So I looked into this. Not that particular meteorite, one my brother found. There’s a few problems, they almost never contain good steel for blades and they rarely have a very good pattern when etched. The best use is to get thin slices etched, polished and inlaid in the handle. I would love to try my hand at using some if you could send a piece my way! I’ve never seen any mammoth tusk, but the pictures make it look pretty brittle. Get me some of that stuff too, lol

I like Ray, so I'll let him think he's running the show for a bit.

I've seen worse from some with 20+ years of "experience". Honestly if you can keep your travel speed and nozzle angle consistent, you'll be pretty close to dialed. This looks more like a positioning issue than anything else. If you can, stick the short end of the pipe in a vise (pipe standing vertical) and do the weld in the flat position.

Yeah I was just getting it done, I didn’t do any test welds. I feel like travel and tip positioning is always something I have trouble with

It just take time. You obviously have a decent idea what you're doing, just need some tweaks. I could have you dialed in half an hour. Having an experienced welder over your shoulder really shortens the learning curve. To this day I can still hear my grandfather in my ear saying "faster. not that fast. rod back a bit. good. too slow..." Miss you grandpa. :(

Yeah I always remember my cousin telling me “back off, I can hear your too close!”
I really need to get my 115 Miller at home dialed in. My ignorant ass bought a longer stinger for the mig; pretty sure that’s what’s causing my issues, it can’t push the current that far with the longer lead

That could be part of it, especially if you're having penetration (giggidy) and lack of fusion issues. From the pic though, your heat and wire speed look good. It really just looks like a positioning thing. I'd play with your travel speed, direction, how you set up the piece to weld and how you position your body.

Man, all this welding talk makes me wish I had kept up on it. Never did get to do the fancy wire welding, but did ok with the old school arc welder with a rod. I was a bit slower than other kids in the shop class, but my welds were better. Biggest thing that made me quit was the stupid "no hats" rule at school, and the bits of molten metal burning my head as a result. Really really wish I had stuck with it.

I was pretty bad back in the day as an A/C helper welding frames. Had the shop foreman give me a 3 minute lesson, nodded at my first try, and threw me in the field. It took a few months before I thought I did something decent; but in the meantime there are some 10 and 20 ton units sitting on some sketchy frames... Maybe not still, since that was almost 40 years ago.

My dad has an old Lincoln 230V stick welder in his garage. Probably paid $75 for that thing from Sears. Would love to have that; but I'd love to wait 40 more years to get it.

    Nice!

You’d be surprised at how many “welders” would be proud of that weld.
    If it holds it holds.
You probably enter buildings daily that have worse welds holding shit together.

Been living with it for decades. I get depressed if I go a year without snow, but the sudden swing from chilly days to freezing is always a shock to the system.

True and I am the same way. I do enjoy living where I get all 4 seasons. When you get used to 20-30 deg. As soon as it hits 50ish it’s shorts and t-shirt weather. Looking forward to that!

Here, the most extreme temperature swing in a day has been around 40 degrees and fairly rare. In AZ, we would regularly get swings of around 60 degrees in spring and early summer. It made gardening very difficult. Poor plants didn’t know if they were coming or going, lol
