worse than my Tacoma. I get about 16 right now and I'm expecting about 13 with the Tundra. My tacoma was built to Off-road, but honestly I never got into it and haven't taken anywhere off-road other than this picture I posted of it and that was basically just a dirt road.

 

Only reason I was interested in the trade-in was the $1500 I would save on taxes, and the fact that I wouldn't have to deal with people meeting me to look at my tacoma and going through multiple people not wanting to buy. I think I could maybe get $27k-$28k so realistically I would get an additional $1k-$2k which doesn't seem that worth it to me. IDK though.

 

I am not deterred by some maintenance I just wasn't sure if It would make more sense to wait for a 2012/2013? I'm not sure the differences in reliability or if it's really anything to actually worry about. So the secondary air system, what would that cost to fix? It's been in california it's entire life and is now in Idaho so it's not rainy or humid in either places, but if I did have to fix it what would it look like?

 

I was debating the same thing as you but whether to buy a DC Tacoma or CM Tundra. Ended up with a 2010 tundra due to cab size and pretty damn close MPGs.

If youre not super worried about a few fuel, the tundra outshines the Tacoma i think. I have a coworker who wants to sell his Dodge 1500 because of the back seat size. He isnt happy having to move around the front seats just to get his daughter set up in the back due to a smaller truck.

I also bought this with 159k on it without even being a concern. These things last forever. I did a full fluid flush and that's it.

 

It's about $300 to get the bypass module and it just plugs in and disables the system.
There's a front diff bearing that likes to get noisy and there's an aftermarket kit to fix that as well inexpensively.

Costly issues for that truck would be things like resealing the cam towers, replacing the torque converter, rust, etc.

This is How happy (I am) my wife is with our 2007 Limited.

 

I bought mine a year and a half ago at 111K for basically $20k. Similar market as I am in Idaho but bought from a private party instead of the dealer. Prices have gone up since then too. From the pictures it looks to be in great condition and not extremely outrageous on price. A little high maybe but not bad. I bought mine because I’ve got two little kiddos and loved the space in the backseat. I don’t haul them around everyday but is nice on the weekends to put them in and then have the bed space for bikes and such. Mine was in a pretty similar condition but knew it was going to need a bit of maintenance. I’ve replaced shocks, all fluids, cv axles, wheels, tires, etc…. But I enjoy having a truck that I love modding and putting time into that is also a good fit for the fam.
Nice Tacoma too! I’d love to add to the fleet one day.

 

That truck looks clean. Common replacement issues on that year (I'm a prior 08 tundra owner) is water pump at 80k miles common problem with the aisin water pump look under vehicle and pull factory skid plate for pink/antifreeze, spark plugs at 125k miles, transmission fluid flush ($250 at a Toyota dealer), possible radiator leaks (coolant flush), and differential fluid change front, rear, and transfer case. Most of these are easy fixes you can do yourself. Total for all those would be about $1500. As mentioned by a guy up top the dreaded AIP pump failure can happen but there's a cheap bypass if it happened. You can pick it up on a scan tool. With the info I gave you perhaps you can talk him down. These trucks and that year will last a long time. I still feel like you can fly somewhere and get a 2.5 gen for 30k range.

 

Yeah I'm honestly contemplating looking for a 2.5 or 3rd gen for 30k range to avoid a lot of the early problems with the first few years, although it sounds like they aren't super serious problems.

As far as I know there is no way to predict when this will fail.

I know lots of people who have had it fail went with the bypass kit.

It is a lot of money (like $3k) to repair.

This happened to my '07. I read the threads about the bypass kit but decided to have the system repaired because...

I was unsure of the ramifications for emissions testing, which is required annually here in New York

I didn't feel like it was a modification I could do myself, and I'm not sure if a mechanic will make this kind of mod to the emission system.


Regardless, I don't think I'd trade a Tacoma with 55k on the clock for a truck with many more miles.

Yeah I don't know that I want to deal with that and am now looking at spending more and getting a 2012/2013/2014!

 

Other option:
buy the tundra. Get a DAP tune (look it up) for $600 bucks and have him turn off the SAIS (secondary Air injection system) and never worry about it again.

I did have to replace my water pump at 90k on my 2010. No big deal. I ended up doing the 90k service myself a few years back and was about 600-800 bucks. (all new fluids, new plugs, new filter etc).

Sorry i know that doesn't make it easier. And i don't think that the 2012 or newer are immune to the SAIS failure. (Remember beside a few quick updates in 2008 this truck was the same until 2018~2022 with just mapping improvements before the 2022 redesign.
