When to replace TRD-Pro Bilstein

    I have a 2016 with 57K miles. I'm the original owner.

    I don't offroad but it is always on the 'to-do' list.

    That being said - what do you look for when determining it is time to replace the shocks? I'm all pavement all the time but I'm curious what is typical for a primarily street vehicle that only goes offroad to get from point A to B and not to crawl or baja style?

    Baring something catastrophic like oil leaking from the housing or the truck bouncing wildly on the road. You sort of just feel it. 100k on a set of shocks is a great lifespan but people seem to put the avg lifespan of the Bilstein shocks on the pro at 60-80k. I have 105k on my Bilstein set and it's acceptable but I have a set of fox ready to go.

    I concur. I'm at 80,000 miles and have two boxes of bright, shiny new boingy-boingy things just waiting to go on.

    Eibach Pro Truck Stage 2 suspension, HD RAS, 285/75-18 Nokian Outpost AT, LoPro bed cover, TRD rear sway bar, DD 10 inch exhaust, and various other goodies
    Barring any leaking: The black entry level shocks start loosing effectiveness around 50k miles. The sport and OR shock are better and last longer. Ive got 55k miles on my OR package suspension, still pretty firm but not quite as good as they were, I will replace them sooner but would expect 70-80k miles out of them before they lost too much dampening ability. I would expect the same for the top tier TRD Pro shocks.

    Thanks guys. I guestimated 75 - 80 which was probably based off of something read here or tt years ago. In past lives I've replaced shocks and instantly thought "holy hell I should have done this 15K ago" and I've also experienced "holy hell these now feel like driving a coin operated bed over mountain scree".

    Based on my current run rate it sounds like i've got at least a couple of years to go barring something unforseen.

    I have a question for TRD shock guys. I know the fox shocks in the newer trucks level out the front end at 2.5”. Will the older bilstien shocks do the same thing?

    I have a set lined up for 900 bucks with under 1,000 miles. Is that a good price?

    Will they level the front of my truck like the fox shocks will?

    So if I’m understanding this the fox shocks from a newer pro will raise it a little more?

    Is 900 high for the older setup?

    If I recall correctly, I paid $850 for my Bilstein TRD Pro shocks with 30K miles on them a few years ago.

    I think that's a good price if they are unused shocks and whatnot. I paid $2300 for the Pro foxes with 1k miles. I wanted the foxes even though I like bilstein better because I can send the Fox shocks back to them for a "cheap" rebuild whenever I want, whereas Bilstein must be replaced entirely. Planning to put 250K on this vehicle at least so I wanted to be able to rebuild rather than throw out parts.

    I got the info wrong, 975 and they are roughly 8ish hours away.

    Also looking at a shim to bring them up half or another full inch?

    So in the end what’s really worth it at that price? Are the fox’s a better choice

    I've got almost 90,000 miles on my 2016 pro with the bilstiens and don't feel any loss of performance. Mainly on road use with some rough country roads.

    If they truly have 1,000 miles on them I'd say it's worth the $975 in my opinion, but being 8 hours away would be a deal breaker at least for me. You can add the Coachbuilder shims to gain an additional inch of height (+3" total) if that's what you're trying to accomplish or utilize the Westcott kit. I did that with my Bilstein Pro shocks.

    As for which are better Bilstein or Fox I can't say. I only have experience with the Bilstein version. I would bet that you won't be able to find the Fox version near that price unless you are very lucky - not sure what they go for, but likely double that at least.
