Clean Looking 05 4WD Limited but are they asking too much?

Looking at this real clean 05 limited 4WD. But the price is super off putting, was hoping I could get something similar for around 16 but wanted to get your guys input. Got them down to 18 but that still feels a little ridiculous for a 17 year old truck. I’m a big fan of this one but feels like I’d overpay big time for it. Anyway any input is much appreciated.

 

Mileage is good and if it's clean - it's still a shit ton to pay. I don't think anyone here will get too excited about that price. But the market sucks, so...

Nice truck but a bit too much for a 17 year old vehicle. Plus it is going into decent Gen 2 tundra's price point . Let's hope market will calm down this year

 

I would say don't listen to the 2014 owner who probably paid 2x that for their truck. The reality is, the 1st gen trucks are at least twice as good and half as much $$ as what they have, from options to reliability, to curb appeal. Not to mention, it's extremely well-optioned with 4WD and all the frills. I don't expect this truck to remain for sale at that price for more than 3-5 days.

Be aware: West coast prices are notoriously inflated, and the closer you get to the PNW, the higher that goes. at 100K-ish miles, given you being in CA, given how highly optioned the truck is an how good it looks, if the price shown was the OTD (out the door) price, covering tax tag and title, I'd do it. Honestly.

My truck was only about 10% less than yours, at least 4 years ago, before the 1st gens with under 120k miles became a hot commodity (my truck had around 65k miles at purchase). Mine was also a Limited, with many of the options, but I paid over $500 to retrofit with OEM wood grain, and I'm seeing tires and newer OEM wheels that would make up the difference in cost.

BUT I'LL ADD ONE THING. I'd only pay that price ***IF*** the seller has proof the timing belt and water pump were changed within the last 20k miles ***AND*** there's no evidence of rust on the frame and it's not all glossy-black like it's just been painted to cover something. It's the only reason I was comfortable with the price the stealership I bought mine from had theirs listed for, though I talked them significantly down, and it didn't look nearly as nice as yours, but had literally everything I wanted.

 

(PS: All later-gen owners cannot be trusted to provide good purchase advice. They clearly don't know which generation of truck is the best.)

 

I'd like to do this but damn that's a lot of money. Isn't it just the radio/climate control bezel and the window switches?

The more details part that you probably won't find in that thread is how particular the HVAC controls are to your truck. It seems a lot of people have found you can't just go to, for example, a 2005 donor truck, snatch out the HVAC controls, and expect it to work in your '01. Like, you can't even expect another '01 truck to match your '01. Thing is, I've never seen anyone be able to say whey they're different, but seems like the majority of people who randomly tried this failed. Either some buttons didn't work, radio didn't get power (it must route through HVAC control board on some models?) or whatever.

But at the same time, read my reply, the 2nd one in that thread, because it's a f'n bitch to do the center console specifically. I DO NOT and WILL NOT go through it again. If you choose to swap things over the way I did, set aside an hour just to do the center console, and work very slowly, carefully, and just walk away if you lose your temper. There's lots of plastic bits you can break.

 

Yeah I do recall reading about people having issues between years and such. I'll never spend $500 on it all but just something I'd like to do if I ever came across a good deal.
My FIL's 00 AC has woodgrain that he couldn't care less about. Probably not worth the hassle of trying to trade it though.

 

Make sure you get under it and check for rust. Upper control arm in pic 10 looks a little rusty and are those the TRD dual exhausts? They look a little crusty to.

Personally, I would wait for another truck. Not only did I notice that whoever install those budget Dunlop Grandteks did not reset the TPMS, but in addition to the air bag warning light, there is no sticker on the intake manifold showing that the timing belt and water pump were changed at 90K miles. For $18,000 - I want to a truck that was meticulously maintained with better quality parts.

Look up the price of replacing the timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt, plus new tensioners and rollers. Then add it to the purchase price. I'd want those Dunlop Grandteks gone as well.

Last but not least, this photo shows a good bit of rust on the upper control arm. Is it from a wet climate?

 

Could just be a bad photo, but the frame looks pretty chunky too in the pic you highlighted.

