Low oil pressure ?

Is this low pressure? I’ve found conflicting information that it’s normal for this Gen with 4.7 or that I should replace the oil pressure sending unit. I’m thinking of replacing the sending unit when I change the oil.

If this is what you mean by below the first mark at idle - yes, that's normal as well. The gauge likes to move around.

It’ll actually go to 3/4 of the first mark after it’s warmed up and idling at a standstill.

IIRC, at startup, mine will slowly rise to just below the middle mark, then drift down to about where yours is between the 1st/2nd mark once warm.

I was just watching it yesterday after starting cold and waiting for idle to drop.

 

Normal warm idle oil pressure is 5-7 psi if I remember correctly.

 

I’ve never experienced any of this “normal” level you guys alway mention. My oil pressure rises to the middle line and never drops. Raises if I step on it but never drops below the middle(normal) line. NOL should be the middle of the gauge.

That's a short vid of mine when warmed up (5-6 miles of driving). It rises slowly to just above that line in the 1st 30 seconds the engine is running, then settles just below it to the spot shown in the pic, maybe 1-2 needle widths below that line. If I jam on the gas, it will pop a little above the line, but otherwise pretty steady.

Clearly our trucks are newer, use a different gauge, etc.

 

How many rpms are you at idle? Is it around 500 rpms or much higher?

That’s exactly how mine acts. Right below the middle line, if not right on.

Once she warms up she’ll sit around 650 in park and 500 in gear, just like @shifty`

 

Wonder if people with the early trucks were complaining about what they thought was low oil pressure to the dealers a bunch so in the newer trucks it was configured different.

 

Not knowing what early vs newer refers to, I'll simply say on my 2004, that at approx 2000 RPM, mine is dead middle and at idle it is approx 1/4(1st mark up from L. That is where I view it should be because that's how they designed meter presentation IMHO. It also somewhat aligns with what FSM speaks of....idle 4.2psi/3K RPM 43-85 psi

As for the OP, IMHO, his idiot gauge appears to be a little lazy. It's showing a lower than what I would call normal reading at 2000 RPM and even at idle to suit me. Of course, not knowing how his underhood looks, it could be simply lack of resistance making it back to the gauge. If OP has concerns, removing oil pressure switch and temporarily hooking up an oil pressure gauge, might help alleviate those concerns.

 

It's fine, the pressure at idle is between 4 and 5 psi, from the manual.

It's perfectly normal behavior for trucks of our year.

I see you also have the ABS disabled. Good for. Best thing I ever did for my truck was pull the ABS fuses.

 

Actually I have a bad wheel speed sensor that intermittently causes the ABS light to come on. I’ve got a new one ordered from rock auto.
