Fast Wireless Charging - Not enough power?

I have a charging pad that is capable of fast wireless charging. I confirmed it with a plug in charger in my house. It will not do fast wireless charging in my truck though. I tried a couple different 12V chargers. One that says it has 18W which should be enough for the 10W fast charging on my phone. It's an Anker adapter, so not some cheap junk. Has anyone had luck getting something to work? I'm wondering if there just isn't enough power from the cigarette adapter somehow?

 

My math may be way off here, but P=IV results in 840mA no? Isnt the outlet fused at like 10 or 15amps?

EP-L5300XBEGWW. Plugging my phone in isn't the most convenient, but with super fast charging on my Samsung phone I have much more juice in a few minutes than I would in an hour with wireless charging.

 

I was hoping it would work as I hate having to plug in if I don't have to. I usually don't lose too much with regular wireless charging, but I'll be doing the wireless android auto thing soon and I figure that will drain battery more. It's just nice to be able to keep topped off on longer road trips. I can always plug in if I have to.

 

Does the adapter support their fast charge power standard IQ3? Or Quickcharge?

 

It says 18W power delivery so...

 

What is the make and model of both the charger and the adapter?

Neither port fast charges? Some USB-Cs aren't compatible with certain wireless chargers.

 

Yeah neither one will. The charging pad is an Anker as well, and I know it will fast charge at least off of another adapter I have from a power outlet in my house.

 

Understand. That eliminates the pad and the phone from the equation. You can connect directly to the adapter to "prove" it fast charges thus eliminating the adapter as the issue. So either a mismatch between device and adapter or its the cabling.

Despite the product photos here showing the pad connected to a USB-C to USB-C wall charger (the photos definitely show it connected to a USB-C Anker wall charger), it in fact uses a USB-A to microUSB input. The description does not convey this clearly at all. Luckily I was able to dig up an old charger that is able to supply 9v and a microUSB cable. With these charging pad does in fact work as expected. It needs to be made much much clearer in the description that it does not accept USC-C, and the photos need to reflect that.

 

Yeah I tried with the cable that came with the charger pad first. The same cable works with the wall outlet adapter. Then tried the USB-C. Wattage wise, it should provide enough.

 

I don't disagree. From the raw numbers you would expect it to be so and work with no issues. The user in the review is reporting it isn't working that way in that specific configuration.

 

Maybe you have a bad device, or weak cig lighter?
I find the stock wireless charge pad in my dads Tacoma is extremely sensitive to exact placement and phone covers of any thickness, with his latest model iphone anyway.

I also power it from a fast charge rated dual port usb adapter in the cig lighter. Got those usb adapters on both front cig lighters actually.

Full details, I do have a slim semi soft plastic cover on my phone and I have the metal plates on the phone itself inside the cover.
It holds fine for daily driving but falls when offroading, washboard dirt road vibrations etc, or if I drive to fast on the beach lol.

If you mount the metal plates on the outside, it will hold real good, I just prefer a smooth phone front and back.


Works for me because I hate cup holder, suction, or vent mounts, and prefer the phone in line of sight while driving for safety.

 

I tried it on both the cig lighter inside the center console and the one on the lower dash area, same thing. I might just try a different car charger, but I can plug in from the charger via a cable and it will fast charge my phone so it's very odd.

If you are able to get a fast wireless charger going then I don't see how it could be something with the cig lighters, that's odd.

 

I found a couple of those adapters say they are 18watts but it's 18 watts total, leaving each port at 9 watts a piece. I could not find that in the link you provided however but food for thought.

 

The one I have says 30W spilt 18W on the USB-C and 12W on the other.

Its not the adapter then if you can fast charge wired. You can try a different cable make and length but I doubt it is the issue.

It could be a filter in the wireless pad that is interfering with the charge rate. If I'm not mistaken its going from 12V(truck battery) to 5V(adapter) to AC(wireless); probably not a clean 5V going to the pad. It is either getting filtered before getting converted to AC or the inverter doesn't like the unclean 5V. Without a schematic for both it would be hard to tell what is causing this issue.

 

Well...it was somehow the adapter. I got a new adapter and put it in. It's now fast wireless charging with that one. Doesn't make sense but whatever.

Maybe the 12W wasn't quite enough on the USB-A port and the charger pad didn't like the USC-C one. The new one I got is 18W each port with two USB-A. I just moved the other one to the front dash location so I can charge USB-C to USB-C if I need the super fast wired charging.
