Seems appropriate with all the “you kids get off my lawn” mentality. I don’t care about Boomer arguments. I don’t care if someone feels left at the altar because Toyota discontinued the V8. I thought this thread was about the turbo issues?

Is this your first internet forum? I haven't seen a thread yet that doesn't go off the rails at some point.

I cant swear to it without digging. It was over a week ago I saw it on the forum, but I didn't pay a ton of attention to where I saw it. Hazard of not being in the market for a truck.

Random thought: there's gotta be a way to create an 8 cylinder engine that gets > 20 mpg. At this point though I guess that's moot since the industry will be forced off fossil fuels in a few short decades.

For what it's worth, I posted on Toyota's USA Facebook page a few nights ago. I was diplomatic and simply inquired about the turbo issue, what is being done to fix it, and a Vin# range of affected parts (if available). At that time, I had not yet pulled my deposit (but finally did 2 days ago on a 1794 inbound) and was simply asking Toyota to respond about a known, well-documented issue across many online platforms. I also mentioned 2 documented cases of engines shutting off while on the interstate at 65-ish mph. Remarkably, Toyota deleted my post within minutes....like less than 5 minutes later. I tried to repost again by simply asking about the waste gate issue and a bad batch of parts. That was deleted even sooner than the first. What is Toyota hiding? This was an opportunity for Toyota to address and clarify (if possible) questions that many of us are asking. If you look at other posts on the page, Toyota was quick to respond and provide assistance. However, both of my posts were ignored and deleted. I even utilized the "IM" function to attempt a private conversation with Toyota and my question was once again ignored even though I could see that it was viewed. Hmmmmmmmm.......Make assumptions where you must but where I come from, that's called bullshi* and shady as heck.

I had a 2021 Ram ETorque Big Horn last year for work, and put over 10K miles on it since brand new. It consistently averaged about 20mpg combined.

Was extremely impressed with the truck overall. Bummed my next contract truck is an F250 with the gas 6.2 .

What axle ratio was in the RAM? Had a RAM Rebel as a rental for about a week and couldn’t break 13 mpg on all highway driving (75 mph cruising in the midwest summer). It had the 3.92 axle ratio.

3.21 I believe is the basic option? I don’t believe it was the 3.92.

Also don’t doubt at all that the Rebel gets that mileage. No trucks do well at 75mph. Especially the Rebel as it is is taller, less aero, heavier, and bigger tires. Doubt it ever drops to 4cyl mode at that speed.

Unless there is a lot more to it, That’s kind of discouraging. Definitely would appear as of mid January they either had not id’d the faulty parts or had, but were basically waiting for them to show issues before taking action.

That's easy and they do that already. Just have to put it in something Light and aero like a Corvette. C7 Vettes with the non-supercharged 6.2L V8 get upper 20s on the highway, even with the DoD off. But no way that's ever gonna happen pushing a 6000# brick like the Tundra. Simple physics and thermo-damnamics.

Hey, I'd love to have a 600 HP V8 in a Tundra and get 25 mpg. But as an engineer I live firmly in the real world and get tired of hearing this theme that "they" can do that or "they" are holding back some magic alien technology.... or, etc, etc. Good lord, it is 2022 for god's sake.

And meanwhile over on TacomaForum someone is posting about another old scam... the device that "aligns the fuel molecules". My comment there was that a sucker is born every minute and the clock keeps on ticking making many more customers, I suppose.

The '71 had SU carbs on it and they were okay. the "73 had the Strombergs and they were awful. The advent of Fuel injection in late '74 into '75 and thereafter was a fantastic addition for the car, made all of the difference.

The rebel gets worse MPG's than a regular ram even though they are rated the same. For whatever reason, the EPA doesnt require that the Rebel be rated separately despite the lift, Load Range E Duratracs, air dam delete, etc. Those tires are only a shade lighter than the LT315/70R17 KO2's I have on my F150.

But also, 75mph is fast. What would you expect at that speed? I might expect 16-17 at best. Thats what my F150 would do with P-metric 275/60R20 Duratracs, factory air dam, and no lift. Driving at 65mph, my same truck would get 21-22.

I have also had a Rebel rental as well as multiple non-rebel Bighorns. The Bighorns never had issues getting 20's on the freeway around houston for me.

I was just curious. I know the spread on the RAM’s gear ratio options is fairly big.

Seems to me they don't want this getting out to potential buyers. If the affected trucks are small enough and they can remedy the situation at the factory, this issue will eventually go away. However, if we continue to have turbo issues or if it start failing at higher mileages like 5/10k, shit will hit the fan and heads will certainly roll.

Yes, its called cylinder deactivation. Dropping a 6.0L down to 3L or less when light load is needed. GM and Ram have been doing this for like 8 years now. But if you think Turbo'd V6's are hunks of unreliable crap then I have bad news for you. The displacement on demand V8's are just about as bad. Ram and GM both have issues with the valve trains not lasting. Ford just jumped into the displacement on demand thing this year with the 5.0 so no word on how that is doing.

If I'm not mistaken, they were 'sorta' doing it on the 5.0Ls previously; they just did it differently than some others (e.g., not delivering fuel to those cylinders vs. not firing them, or something).

IDK about that. I had not heard that but possibly.

They didnt truly start using cylinder deactivation where they actually shut off the valves until this year though.

    I enjoyed mid 20s with a 6.2L...but in a car.

My previous ram got 20 (rcsb, 6sp, hemi).

We get mid 20’s with our LS3 powered Chevrolet SS, but it weights a bit under 4,000lbs and is fairly aerodynamic.

interesting thought. I wonder if about 20 of us started posting the same query on the Toyota USA Facebook page. does not seem to be a lack of interest in this question.

In terms of decreasing engine durability cylinder deactivation is well proven concept going back to Cadillacs in the early 80’s. Tons of those still on the road….

Definitely can produce improved highway mpg. Definitely also produces cooked pistons, fouled valves, frozen lifters and other issues that will require a engine rebuild.

Let’s also not forget Honda recently got on the wagon with similar results. Introduced active engine mounts….

Displacement on demand aka cylinder deactivation aka active fuel management is a dumb gimmick that can produce small savings in MPG‘s at the expense of significantly increased uneven engine wear costing many multiples of the dollars of fuel saved.

Toyota made a much better decision going with turbos. Just need them to perform to Spec.

Awesome advice! If my '07 Tundra was 4WD, I'd seriously consider doing just that. Wouldn't mind finding a used one but I would have to find exactly what I wanted and not settle for something close. They're not easy to find. Anyway, if my wife (a CPA) read your comment, her response would be "What he said!" ;)
