Kenwood Head Unit won't turn off when connected to OBD

What do you mean:

Ugh. Typing on my phone.. Edited it: the Viper CAME with two remotes: the main LED (2 way) and a backup (1 way) remote.

 

Ah, ok. Well, guess you gotta go back to the drawing board. 1 key plus 1 viper remote.

 

Sure seems like it, unfortunately. Unless I can figure out a way to get the Toyota key+chip into a Viper remote somehow, that would act as a more compact unit...

That seems like more work than it would be worth though, and I don't have anything fun to possibly do it with, like a 3D printer or anything. I would imagine all it would really take it to modify the current key/fob unit to accept the Viper remote's circuit board and buttons...which would seem like a new faceplate is in order. I'm doubting anyone makes that sort of monstrosity though...at least not yet! :insert mad scientist laugh:

 

Yeah. If u can get the viper remote circuit board into the flip key case. That would be cool.

 

I'm probably over-stepping my abilities, but I can't imagine that with a 3D printer it would be all that difficult. There enough room in the "OEM" fob to fit and mount the Viper circuit board. The faceplate would just need to be replace with one that has a cutout for the buttons, and a way to mount it inside, which I'd guess would just be some sort of post like in most fobs nowadays. I'll need to find someone with a 3D printer that could give me some thoughts on it. That actually would solve things about as good as can be...I'm sure the faceplate would only be a couple/few bucks to make? It would allow those of us with the chipped keys to kind of have the best of both worlds - a more compact key/fob to carry around, but full "normal" remote start capability vs. the doofy Toyota factory setup. I may or may not be starting down the path to justifying a 3D printer purchase...but that feels like using a gold-plated hammer to drive a screw...and I haven't even fixed the head unit problem that I started this thread for in the first place yet!

 

Yeah. List seems to get longer. If you can find someone with a 3D printer that would be cool. Maybe they can rig up something in the software. But for the moment, definitely get your radio sorted out. That way you can put things back and enjoy it.

 

It's all sort of a very slow work in progress right now, for several reasons:

1. I unplugged the OBD connector, so it's not technically an issue any longer
2. ...but the radio is currently just kind of mostly hanging there, along with the controls, as I have the following to do...
3. I need to pull the front seats, get them cleaned, and install the Clazzio covers and seat heaters (the rear is done, but just the covers)
4. I need to reinstall the new microphone and run the wire back to where it was (and not break it)
5. I want to sound deaden the floor when the seats are pulled, but also...
6. I want to sound deaden the ENTIRE floor, the doors and the back wall, but also...
7. I'm planning on throwing an amp in there along with a small sub and need to run all that wiring when the seats are out and the carpet pulled but...
8. I also have to install the USB adaptor so I can use a shorter cable that's not just routed from behind the head unit out through the driver's side.
9. I also need to pull that resistor to see if it corrects the ACTUAL issue why I started this in the first place, but...
10. It's been freaking freezing here for a couple months now, and working on the truck in this weather is brutal.

So...I think I'm going to finish up the things I can easily (new mic, USB adapter, resistor) and put it back together for the time being. It would have been nice to finish up the seats and heaters before it got so stinkin' cold...but there's always next winter, I guess

Long story short - I have SO many things planned, I won't get to actually enjoy the fully finished product/projects until probably late summer

 

That is a long ass laundry list, sir. Lots in the work. Wow. I guess for the time being, gather all your goods. Set a side couple weekends starting in the spring. Work in part.

 

Oh boy, you have no idea. That's not including house projects, which I'm slowly knocking off:

1. Accent wall and fireplace insert in master bedroom
2. Organize the garage - finish insulating and put up drywall
3. Organize the basement
4. Build a pull-out garbage drawer
5. Build a headboard (new bed)
6. Build out upstairs office
7. Build out closet for storage
8. Build in new storage for bathroom

Several of these projects are sort of in limbo from the weather change. Some, like the garage finishing, is left over from previous owners that did half-assed work and left things partially done. There was a major remodel on the house done a couple years ago, and a wall was removed. I've got vacation tomorrow to run a new circuit from the basement to the master on the second floor, since quotes are coming in in the $1,000+ range. If you can't tell, I'm an avid DIYer...this will be a new one for me though. Electrical is simple. Drilling into and through finished walls and ceilings...well, gotta learn somehow!

 

All that makes my head spin. All i can say is best of luck. You most certainly saves a lot by diy if you can.

Been quite a while, but @Crank brought me back to this thread and the initial problem, so I figured I'd update it:

Also, I'll note in the meantime I've completed swapped the suspension, brakes and it's currently at the dealer getting the fuel sending unit, lines and a tank strap replaced due to WI rust issues... meh.

My original list, from just around a year ago:
