Long description of my problem to ensue. Skip to bottom for basic question lol

I’m wanting to get a new tonneau. I currently have a Tyger tri fold that the previous owner put on and I hate that it only folds up 2/3 of the way when I am hauling bulky items. It also flaps in the wind a ton, I don’t like the latch system, and overall quality just isn’t great IMO. I’ve been going back and forth on getting a camper shell/topper or a tonneau. I go camping with my wife, 2 kids, and our mastiff frequently so storage is at a premium, especially with the 5.5’ bed of the tundra. I like the idea of the bak revolver or similar hard roll up cover for hauling tall items as a daily driver because the roll ups don’t block the rear view and also allow for full bed use, but when I’m wanting protection from the elements for our cargo I’m limited to the space under the tonneau (which is where the topper option comes in). I had a tonneaupro soft roll up on a previous truck and the quality and usability of it was great as well, but again, the lack of usable weather protected space is an issue. Retrax has a great solution with their Yakima partnership. Hard tonneau with a rack system for storage options above the bed. I already have a Yakima cargo box for my wife’s SUV that I could tote above the bed on the rails for extra space as well as other accessories for our stuff. The issues with the retrax system are the cost ($2k+ for a tonneau?), the reports of a lot of water leaking, and the canister taking up nearly a foot of bed length. (Remember that space is a premium part?)

I’m wondering if anyone has a solution that would Allow for a t-track system to go on the bed rails with a quality roll up tonneau cover similar to the retrax/Yakima system. I came across the truxedo elevate in my search, but it isn’t compatible with the deck rail system (which I have). Any other similar options out there?

    thanks

I use a Tyger roll up that utilizes the bed rails. It works well, it does flap a little in the wind, but if you pull the sides tight after rolling it out it does not flap much.

You can get the lower Retrax significantly cheaper. If you want a T-tack tonneau then you get what you pay for. If you want cheaper than you have to accept the compromises.

Maybe check out the stake pockets ladder rack style. I have both the tall and the short uprights from ADARAC.
Swapping them out between summer and winter setup takes about 30 minutes, 2 screws in each upright while keeping the crossbar.
I have the roll up tonneau ( BAK revolver) cover and it clears the uprights and helps keep the cargo "dry".
Just be aware due to the thawing and freezing it does freezes and prevent me from rolling up, but it keeps all my ice fishing gear secure.
The winter setup is to carry my popup ice shelter as its to long for the bed.
The summer setup is to carry longer items like wooden boards and my canoe.

Thanks. That seems like a good option. Hadn’t thought about it freezing, but I’m in Texas so that wouldn’t be too frequent lol

Biggest problem I have with the retractable is the big canister in the bed taking up so much space. A roll up is a similar concept just outside of the bed, they just don’t have the t-tracks that I’ve seen

Yes, you do loose some bed space, but this is where I store my lower profile items. I keep the jack, recovery gear and tools under the canister which maximizes my storage space.

I agree 100%. I had a roll-n-lock cover on my last truck and that canister was always in the way! I also hated the required strap to close the cover, again, always in the way.

I just put an Extang Exceed cover on this weekend. So far, I like it and it accommodates the rail system. Only minor gripe is it covers the rear camera if folded all the way back. I'll live with it, as I don't do that often.
