Turbo issue

They really messed up by making that deceptive super bowl commercial. To mimic real life One of the 4 Tundras should have had the turbo failure and not made it up the mountain.

Toyota should have resurrected their tried and true inline six twin turbo from their Supra TT! Maybe with a few updates and they would have had a winner in the Tundra. It called design re-use! One of the most reliable, well engineered, and smooth running engines they ever produced. I had a '94 and it was an awesome car! Easily tweakable to the max. Stock boost was 10 PSI (320HP) and with a couple of simple mods you could easily be at 15 PSI (420 HP) safely. That car for a sports car was solid as a rock. I had my fun with it and sold it with 135k miles on it. In hindsight I probably should have kept it as they are commanding top dollar today.

 

sweet motor, all hp, no torque. Dodge has a new I-6 turbo coming out. We’ll see how that goes. I’m a fan of the online 6. Buttery smooth. Loved my BMW 525

 

Visiting my friends at Hendrick Toyota N Chas. Three 22 Tundras in for service. 2 turbos, 1 had the active grill get hit with rocks from the road and the truck killed all the safety stuff. Buying a first year truck is being the tester.

 

that really seems to be the case with this truck, I had the first ever tacoma, it was fine, the first ever tundra, it was mainly fine.

this is way beyond that due to the complexity Toyota went too to compete.

for me, just my opinion, given the price and the amount and severity of the problems, it's a shit box right now.

that said, I have confidence toyota will fix it all, its just going to take time, Im close to skipping the 2022 all together and maybe looking at 2023. I was hoping they would have everything ironed out by the summer but it seems more and more doubtful at the moment.

 

I like some bells and whistles for comfort in a daily driver, but keep the mechanicals simple and reliable please. All this DGI, TT VVTI business is complicating a simple setup. I know they all help with power and emissions and it’s the price we pay.

 

Toyota had no choice. Complexity is the only way to beat fuel regulations unless we all drive Priuses. I don't blame them for going complex, I do blame them for shipping a product with such glaring defects. Let some employees take them home for 2 months and this would've been avoided

 

Sad part is the statistics show most people don't want the newest. All this emissions and safety equipment drives up prices. Who would've imaged the government mandating backup cameras? That adds hundreds to every new car. The average age of a car is growing older and older, for obvious reasons.

 

I still love my 2000 Tundra, which is certainly a modern vehicle. But it’s so far behind my 2019 in a lot of ways. Oddly, most of those things don’t really matter as a daily driver.

 

Some things are worth the extra cost, safety being one of them. Backup cameras have been one of the best additions to new vehicles. I'll never go back to not having one. That and the rear-cross-traffic alert.

 

I don't see why a regular cab short bed pickup truck needs a backup camera, or a 2 door convertible. Leave it as an optional add on, then you can have a choice!

 

Let me introduce you to my spouse, who got our insurance cancelled after hitting 2 cars in the span of 4 months while reversing .

I myself need front end safety features for dealing with long commutes in heavy traffic.

 

If states required actually difficult driving exams that must be passed prior to receiving a license, a lot of the “need” for tech features that really just make up for widespread driver’s deficiency would be eliminated. I wish we had to demonstrate proficiency in all areas of driving a vehicle, including reversing, parking, evasive manuevering. Currently, driver’s license exams are a total joke, which is why people can have a valid license and not know how to properly reverse a motor vehicle.

 

I'm not saying they should outlaw backup cameras. I had an aftermarket one installed on my truck. But there should not be a mandate forcing that on new cars, make it optional. All it does is raise the price of vehicles and trap people in

A. an old car that is far less safe due to common sense stuff such as crumple zones
B. an even more expensive car payments because of mandated equipment

 

My South Carolina test required backing down a one lane road without looking behind for like 200 yards. I don't remember the last time I was ever that stressed

 

Excellent posting. Toyota could have sent these trucks our for real world use, but was so worried about exposure and people seeing this truck that they sacrificed their most prized possession, reliability.

 

I agree they probably haven’t resolved it fully yet but I’m sure they’ve figured out how to diagnose the bad units now. It’s highly likely that bad units made their way out and made it into trucks built in Jan.

Toyota was all over the place with this truck. TFL had an article about a spy shot off the truck nearly every other week. It’s a lot different having 20 prototypes driving in the real world vs 20k production units though.

 

People are lazy and don’t look behind them. There could also be something blocking the view.

 

ya, Ive liked mine at time with driving with bigger stuff in the bed or the tonneau cover up so you cant see out the rear view mirror. its ben handy then.

 

Like using the backup camera for getting the hitch ball lined up with the travel trailer hitch. Most of the time get it lined up under the hitch on the first try, handy when solo.

 

Unless it is like my used 1966 Mustang 200 CID straight 6 with 1 bbl carb, buttery smooth alright, until the spark plugs fouled... but no HP and no torque ever at all. Dad got it for me so I didn't complain.

 

would have loved a 66 stang as my first car. I doubt the Supra’s 2JZ or the Bimmers M series motors were anything like your mustang’s. Modern inline turbo 6’s make gobs of power and even have a pleasant exhaust note. Lots of companies are going back to them. They are better balanced, and efficient to boot.

 

Indeed, BMW 6s are great. Just make sure to do the VANOS maintenance and walnut blast the intake valves! And yes, I wish I still had that car... sweet fastback model.

 

VANOS, the mere mention of the word strikes fear in The hearts of BMW owners everywhere. That and “out of warranty”. I had a non-VANOS M50 in my E34. Not a rocket, but had legs on the highway. Super smooth transmission too. Full lockup torque converter that would lock between each gear change. Felt like a 7 speed auto.

 

For the love of all things holy. I don’t understand why people buy first year vehicles.

I’m certain some of the people that are having issues have up perfectly fine vehicles to buy a lemon, rather at least waiting for a 23/24 model
Year. No way in hell I’d pay 60k to be a tester. The next two years of this truck are going to have so many improvements.

 

Ok to buy. But don’t buy and complain. You know what you got.
