Bed can hit cab and cause damage

So a 1 foot mud hole (he was in?) becomes a 10 Foot mud hole you've been in lol. (just messin w/ya,it's all good)

 

No arguments with this.

 

Not sure we saw a video of where the damage occurred. Could have been (probably was) something MUCH worse he just did not have his camera up. We can all speculate but will probably never know

 

The guy indicated in another vid his life is boring and these kind of activities put fun in his life. More power to him for enjoying life before being too old to do anything.

 

Using this dipshit as a litmus test to gauge the abilities of the new Tundra seems like a pretty futile endeavor.

 

New update to this, they appear to have found the spot where it happened, on video. I definitely would not call this abuse. Yes this youtuber doesn't have much sense but this seems like a fairly standard recovery, no? Also now a Toyota engineer is involved.

Well they dont come with tow hooks, so pulling from the front will probably damage or rip the bumper off, if you can find something to hook to, and now it looks like you cant pull fron the back either without damage.

 

Like the guy or not.. He found a serious flaw that most likely won’t be an easy fix!? A bed kiss from pulling it out of a mud hole! Seriously Toyota WTF.. No way in hell I would be a buyer until this is fixed.

In many industries, there's such a thing as "test to failure" and it's very useful info. You may not like him as a person, but he's showing us how to break the new Tundra, which I appreciate. Now we know what it can't do. It is useful info.....

 

My question then is, what's the failure point? Is it not supposed to flex that much, or is it supposed to flex that much and the bed gap is just too small. Or is it sheer force and the bed is deforming out of square?

 

Maybe a combination of problems. Maybe he previously broke a mount or joint allowing more flex in a certain direction?

 

And that bed had to move a lot to cause that damage!

 

It’s just the frame and the engine that is having having major issues. The rest of the truck seems solid.

 

I'm seeing a potential market here. When I get my truck, I'll post videos of me using it. Unlike this shmuck, I actually know how to use a truck though. We can have a comparison between an ignorant abuser and experienced user. LOL

What would you have done differently on the recovery that caused the damage?

 

I wouldn't have gotten stuck there in the first place, because I understand the limits of a stock half ton pickup truck. I see those exact types of roads every spring here where I hunt, shoot and fish. I don't drive my truck down them and many would say my '05 with Cooper ST Maxx tires and a levelling job is more capable than his '22. I unload the ATV instead of beating on a full size truck.

If I had lost my marbles and gotten into that mess anyways then MaxxTrax, digging around the frame and tires to release as much tension as possible and a kinetic tow strap would be my starting point. You can see they didn't even dig around the rear of the truck at all. All that mud is providing resistance which can/did? lead to excessive twisting of the frame.

That said, I'm not convinced the damage came from the pull. I think there's footage he's not showing.

 

Lol. The idiot sees his bed flex a little on video and everyone takes his word that’s where the damage came from? That recovery did not put that dent in there.

 

Or he figured posting the video when the damage occurred would do him no favors. Especially if he intends on making an attempt for Toyota to fix it under warranty.

 

Man, that can’t be how the damage happened. Just being lightly pulled out from the rear?!? Has to be more to it. Maybe he hit the mud hole hard and it threw the bed into the back of the cab.

If the bed flexes that much just from being pulled from behind then I imagine a moderate roll into a mud hole would cause the bed to hit the cab. Not good if that’s the case.

hopefully he just didn’t video himself hitting a jump at 60mph..

 

I must be crazy but that looks like a change of lighting affecting what you see not the bed moving?

Ford did this with the original Raptors and some amateur desert racer club that was bending frames.

 

Well, it's clear his frame isn't permanently bent. He easily gets his fingers into the gap for paint touchup. It's also clear there was a helluva lot of flex to cause that damage to the cab. He showed the bulge in the bedfront where the major contact was made. I love this guy.

So what did we learn from his videos? I guess we now know (and figured pretty quick) the plastic bumper caps come off pretty easy. We know there is flex in the rear of the frame. We know he met Victor Sheppard at the Toyota shop and he showed Sheppard's 702k mile 5.7l Tundra. We know front tow hooks are a good thing to have. We know the capabilities of a stock TRDOR.

 

That things got more petroleum products blowing around than an 01 Cummins!

 

I think the engineer mentioned it may be an issue with the composite bed, they flex, they really flex when you put them off camber. If you put weight in them or on top of the bed rails, bed stiffeners would probably be a good idea. Stiffeners are also a good idea if you haul dirt or any materials that put any stress on the bedsides, you will know when it puts a little stress by the increasing in the tailgate gap..

Compotites are tough, but the end of the day they are plastic, and they can flex. Just google tacoma composite bed broken and look at images.

 

If it flexed like that by pulling it backwards to get out of that rut, then I guess it will do the same if you try to go up an incline or big bump in reverse.
I guess one could stuff a couple of pillows where it meets the cab to cushion it. Lol
