U-Joint suggestions?

Squeaky noise keeps coming and going, almost positive its a U joint. Lots of options on rock auto, anyone have a suggestion for which U joint to get?

 

I've always had good luck with Timken and Spicer

 

Dana/spicer they’re the oem and rockauto sells them

Went ahead and got the Spicer greasable joint, plan on installing it tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback

 

Just did the job, U joint was toast. Weird thing now is the noise from u joint is gone, but new noise is coming from up front. If I put into drive and break quick, I can feel and hear something shift, then if I switch to reverse same thing. If I stay in drive and keep doing it it won’t do it again. Any ideas what it could be?

 

Maybe worn carrier bearing.

 

Kind of a thump or clunk?

Check your transmission mount bolts. 2wd likes to come loose.

 

Could be the carrier bearing. But since you have a 2WD there was also a TSB on the transmission mount which didn't affect 4WD trucks. More info on that (and the TSB for it) here, it only affected '05 and '06 trucks, and only 2WD.

That said, double-check your retention clips on the U-joint caps, overall inspect your works. You don't have any zerks so there's nothing else to grease else I'd tell you to grease the prop shaft slip yoke.

 

Rockauto carries SKF too. I've had good experience with that brand before in the heavy diesel industry. Dana/Spicer still better for the 1st gens?

 

Installed Spicer joints in my shaft when I replaced my shaft support bearing. I no longer have problems with a droopy unsupported shaft.

 

We saw that both buschings for the control arms so we figured it could be that or something else in the front suspensions shifting when going from drive to reverse, maybe now that ujoint isn't totally shot, it is now making parts that weren't moving before move now. Also, a little bit of transmission fluid leaked out while the driveshaft was out, so I was planning on buying a quart to make sure its topped off. Anyone know what exact ATF fuid 05 Tundras take?

05 & 06 went to the sealed 5-speed and WS fluid iirc.

I'm running Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic (red bottle) as its WS rated and also Dex III compatible afaik.

Topped off ATF, thunking noise seemed to go away with temp increase. New noise is a very faint whirring noise on decel. If its the pinion bearing, not worrying about it unless it gets worse. I can barely hear it over the AT's and flowmaster lol.

 

Sealed transmission. There's a specific process to level off the fluid, pouring willy-nilly is probably not the best idea, unless you want to blow a seal or something. Someone posted a great video, start at the 16m23s mark for more info if the video doesn't auto-start in that spot.

Only 1/8th of a quart leaked out while doing the u joint, so I just wanted to make sure it was topped off. Used a pump and once a steady stream was pouring out of the level check hole closed everything up. I’m not even sure there is a way too pour Willy nilly since there isn’t any dip stick tube

 

There's no way to pour willy nilly necessarily. But OEM procedure is to heat the fluid up, then open the overflow to drain off excess. Not sure how much difference it'd make though having the fluid hot versus cold. I can't brain right now so the thought of trying to understand whether the fluid would be larger or smaller when heated is melting the wrinkles out of my gray matter.

 

Hey, since there's some transmission fluid talk in here, just a warning that early (2000 - ?) Tundra Owner's Manunals had misprinted the transmission fluid drain/fill capacity at only 2 qts. It is actually 4 qts/ 1 gallon, and the 2000 - 2002 fluid was originally Dex III, now serviced by "Dex/Merc". My 2000 manual had the misprint. I ran Castrol Transmax Dex/Merc in my 2000 Tundra, did 2 drain/refills and it shifted perfect, took exactly 1 gallon so it was a very easy service, didn't bother dropping the pan, just cracked the drain plug.

I bet that misprint is responsible for same of the failures of the early trans, but mine with 245k on it was stout despite previous owners doing poor maintenance and I enjoyed revving that 2UZ out pretty often
