I do think that auto spare raise / lower would be a neat product. It does not seem complicated nor expensive. Just a matter of selecting mounting options for specific vehicles off a universal design and a variety of adaptors to fit the plate.

Something else to consider is that if the elevator is motorized, it'll get exercised more often and that will help with rusting/seizing.
    It's a great idea.

yeah, great shop tool. A bit of overkill for on the road but still cool. I’d maybe buy another one if I could find one easy.

Interesting, how does that work for lowering your spare tire then?

    4 piece!

I think the sequoias was tubing with square ends. These are solid.

Shove it in the hole, I mean, I guess instructions could have helped but once you do it a few times you figure it out, right?

Maybe you were asking about the security lock piece? I do have one of those on the Tacoma, however it "fell off" last time DT messed with it. So now both trucks have a slot and the hook fits into the slot.

I might do some sort of aux lock if I get my 285 wheel under the Tundra since that's worth some real $. The Tacoma spare is an alloy but I could survive if it were stolen.

Damn I wish mine was a single piece. Mine 3 or 4 piece version is annoying. They are always falling apart as I use it. Atleast I dont use it very often. Maybe I should weld mine into 1 piece? I always like having a welding project to do so I can get more practice, haha

Thick bike lock through the wheel and around the frame keeps thieves away from mine. Why don’t you think you’ll be able to fit a 285 in the factory location? My 285/75 “fits”. Is it a RC thing?

I'm hopeful. Friends said it's a no go on 3rd gen Taco but you and Dan and others say it'll be good on the Tundra. Hopefully no extra trouble from my rear bumper either, I think that's far enough away. Not sure if I'll have to re-route the exhaust.

I was thinking more about power raise/lower, now I'm wondering if a hinge and strut could potentially be sick, with two points of attachment it might be possible to keep the wheel on top of a tray while it rotates down and out to the side, then lock it in place with a pin/padlock on the frame rail. It'd be fun to see how far I could get trying to prototype something like that.

33 (285 variant) will fit under the bed as long as your exhaust is stock. If your exhaust has been modified you might have clearance trouble like me.

Thanks for explaining. I was worried I would have to mod the exhaust. I may be in luck, I'm scared to death of anything exhaust related, I have nightmares of CHP with their boots on my head grinding my teeth on the asphalt if they caught me with a modified exhaust... :)

I used a thick bike lock for years on my spare. Its from Schlagueueuue (good luck spelling it). Somebody tried cutting it and failed while I lived in LA.

You and @Darkness are welcome to come to IN and go full send on any truck mod you want.
With the difference in cost of housing, you can probably afford to build your truck as full prerunners and still drive those things on the street legally.

If I make a tour it'll be to shovel snow, my hands need gloves when it's under 50 degrees and I can't work on trucks below 45 without whining.

I was once pulled over for driving too fast in a residential, it was early morning and nobody was out except me and a cop.

While he was writing the ticket he mentioned "you know your tint is illegal?"

Oh, is it? I asked them to go mild.

"You know your exhaust is probably exceeding the permitted decibles too?"

Oh, its quiet in the truck, I've never heard it from outside.

"It sounds pretty damn good to me, but probably illegal. We won't mention it."

He also wrote a lower speed on my ticket so I wouldn't catch a reckless. Some cops are really cool guys.

I was literally pulled over on the 5 in Carlsbad and given a ticket for window tint. In the 2002 Tundra, sometime in the 2005-2009 range. No other reason, not speeding, no passengers, not doing anything fun or interesting at all. It was eye opening.

I did find a friend with a husband who was able to sign off on the fixit without forcing me to scrape, back when anyone could sign off on those. The same tint is still on those windows.

I think they've gone softer since then or maybe I just got really unlucky that day.

needs a spring latch so it can rest at TDC. Spares are heavy, and i think the loads of harder bounces would strip the teeth if left at an angle.

Yeah, def lock flat / parallel to frame rails, maybe use bump stops and some wedge latch to compress against the bump stop when locked in place.

Total freaking overkill and extra weight though. But has some potential for a purely mechanical device.

    Just busting yer chops.

Anyways, spare tire rod? Ain't got one for crackie. Not fancy like that, but crackie doesn't have a spare under it anyways.

The V6 is a three?? Piece. Might be four. Pops and I used it when we were in E-town at that damned Hardee's before he had his big rear end blowout. :D

New backburner project. Gonna make a sleeve to tighten the jack bits to a 3/8” drive.

    A2FDA04C-52DE-486B-B9ED-47801B27972F.jpg

about to have to buy a kit of battery powered cordless tools like those kids whos arms hurt when they flex. And if i can power run my jack and spare with a milwaukee or whatever, i’ll be the coolest guy in the parking lot.

    edit:
Walked into tractor supply and home depot. Looked at cordless tool prices, and battery prices and took a big fat nope. Right there in the aisle. At 9am, with like 5 old men telling some poor guy which box they needed a ladder for. All talking over at each other, and i let out a serious ‘what the fuck!?!’. Then wandered down to the angle grinder section and bought the cheapest one in stock. And some good wheels.
