I’m sure there is a scientific reason for this. Down here in Texas with a blizzard coming through the area. Rain, sleet, snow, ice. I turned my truck on heated up defrosted windows and as I was about to drive off now I have a crack from side to side. Is this normal or just shit luck? Never in my life has this happened.

Not normal, more than likely had a crack and the heat from defroster caused it to run

Yeah. 100% there was a crack somewhere for that to happen. Whether it be from a small pebble hitting the windshield (could've even happened while in-transit on the car carrier) or there was a defect from the factory.

What will be interesting is to see how the dealership will handle it. I don't think glass is normally covered under warranty. If there's only a few miles on the truck, they might work with you on it. If you've got a lot of miles already (like me with 4k) they probably would tell me to call my insurance and use my glass coverage. Also...with the truck being so new...I would be surprised if glass or body shops have access to replacement windshields right now.

Let us know how it goes! Good luck!

I know for a fact there was no chip in the glass, I just inspected it closer and it originated from the very edge of the drive side. Bottom left hand corner.

There are other reports of this happening when the wiper park defrost is turned on in cold weather.

When the new model Jeeps JL came out, it was a problem with the new acoustic glass. I think some upper trim Tundras have this feature. The problem was getting replacements in the first few months with a new model. Parts designated for the assembly plant can't just be diverted on demand apparently as it is a different bucket to come from. So some waited weeks for a windshield replacement (just a bother). Personally I think the acoustic glass is an unnecessary add. Really does little except give a funny tinkling sound with light rain. Here is hoping replacements are available soon.

yeah I have an SR5 so I don’t know what kind of glass I have. I called Toyota and they already tried to say it would not be covered. I’m gonna take it in let them do the inspections of the glass to see if there is a point of impact anywhere. A buddy of mine told me they basically run a pen test. If it stops anywhere it determines a point of impact. Either way I’m gonna fight it. We’ll see what happens.

Yea talk to your selling dealer. I have GM pay for two windshields. The pen test was used and the service manager said it was a stress crack and gm covered it.

I’ve got a nice chip in mine from a rock. I went to try to get safelite to fill it and can’t even select 22 Tundra on the website yet so I’m going to call and see. I can fill mine, but getting one replaced right now might be very hard to find. Probably only dealerships will have them in the near future….if they can even get them.

My buddy is a service directer in the area and told me his good friend can replace it but it’s a different dealership. I’m gonna see if I can get the on the sold me the truck to make it right first.

This exact thing happened yesterday morning at my house in STL, Missouri. I did have a small rock chip and warmed up the truck and drove off in the early mornig hours, only to see the east to west crack across....

This better be covered by my insurance.

Update: All the snow and Ice has melted. I was on my way to Toyota when I noticed a shiny reflection from the windshield at a certain point close to my passenger side. I pulled over and did the pen test and sure enough there is an obvious point of impact. I'm not going to waste my time taking it in for something I know they won't do anything about. Auto policy does not have Glass Coverage so I'm screwed.

I'm sort of in the same boat. Mine was completely smashed by ice flying off the roof off another truck. Now Im wondering if my windshield will be replaced soon. I just got mine Wednesday. It doesn't even have 200 miles yet.

Yeah man it sucks. I have a buddy of mine that is a service director for Ford and Lincoln. He is well known in my area and knows the director of service department for a major Toyota dealership in the area. He’s gonna try to see if he can call in a favor. Not sure what the outcome will be yet tho.

I just spoke with the collision dept. for my local Toyota dealer and they told me they won't just repair the windshield. They said they'd replace it if the cause of the damage was a result of a collision and even then they get Safelite to repair it.

My safelite quote was $719 and I had to bring it to their shop! ....not including the tint.

Winter sucks for many reasons now!

FL living....where windshields are free with insurance. Every vehicle seems to get hit with a stone or something on the highway at some point. Log into progressive, report it, they set me up with an appointment with Safelite and it gets done and the bill paid for by insurance.

That sucks man. I'm fortunate that my windshield is covered under my insurance. The down fall is the wait due to the windshield not being readily available. Hopefully you're good to go soon.

I was going to say you must have had a chip. Windshields won't crack like that for no reason. The extreme swing in temps you have just experienced is why it happened. It happens all the time her in Utah. We have glass coverage on all our vehicles. Never pay a penny for my replacement windshields.

This may or may not be the case for you, but they tried the same crap w/me a month or so ago. Windshield broke, and they were telling me I had to drive like 70 miles to their shop.

Called the local place, and asked them if that was normal, and they said "No, it's not; they can't tell you where you must go. Anyone in Safelite's preferred network can do it; and we're part of that. Call Safelite and tell THEM where you want to bring your vehicle."

So I did and they were like "Oh yeah...if they're closer you can take it to them."

The windshields are not free. You pay some of the highest premiums in the country.

Safelite or (your insurance companies in network business) might also be able to do it at your home or place of work.

FYI: The weakest part of windshields is at the edges. They are thinner on the edges to allow for some flexibility in hot and cold temperatures. A rock chip on the edge will almost always turn into a crack.

This. I've had Safelite fill 2 chips on one vehicle and fully replace a windshield on another in the last 10 years. All three times they came to my place of work and did it in the parking lot.

I’ve put 4 windshields in my truck and could use a 5th.

I actually asked about that. I can't say whether or not they can for sure, but they essentially told me that given the recalibration they have to do with the TSS stuff, I essentially have to bring it in. My guess is that even if it's not true, it's a bigger pain in the butt for them to go onsite. *shrug* They can do it for chips and stuff, though.

Stats are nice but you are averaging millions of folks. My premiums for full coverage are lower than any state average for my wife and I.

Be ready, Tundras eat windshields. I am on my 4th one. They really eat windshields if your front end is level. Think I paid $450 for my last wind shield with Pilkington glass. Had it one year caught a rock cracked again.
