OTA Update to Make Remote Start Work Properly on Gen 2.5 Trucks

So supposedly Toyota will be pushing out an OTA update soon for the Gen 3 trucks that will allow you to start the truck remotely, get in the truck, and perform an "ignition takeover" to drive the truck without it shutting off (as long as you have the key fob). Brilliant. Should've worked this way from the start.

My question is, would a similar update be possible for the Gen 2.5 trucks?

I would SO love to have this ability, as the engine shut off is annoying and basically negates the benefit of a remote start system. I'm most interested in 2020/2021 trucks with smart entry/pushbutton start, but I'd be curious about the key ignition models too. Anyone know if it's possible? If so, we need to push Toyota to do this like the 2022 buyers did.

 

Most likely possible for Gen 2.5 but hard to say definitively without knowing how the system is set up. Not sure it can be done OTA however. Seems like its modifying the ECU to not trigger engine shut off when the door switch is actuated.

 

I'm guessing this was set up to address some security consideration that had them settle with the shut off feature. I think more folks prefer it to not shut off when opening the door but it should be patched as an option to support both IMO.

The current set up isn't a show stopper for me but I wont say no to an update.

 

It’s almost a show stopper for me. After having two other “normal” factory remote start vehicles (dating back to the 2013 model year), I was absolutely baffled when I found out my brand new Tundra did this crap. So simple to incorporate keyless (or keyed, if you have one) takeover with brake pedal kill. Glad to see Toyota’s finally getting with the program. Now please come up with a way to do it on my 2020!

 

We for sure need this. I have been remote starting mine for the past month or so and I too am baffled by the shut off feature.