 

Dang, that looks like a lot of rust on that upper control arm for a California truck, even if it was parked on the PCH along the coast it's whole life. Wouldn't be surprised if it was bought via auction or something from the rust belt and hauled out here.

This truck also has an electronic LSD which is inferior to the stock mechanical LSD.

I'd be really surprised if that truck lived in FL its whole life. Trucks from here usually won't have that level of rust. You don't start seeing stuff like that 'til you land up in some parts of NC, TN, and VA. CarFax will tell you where a truck has been registered (at least) and may shed some light. I'm going to see if I can pull a report on the VIN real quick.

Seem rather buggered up to me. If you can see faults in pictures it will look 10x worse in person. I wouldn't drive more than 30 minutes to look at it.

 

I would pass on it. With the rust and the CA prices for a not-CA truck, this is not a truck I would be interested in.

A solid CA truck, double cab, limited 4x4, with low miles, would fetch 18k here commonly. The question isn't "is it too much", rather "doesn't that seem like too much?" With the current market a lot of our pricing ideas and references are useless. Its a sellers market and there isn't a lot you can do to haggle down because somebody else will buy at this price without noticing the bad news(that they bought a rusty truck at CA rates).

Move on, and be careful to watch for rust. That is the one true weakness for these trucks and there isn't a reasonable way to correct it if it went too far.

 

Add is full of lies. Truck is decent. Too many monies, but if the market will pay it.

"No dings visible on this truck" Really? the hell is that giant dent??? And the damage to the fender flare in front of it? This is not the holy grail Tundra. It's just a used truck. And it's overpriced. No good pics of the undercarriage, but those semi flattened exhaust tips and the one visible UCA appear rusty.

 

So true! I get comments about how mint my truck looks. And while it is in really good shape it has a bruise or two here and there. So yeah, the pics are as good as it will ever look so be a bit cautious with that.

And I agree you shouldn't see anything rusted up if it were as clean as stated...

Sounds like you've got some issues bro. But as long as you've got a Tundra too, I still love you. Platonically, of course.

 

I think this is a hard pass. Too many potential issues that others have pointed out. Also remember these are great trucks, but they are trucks, and at 17 years old things do break so you will be putting at least a couple thousand into the truck in the next few years. If nothing ever broke on these trucks this forum would only have posts about tire sizes and lift kits, but there are lots of people doing lots of repairs as you can see.

Hold out for a better deal. Maybe you can PM this guy in UT who posted a nice looking 2006. He might let it go for $10k...

Woah. Local San Clemente guy here - I wouldn't do it. That dealership is pretty sketchy from word of mouth reputation. One thought, get a buddy to go in and try lowballing it for you - when its not your purchase it feels less scary to offer like 13k. They'll say no, but maybe they'll be more open to a 14-15k offer from you a few days later.

 

By way of comparison, a year ago last November I bought a garage kept 2006 DC 2WD SR5 w/ 59K miles here in So Cal.
It just had new timing belt, water pump, trans drain/fill, and brakes all done at a local stealership.
He had just put on a new Snug Top 'Super Sport' top w/ all the bells whistles, keyless entry etc.. new Yokahama tires, and KYB gas-adjust shocks.
Had a new pioneer head unit, w/ speakers, and a back-up camera locally installed as well.
Full Weather-tech floor mats, & a few other small items.
He was asking $17K & I got it for $15K . . . granted it's NOT a 4WD.

IMO I'd rather buy a clean higher mileage model with good maintenance records/ history etc. than a low mileage version with a questionable background. If nothing else, you will sleep better.

Appreciate the input fellas, most likely not gonna get it. I was looking up the Toyota service records and looks like it needs the regular 90k services. As well as a catalytic converter situation I found on the records. Also dealership is lying a good bit and is being suspect about sending pictures of frame/underside. Y'all were a big help here and I really appreciate your guys opinions. I'll probably make another post or two like this getting input on the next one I find and am close to getting lmao.

 

Im over in the Bay Area too so wasn't able to go down there and check it out very easily to get a firsthand look.

 

Yeah they were super suspect when I was texting them and talking to em on the phone. Not a bad idea though getting a friend involved I might use that in the future haha
