And it's also good to know that he is not the only one that thinks that way, most people that actually own the 22 Tundra love it. It's the people that don't actually own one that complain, kind of pointless.

except all the people who actually own one and have seen the quality issues and mechanical failures. We complain to.

 

It said most, not all.

 

No problem with that, but most issues would not be revealed in a test drive, but would be evident in daily driving situations.

 

I hope your truck is everything you want (and more) but maybe you can kind of understand when most of us hear a comment like “1300 miles and So Far So GOOD” we cringe quite a bit especially knowing that this is Toyota we are talking about. The limited issues this truck is having and the negativity will all go away soon I’m sure… Enjoy your new truck!!

 

I think all of the complaining, even from non owners, has merit.

Unless Toyota has delivered 20k new Tundra so far, the occurrence of problems does seem excessive for a vehicle that is probably still pretty rare. I still haven't seen one yet, and I drive by Rodland Toyota 5 days a week, never seen one in the showroom or front lot.

I have also found the comments dismissing the issues as minor and some people overreacting as funny, because they are frequently followed up by a piling-on of more faulty Tundras coming to light.

Don't get me wrong, I have faith that Toyota will fix it, and we're all mostly victims of pandemic issues as opposed to faulty engineering.

I think everyone is ready for pandemic to be over, and I expect the Tundra to improve significantly and the already delivered trucks to be fixed.

 

What I don’t know is, what is the chance “typically” of a brand new vehicle having to go back to the dealer for some kind of issue within the first few thousand miles? I don’t know. But my dealer has sold 6 and have had a 100% return rate so far. Is that normal?

 

What were the issues? Unfortunately, I've seen and read enough to postpone my tundra purchase until at least 2023.

 

One turbo issue, one heater issue, I think they said all have at least cosmetic issues, mine has a leaking rear diff seal and about 6 cosmetic issues.

Which is exactly what I’m attempting to bring here.... I mean, this IS a thread about the Gen 3 turbo issues correct?(I wonder myself at times), but the spit ball shooters on here, ridiculing every post they see an opportunity....poses a valid question in my mind, “why the hell do I even bother?”

Shifting gears...first tank approx 19 mpg, (fluke?)last 2 “around”, 16.... not impressed. Trust that’ll get better? in warmer temps, truck breaks in...
(Hell I got that out of my 2wd 2019 Tundra..... yes, I’m staying consistent w the top off “clicks” every tank-habit of mine, along w resetting trip meter every tank)

Hey not bad for a 1/2 ton and 19mpg is better than what I’m currently getting!!

Keep posting when you can (don’t get discouraged) as I’ve learned quite a bit just following different threads on here and I try to utilize what I can to stay informed… Love everything about my ‘21 but you won’t find me doing any “spit balling” - asking questions, yes, but never talking bad about someone else’s decision…

 

Im beginning to think the initial tank was “fuzzy math”....the subsequent tanks to follow will expose true mileage.
Thus far, I’m hopeful, but not impressed.

oh....did get a “Check fuel cap” message last night on the way home. Use a locking cap(from Taco I traded in-for the life of me...can’t figure WHY!? these mftrs can’t install a locking door-or cap feature on these trucks!-$ presume), first time Ive seen that one...nothing done differently from the thousands of other tank top offs.
Stopped, deliberately tightened cap several “clicks”... never saw it again.
Go figure.‍♂️

 

Yea the fuel cap thing can get a little sketchy I tried an aftermarket locking one on my ‘18 Tundra and it didn’t like it so I went back to offering my gas for free to anyone to take.

 

If it's a used locking gas cap, it could be the seal on it has conformed to the previous filler. Either the used cap needs more time for the seal to adjust, or just get a new one.

Though not a waste gate issue, I guess I'm one of the "lucky ones" that went straight from test drive to service department, lol.

I do think most of the issues are from defective supply chain. I'd assume once these are identified the issues should die down dramatically. I'm thinking about just getting back on the wait list and getting one built a little later.

Anyone else see the correlation with having so many issues and Toyota announcing they will be using visually defective parts in areas that won't be seen vs the previous ideology of perfection in all parts, or at least trying.

Yes it is. You can never be sure if they’ll go back to the higher standard or stay with the lower one once they see how much money they can save.

You should be able to set it to display "mpg since last fill-up" option without any manual reset.

I have a very short commute working against local driving MPG. Also, its cold and we are on winter fuel blend. Truck settled at 14.5MPG. Noticed last week (Butt Dyno) and feel that the engine was starting breaking in. This weekend, took truck on local ride approx 75 Miles in Eco mode. Temp in upper 40's, speed 35-50MPH mixed driving rolling hills. 19.3 MPG. Very Promising numbers for a 4x4 this size. Even with new machining processes, need to keep in mind the break-in period and affect on MPG. I plan on dropping the oil at 1K - when I find available filter as they are on backorder (Old School and like to get fresh oil into a new engine). In March, the region switches back to summer fuel. Typically see a +2MPG increase just from this change.

You should be close to being broken in.

Strange you can’t find an oil filter. If you have some calipers measure the outside diameter of the OEM filter. Toyota pretty commonly uses a 3” OD canister filter with a 3/4-16 thread pitch for attachment. In which case you could probably fit a longer than stock filter in place since there appears to be room.

Maybe a Mobil 1 M1-209A? Would fit?

 

Bought a couple at a local dealer in NC:

 

Changed the engine & rear differential oil at 1000 miles and started towing after 1000 miles. Getting in the low 20s not towing and a little over 14 MPG towing a 4,900 pound trailer, so far. Believe it will do a little better after full break-in, will see. About 1500 miles so far.
