Wife and I Traveling the Country - Need Larger Vehicle

What didn't you like about it? Just uncomfortable? What car would you pick for this? Bc this is exactly what we'd be doing.

Crewmax 6.5 bed is perfect for mtn bikes.. and other stuff for days.. just wait till summer and I'm sure you'll have canopy options if your bikes really need to be 'stored inside'...
As a 22 owner. Love it. Butter smooth ride. Awesome interior even with the smaller 8 inch screen. Wireless apple car play android auto is awesome. Very comfortable on road trips. Super bright led lights at night. Tons of space. No regrets.

I ride the Trek Procaliber 9.5 right now. Looks like it should fit. But I was going to load it up and drive it to the dealer for an official fit test before purchase. How do you secure them?

Prior to seat jackers it was like sitting on the seat vs. in the seat. After seat jackers the position is great, however the bottom cushion still sucks balls if you spend a long time in the seat. It simply doesn't have the comfort to fit the bill for me in your situation. Pretty sure a good upholstery shop will eventually be correcting it. Not a huge deal to me, but it could be to you or someone else.

 

I have driven almost 24k miles since I bought my truck at the very end of Sept 2020. I’ve done two full days in a row a few times. The seats aren’t uncomfortable to me at all. I wonder if this is a health/age/lower back issue, but I really have no complaints with the seats. Here are my real world issues with my truck:

• CarPlay is buggy. I can’t tell if it’s my phone or the interface, but sometimes I have to plug it in a second time to get it to connect.
• I wish the cup holders were a bit bigger.

Other than that, I love my truck. Knowing I can go extremely high miles without headaches is very much worth the fuel bill to me.

There are a few issues, widespread or not, with the rollout of the ‘22 that would make a lot of us hesitant to buy at this point. The overwhelming majority of us on this forum drive a 1st or 2nd gen Tundra, and we do so because their biggest feature is reliable longevity. For this crowd, any hiccups are going to make us hesitant.

 

Mtn bikes are so big nowdays. He’ll have to get a topper with the raised roof hump in the rear.


Someone mentioned the f150 Lariat not coming with heated steering wheel misc. You can all that on a lariat, you can get most everything except massaging seats. A platinum is almost a better value except the tailgate poses a theft issue.

 

OP. Yes lane keep and radar cruise control along with the latest Safety Sense monitor that will detect smaller kids, animals etc. Keyless entry with push button start/stop and shark fin antenna. Apple Car Play/Android (not wireless though) 8.1in display with JBL audio system and like 11 speakers. ‘20-‘21 Limited and up I really think would do the job along with a locking tonneau cover for your luggage and attached rack system for your bikes etc.

 

Not yet but I’m happily waiting for mine and happily reading all the comments by people who actually own a 2022. There are not a lot of naysayers among that group!

 

I'm surprised it made it to the second page before the Sequoia was mentioned, especially after OP said he was considering a top for a truck bed.

I think Sequoia would be perfect - enjoy the 5.7 for a few years while Toyota works the bugs out of the 3rd gen.

 

Are there Sequoias available? I’ve never seen one for sale at my local dealer.

 

It will not be any better on the West Coast. That’s where I am. I ended up buying from a Toyota dealer in the San Francisco area but looked at every dealership of any kind all over the whole west coast trying to find cars.

Easiest option: buy used/certified no more than 3-4 years old. Under 50k miles to make it last and be reliable and still be warrantied by the certification or an extended warranty. Be prepared to pay the listed price or close to it. There won’t be a lot of haggling room

Don’t lease. I have family and friends who are traveling nurses. You’ll stay out a few months at a time but then it’s off to the next place. You will all but certainly put more miles on it than you think. Probably a lot more. Especially if you’re doing long haul driving.

 

I vote find a '21 or older.

 

Another problem I have with a Tundra and traveling is the bumpers are both crap. Very little to protect against damage up front when you meet Bambi. Then the rear, bump anything and it will cave. After that, you might have payload issues. Good luck adding a topper and all your stuff, plus two people. No matter what, gonna squat, to minimize that check out Roadmaster Active Suspension. Yep, there goes more payload. Bumpers, suspension, topper, payload is gone before you load anything else. Just my .02, carry on!

 

and i’d like a truck that can tow a travel trailer into a 30 mph headwind at 7000’ of elevation while pulling a 7% grade and not be redlined the whole time.

if it i wasnt for Ford bringing out the Ecoboost 10 years ago, I’d probably have a diesel HD cause the V8’s couldnt do what I described.

 

does Roadmaster make an active suspension for the ‘22? It has coils…..

 

OP requires lane keep assist (agree this is a great feature on long trips) which eliminates all Sequoias and all Tundras except 2022. It also sounds like you want a V6 for fuel economy which really leaves you with a F150 and 22’ Tundra to consider.

I love the F150s features but just can’t recommend knowing a few people who own them, they’re constantly having electronics issues. Blinker turns on windshield wiper. Loud whistle coming from turbos. Most recently I was in one driving in -20 degrees and the window defroster broke (would turn back on if we hit the actuator with a wrench but that stopped working too), we had to drive home with a space heater on the windshield to see out of a small melted circle.

In either case, i’d look to buy a warranty and factor that into my budget. 10yr 125k miles on 2022 Tundra is ~$2k. 8yr 100k on Ford is ~$3500. Tells you how each company values its own reliability.

 

This saved me a lot of research. Thanks. So back to the original 2, though the 22 or 23 sequoia may be an option. Going to talk to a dealer about a 23 seq pre order. Probably will be too late though…

The way I see it, nobody in their right mind is buying a 22. If they do, they deserve what they get.

 

This is based on the widespread Turbo failures? (There’s 5 logged on the thread tracking turbo failures here). Lots of people have experienced trouble free ownership and are happy with their purchase. Is it a gamble? Every new car or truck purchase is. Is it more of a gamble knowing some issues exist? Yes. Are you guaranteed to get a janky truck? No, plenty have gotten exactly what they wanted with no problems. Heck, even the jackwagon on YT running his truck through all the mud holes and tearing his bumpers off hasn’t had any real problems with his. Well, none that he didn’t create. If they were readily available, I likely would have bought one. I would be a little nervous about it, but I’m sure they’ll sort the bugs. If I was the OP, I wouldn’t buy one though. Got a lot of exploring, long drives out of town and new places to go. Bad place to take the first year truck that hasn’t been sorted yet.

 

Get on the Ford site and build and price one.

The 22's have multiple issues, as you said turbo issue, randomly shutting down issues while driving, generally too much of a car, asthetics, price too high for what you get, lack of aftermarket accessories, yeah the bed creasing the cab, you could even include lack of tow hooks, etc. Face it, it's a PTA mom vehicle, not a truck.

 

A lot of what you said is the same beaten you death rhetoric that all the haters keep saying. Not helpful. “Too much of a car”? The hell does that even mean? It’s a cab and bed on boxed frame solid rear axle, with an elevated ride and seating position with the ability to tow over 10k lbs. it’s a truck. It’s got the same rear suspension setup that dodge uses. The same engine and transmission setup that Ford uses. It’s a truck.

 

Yeah the 5.7 makes peak torque at high RPMs. It’s meant to be wound up, and it is more comfortable living there than most drivers are hearing the RPMs. The way some people talk about it, I expected my truck to be very sluggish in SW Colorado at 11-13k ft last summer. Granted, I wasn’t pulling a trailer, but I was loaded up over GVWR and didn’t even notice on- or off-road. S5 held lockup just fine over those long highway passes.

I will enjoy the low end torque of the iForce Max in several years when I decide to get another truck. For now, the 5.7 is awesome.
