Cv axle cage mod

Gotta replace my cv boots, thinking about doing a cage mod. But haven’t really seen or heard much about it.. has anyone done this. Pros and cons please and thank you

 

I've never heard of a cage mod, what is it??

 

Ive heard of a bird cage for rear axles, to convert from leafs to arms, but it doesnt work for a front axle? Also confused and interested.

Your droop/bump/full steer angles are well within what the CVs can handle. Unless you have a special setup that can utilize the increased angle of the CV, you won't be gaining anything.

 

No sir. Usually the upper arm or the shock are the drop limits, not the CV. Easy way to test that is to jack your truck up so the tire is off the ground, and spin the tire. If it spins freely and isn't cogging and sticky then you know your CV is not your droop limit. If I was you I would rebuild or get new CVs and not worry about the cage, I don't think you need to modify it since I don't think it's limiting your performance.

The 1st gen Tundra CV axles were used on the 1st gen Tacomas that had 3.5in wider long travel A-arms, like the ones offered by Total Chaos. The CVs were modded for the greater articulation. All that was really done was cutting off a flange the interfered with the axle itself. This allowed for full travel. Nothing was done to the "cages". You only wanted to use the factory Toyota units as they were much stronger than the aftermarket ones as they were cast.

 

So really not much of a need for the tundras

 

Maybe if you’re going for drift car steering angle, but you’d need longer cv axles and control arms.

 

We were talking about these in another CV thread and I called Trackmotive to see what the difference was in the extended travel and extreme travel. The guy told me they are the same thing but extreme travel is the new branding. The extended travel are branded FVP on RockAuto but have the same part number and look the same. They are only $125 per.

I have 2 rebuilt oem front axles with new kartek boots and cage mod. On the shelf for a few years. You live near VA Beach?

Bummer.

Essentially for the cage mod, you'r cutting about 10mm (the entire boot flange) off of the axle housing. Then you put a larger boot, typically the porcshe 930 boot around the entire house and clamp it down. Looks like this:

 

search on google images "cv cage mod or "cv boot mod" and look at the other tundra site member write ups. The write ups on taco world are good also, basically the same thing. Much easier to do standing up at a work bench than on your back. Cheap investment of parts but terribly messy. I told myself I'd never do it again lol

 

I figured since I’ve gotta re boot em anyways. Why not
