WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO YOUR 3RD GEN TUNDRA TODAY?

Tried a similar approach with deleting chrome. Color matched everything but the part around the grill. Not perfect but an improvement.

 

I like it; it’s different. Can you post a picture from far away to see how the grill looks with the rest of the truck?

I installed the BakFlip cover I had on my 2020, It kinda fit but bed is wider so not ideal. When the BakFlip cover for 2020 is installed my two camera's are basically useless (the cover rest just below the camera; but high enough to cover the image). Since I paid $1400 for the bakflip 3 yrs ago; I figured I'd try and it works 'good enough' I'll probably keep it until someone with a 2021 wants to pay me enough to justify the move to new one.

 

I decided to do the same with my retrax and modify it other than to deal with low ballers.

I ended up using a 3x63” steel plate and mounted it to the front of the bed. So far so good. I’m sure I’ll have a small leak somewhere but it beats selling my $1800 cover for less than 1k and rebuy a new one.

Got my vinyl and I love to look. Easy installation, great instructions, fast shipping and reasonable pricing. I plan on adding the lower bumper “tundra” as well as the interior dash.

Love the look of the TRD rails, but you make a great point about the surface area to step onto when getting out. Now that you've had this for a few months, have you found it more natural for other adults (spouse) and kids? These would be my preference because the Predator's stick out and I'd hate to catch them on something off-roading, but I also don't want my wife (or me) getting out and slipping off the rail. I'm pushing 60 and don't heal like I used to. Thanks!

I'm sure a dumb question, but what's the benefit of the bed mat? The only time I've personally seen one used was back in the Gen-1 days before spray-in and plastic bed liners became common. It both protected the paint in the bed floor as well as helped to prevent objects from sliding around. Thanks.

 

I agree about the TRD on the grille and I figured the tailgate and any others that I add are fairly inexpensive and removable. I’ll try them out, and keep them on if I love them, remove them if I don’t.

 

Composite bed is so slippery it makes hauling anything a pain. Bedliner can fix that problem but a mat is cheaper and I like the flexibility of removing it if I want.

 

Good question, our Tundra does not have a spray in bed liner, the composite floor is slick when wet. Gear slides easily on the floor without a mat, too. We're also campers, when I'm walking in the bed to get stuff, occasionally need to get on these old knees and the mat is softer, too.

 

So where are you getting the bed step?

I hate the fact that if you choose the TRD OR package on the 1794, you can't choose the automatic running boards and the bed step. Maybe it's a problem with the configurator, but I can't imagine why these options are all mutually exclusive. Regardless, they should be made available as accessories and maybe that will come in time.

 

I didn't realize that the new bed was so slippery. I thought it had a stickier surface, but maybe the ones I've read about or seen on Youtube were spray-in liners. That would certainly explain it then. Thank you for the quick response and info.

 

I can certainly appreciate that! I'm pushing 60 and I get in and out of my '07 Tundra a lot when hauling firewood, etc. - and I even have the bumper to assist as a step. The new model doesn't even have that, so yeah it's going to be ugly getting in/around that bed without something protecting the knees. How much was the mat? Thanks for the info!

 

Ordered mat online from the local dealer with pickup at the dealer for $168.

Keep this lightweight aluminum step in the back of the Tundra for reaching over the pickup bed side and very handy while camping, too. Keep a telescoping aluminum ladder in the pickup bed for reaching top of the camper, too:

 

Even on my ‘not so older knees’ I got the bedmat as I don’t want to be crawling around back there on anything else.

I got my OEM mat from Sparks Toyota for $138…but their shipping is steep so you may want to shop around at other dealerships.

Other companies make mats/rugs too so search for those options (I don’t know them all)
