So I have installed hids in my low beams, 6 k , I have had them in for around 3+ months with no problems.. Knock. So I install hids in my fogs and just noticed the other morning they were not working. I trouble shooted what I could. No moisture or signs of water, switched them around. My fog fuse was blown, so I replaced it and still nothing. I read where I need resistors for each side. Can someone shed some light on this. I didn't see anything helpful in our forum. Thanks

Well i've got the cheaper DDM hids in my low beams and bought the hids for the Fogs from Hid Extra, supposedly a well known company.

Ok a quick search of there site on pics of ballast told me everything. Those are NOT water proof at all, no matter what they say.

    Lets try this...
    Unplug both ballasts.
replace the fuse ( if not done)
turn on your fog lights. ( wires should have power Confirm with a volt meter for 12v) going to the ballast
That checks out we have ballast problem or ballast failure, If you Dont have power your RELAY is out Or the fuse at the battery to the relay is out.

Edit fogs dont use the canbus system only headlights, im aware of.

Ok Mike, I will do that tomorrow, I located the fuse in the engine compartment, but is there another fuse in the cab, I didn't see one in the sketch for fuse layout for the cab.

Check all fuses but we need to find out why it blew. Im willing to bet you have a bad ballast or ballast pulling to much amps on start up.

Let me know see what i can do to help.

Ok Mike, ended up being a bad ballast. The guy at hid extra said that a bunch of guys are jumping up to a 20 amp fuse from 15, said 5 amps wouldn't make a difference. I'm skeptical about this. Also have a relay that will run straight from battery, but it's not long enough to reach ballast. What's your thoughts on fuse jump

Ballast are power hungry on start up and very hungry when below freezing temps. It takes between 50,000 volts to 150,000 volts to fire (make the arc in the bulb) so the ballast can power the gases plus vaporize the salts. on start up to trade amps(cold) for voltage (when warm). Most ballast need 10 amps EACH to fire up. In the case of two ballast you need to up the amps to 20 amps on start up ( 2 ballasts X 10 amps = 20 amps) . This is where you should be fused at 20 amps. Now when the ballast is running normal you are drawing around 3 to 4 amps tops per ballast.. (all your doing is keeping the arc STABLE at that point).

The correct way for HIDS is,from battery to fuse ( 20 amps or 25 depends on ballasts ) to relay to ballast. This ORDER ONLY. If your wiring is not long enough extend the wiring as needed, extend only the power end, ONLY going to the battery. DONT CUT ANY OF THE PREMADE WIRING GOING TO THE BALLAST FROM THE RELAY. Also make sure your relay has a nice solid ground (earth) to the chassis. That can cause problems also. Also make sure your ballasts are grounded GOOD.

Any problems let me know im here.
