Doing my first oil change on the Tundra. When I removed the oil pan drain plug I see what appears to the crush washer stuck on the pan (its blue). I can't get it off. Is it indeed a crush washer?? I see a new one came with the OEM filter so I assume it has to be changed. All other vehicles I've had have a simple steel washer that never gets stuck.

It’s common. Take a flat screw driver and give it a pop with the palm of your hand.

I left it on - long as there are no leaks...

This is exactly what I do.

This is exactly what I would do if I didn't have a replacement drain plug gasket on hand at the time of my oil change. I buy OEM gaskets on Amazon in bulk because I have three vehicles that use them.

I got it off using a plastic pry tool and a hammer. The pry tool alone wasn't working. The whole process was a PIA. Skid plate, 1/2 a dozen steps just for the filter......

Glad you got the crush washer off. They always get stuck for me too. If not for the skid plate it’s a very easy job. I like the satisfaction of doing a precise job myself though even though it’s annoying.

I agree, always have done my own oil changes for this reason but I'm not getting any younger. Getting down and up off the garage floor numerous times is taxing Lol.

Get an RCI skid plate, Fumoto valve and the MotivX kit and you can change your oil in 10 min - and not spill a drop! Search this forum and you’ll find tons of info.

I do have the drain valve tube and special filter housing wrench. For doing it for the first time on the truck, wasn't really messy. Just took longer than what I'm used to from having to do the added steps with the skid plate, and filter stuff. Like another member said, a few more times and it won't be bad.

Question: Manual calls for 8.4 qts with a filter change. Who does an even 8 and calls it good?

Can't believe people have difficulty with an oil change lol.

Fill to 8 quarts with filter. Put cap back on, idle for a few mintues, turn off. Check level after a few minutes again, fill to the top dimple on the dip stick if needed.

I've done 7 engine oil changes now on my 5.7L FFV. 8.5 quarts puts it right at the top line on the stick.

Just take a angle grinder and cut a square hole, no real need for cover , not heavy off roader so works great.IMG-1003.jpg IMG-1001.jpg

I feel ya. I also did my first oil change today too. (Had the dealership do it for the first 50k mile)

Just a giant pain in the ass on this engine. Why couldn't they just make it so a regular oil filter fits on there?

I'm able to just go in through the side and take the filter off with the skid plate still on.

I gently pry mine off with a putty knife, trying not to mar the surface of the pan. 90430-12031 for a new washer.

Ever since my first Toyota in 2003 I was told to make sure you replace that washer every time you change the oil.

The washer has always stayed put on the pan, I've never taken it off, and I've never had a leak in 19 years, across four different Toyotas.
